OK, so Hurley spent some time in a mental hospital. Sawyer reading "A Wrinkle in Time"; yet another book about a power-mad being controlling the actions of the people around him (IT of CENTRAL Central Intelligence). Hurley owned stock in the box company where Locke worked. The numbers came from a far-off transmission in French. Curiouser and curiouser. And he also owned a sneaker factory that burned down. I wonder if there is any connection between his holdings and Sun's father's factory.

It was heartening to see that Hurley was as neat a person before the island as we have seen him to be on the island.
And I loved the humor in this episode - the guy falling out the window behind them when Hurley was discussing his holdings with the financial rep was macabre humor at it's best! I cracked up...and when he told the guy to get off the ladder! LOLOL!!
maybe I'm just sick.

Dude! So, in one possible kinda warped way . . . Hurley could be thought of as . . . well, not the mastermind of it all, but the puppet/victim/hand of the mastermind??
The evil numbers?
Woah!

Hmmmm.

Yup. And I'm sure you noticed that his lottery numbers were exactly the same as those written on the piece of paper he was holding. Moreover, the second and third numbers were 8 and 15--815 was both the castaway's flight number and the number of the safety deposit box Kate was so eager to get her hands on. I totally forgot about the flight number/safety deposit box number connection!

Lots of stuff about communication in the ep - wordless communication and communication problems . . .
I was struck by that last scene. Charlie wasn't listening at all - he cut Hurley off when Hurley was trying to tell him his story, and made it all about himself. Then when Hurley tried to tell him more, he wouldn't believe it.
I was hoping to see some hot Sayid lovin' in this ep, but we only got more teasing.
I thought, despite the . . . strong suggestion that Hurley was, in fact, jinxed by the numbers . . . there was a strong suggestion that "believing it" is what made it so.
All that mention of boxes - the box company, Leonard telling Hurley he had "opened the box," followed by Claire talking about traps . . . and traps in the woods . . . geez. I dunno what to think.
But I think this was the funnest backstory we've seen yet.

Woah! you know, we've SAID that Hurley might be the key to it all... yeah, I know we've said everything might be...

You know, when Charlie was telling him about the heroin, I thought - see Hurley? good has come out of this for a lot of people - Charlie is clean and found Claire, Locke can walk, many good things are happening because of the plane crash - but then they didn't go that way. And I must say I probably wouldn't believe that Hurley had 163 million or whatever either...

Oh, yeow! I noticed Danielle's numbers were similar, but not the other. Wow. So, he thinks he's cursed. No wonder he's going after Danielle. The scene where they finally meet and she agrees with him that they could be considered a curse? Wow! I mean, the actor hasn't gotten that many opportunities to really show off all his acting chops yet, his character being the calm, mellow guy most of the time. But that scene just really got to me. So grateful that someone finally doesn't just brush it off or think he's nuts. And then at the end, he tells Charley a truth and he doesn't believe him. Tsk, tsk, Charley! People just don't want to see someone step outside the box they've filed them away in. Yet everyone on the island has, in some way, not been what they seem to be at first, why would it be so hard for Charley to think that Hurley was too? Lola

Lola cause that kind of money is real hard to imagine anyone having... I too was impressed with his acting.

"I'm spry." What do the numbers mean? Loved "I'm spry"!! And he is! People keep not believing him, but he keeps being right.

But we also got the suggestion a few weeks ago, that Walt was somehow the one making everything happen with the power of his mind . . . So . . . when I add it all up . . . I get uh . . . what were those numbers anyhow? I tried to write them down, but I don't think I got all of them. I think I am missing one. I did not tape it. I have: 4 8 15 16 23 42

Ok, no French accent but there's why Hurley went to Australia. Ok, is it coincidence that we get 'Short Round' and now a rickety wooden bridge in the same episode? Hmmm? Coincidence? Ha! There's no coincidences on the island! ;D ;D

Does anyone remember which episode Hurley and Walt played backgammon? I want to figure out what Hurley said about winning... I have a feeling he played it in the mental hospital. I don't remember which episode, but he isn't very good at it. Doesn't he owe Walt something like $86,000? Last week Walt said he was lucky at Backgammon. Have you ever played? It does take more luck than skill. Lots of references to "luck" in this episode. The Australian lady said "You make your own luck." Hurley's mom is Catholic and doesn't believe in curses. Charlie mentioned how he didn't believe that it was Hurley's fault that the plane crashed. And Locke said it was good luck for a baby to be born close to the mother's birthday.
