thank you, sara! she did look very familiar, but i only got as far as IMBD to try to figure it out (they didn't have the full cast up yet, and i got distracted by another shiny object). castiel looks familiar, too, but i haven't figured out why yet. to me, it looked more like the gas station was closed than completely abandoned, though that also doesn't explain why it had the day's newspaper, since it was still daytime out. to liz - hah, yeah. though it would've been potentially interesting to see him deal with hell for a little bit before breaking out.... did you guys read the recent interview with kripke?

Yeah, since Dean had actually been sent to hell, I was expecting him to spend a couple of episodes there at least. Actually in the beginning of the ep, up until Dean meets up with Bobby and it's clear that it's really Bobby, I was thinking that Dean really was still in Hell. Once in hell, I certainly wasn't expecting a deus-ex-machina that would get him out, lol. I haven't read the recent interview with Kripke. Linky?

he's from the toledo, ohio area and it's a combination of an interview with the local paper and an article about him being from the midwest: toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080817/ART18/39142725if you consider how many seasons the showrunner is planning to do to be spoilery, don't read it, though, as he mentions that.

Neat. I had no idea about all the Toledo references, not being from there. And I love that he has planned out how many seasons he wants to do, because once a show's got legs, that's always my concern.

i'm really enjoying this season. i like how they're letting different characters tell different perspectives on the whole new plot development, and i thought it was interesting that dean was so, well, cheeky (angry, etc.) to castiel. i understand both their perspectives; on the one hand, dean has a lot of issues and feelings to work through about everything, and on the other hand, castiel did (apparently) save dean from hell.
i thought what ghost!meg said to sam about ruby was interesting, too. i wonder what sam thought of it; maybe he'll process it more next episode.
i also thought it was interesting that castiel called what lilith did her "sense of humor."
what did the rest of you think of this episode?

I like ghosts-came-back-from-the-dead-to-force-you-to-confront-your-past storylines. It's especially interesting, because, like Buffy, Sam and Dean go from crisis to crisis, and when the would be victims are either saved or dead, they usually put them out of their mind unless the boys have a personal relationship with them. I liked how Castiel pointed out that since he pulled Dean out of hell, he could put Dean back. Essentially, God bought Dean's soul from Lilith and owns it now, which is really interesting.

wow, what a way to show us backstory: by literally bringing dean into it. i thought it was so interesting that it was really the campbells who were the hunters, and john winchester was the unjaded, idealistic optimist.
and now dean might be finally about to find out about sam's little ruby trysts.
what did you all think?

I love this episode. I love origin stories and this is how it all really happened stories and also seeing your parents for who they really were stories.
The Yellow Eyed Demon makes bargains and comes to collect in 10 years. Didn't the crossroads demon also do that?
Mary died on November 2nd? As in All Saints Day/The Day of the Dead? Did we know that before? The date is rather apropos.
Also, now I want to watch the whole show over from the beginning, with this new information in mind.

Copying what I posted in the main thread:
I have to agree that the casting of YoungJohn and YoungMary were great. I do think that Castiel is who he says he is, mostly because he seems to be projecting a sort of angelic demeanor and I haven't seen any inconsistencies in his behavior or any hint of maliciousness from him so far. And I think he brought Dean back in time or whatever instead of Sam because he can't change history (or "destiny" as he says). The goal was to provide Dean with the information he needed to know; He can't change what happen to Sam and since Sam is slipping away Castiel may not be able to even reach him and having Sam see what Dean saw probably wouldn't have made any difference.

I wasn't thinking about this until I read the twop recaplet, but the Yellow Eyed Demon was in Mary's dad's body when she kissed him to seal the deal.
Ewwwwwwww...

Oh, and I finally realized why the demon waitress Dean and Sam chatted with seemed familiar: the actress (Jen Halley) also plays Seelix on BSG. Just in case anyone else was having a "where in the H-E-double hockey sticks have I seen her before" moment. Ha! Thanks, Sara.

The Yellow Eyed Demon makes bargains and comes to collect in 10 years. Didn't the crossroads demon also do that? yes, oftentimes. i got the sense in this episode that sometimes the demons picked their own time frames. if we did know it already, i forgot. ;D me too!
