So Maryann started out as a mortal... Interesting! And they made Sookie's cousin into a vampire? I wonder what that will do with the storyline where she meets her nephew. Was she a vampire, or a snack? Loved the finale. Sam and Bill working together - very cool. So many things happened in the last 10 minutes to set up next year. Looks awesome! Guessing that Erik kidnapped Bill. Given her clothing and appearance I'd say vampire. Could be wrong. Apparently they are moving some plot points from the later novels up to keep things moving along. In an interview, the director/creater/whatchamacallit said it was Hoyt's mom. Somehow, I can see that too with her being all pissed about Hoyt standing up to her and distancing himself thanks to Jessica, the vampire he created. I'm kind of pissed we have to wait nine months to find out.

Or someone entirely new. Nine months.

"I love the smell of nail polish in the morning!" and "If a tree falls in the woods, it's still a tree." HA!!

I just finished 1st season. I was VERY disappointed that the killer turned out to be Rene. I really really liked him. Now I'm going to miss his cutie patootie self and that sexy accent, fake or not. Other than that, I'm liking the show so far. Not loving it, and if I didn't continue watching it I probably wouldn't miss it, but I'll probably still try to catch up on season 2. One thing I don't love is that Sookie and Bill get on my nerves quite often. And I LOATHE Jason. Such a freaking moron. Sam is probably my favorite character, so far. Followed by Lafayette.

Love Lafayette! He gets into some serious sh*t in second season, but he's pretty resilient. I'm just catching up with Season 2. Think I'm going to order me some DVDs.
After Spike--Eric!!! Although I don't think Eric would see it that way. Arrogant bastard.
(Beatuiful, but arrogant)

I've been having some thinky thoughts about Eric and his obsession with Sookie and I think I've hit on something nobody else seems to have observed.
Why is Eric so drawn to Sookie? Why--specifically--is he so fascinated by her in an ever-increasing way?
In the first season he seemed to be just a one-note villain. His attitude suggested that he thought she was pretty, innocent and might make an evening's fun/meal. Then he learned of her "talent" and his interest grew. Not just a plaything then, but a tool! A VERY useful tool.
We all know Eric is capable of doing extremely evil things and that he is also someone who can be persuaded to do good if provided with sufficient motivation. There has to be something in it for him, even if it's only a few hours' relief of boredom. In this, he reminds me of Season 2 Spike and also of Templeton the Rat from the book Charlotte's Web and of the Ferengi of Star Trek. Not truly evil and not truly good, he's totally self-involved and profit-seeking (whether the profit is blood, money or Sookie).
In the second season we learn that Eric has another side. We see how deeply he cares for Godric. We see the depth of his worry when Godric is missing, the risks he's willing to take to get him back and the agony of his grief for Godric's loss. But I think we also see someting else. I think we see how much Eric NEEDS someone to care for. Up till this moment his fascination for Sookie has been because 1. She's a telepath and that means she could be the source of PROFIT. 2. He's sexually attracted to her. 3. He loves jerking Bill's chain.
However, when Godric makes his suicide plans clear and commands Eric to leave him, Sookie offers to stand in Eric's place so Godric won't die alone. Godric dies comforted by Sookie's words, tears and the fact of her willing presence. He also asks her to look after Eric, leaving her with severely mixed feelings and veins contaminated by Eric's blood. In a way, Godric has bequeathed Eric to Sookie. Now Sookie will be a long time reconciling this, but Eric--who can now feel both her attraction and her repulsion has no problem at all. Eric continues to state that he protects Sookie because her life is "valuable". But he's telling a half-truth. Bill is now at least temporarily out of the picture (Reason #3). Moreover, Eric is no longer profiting from Sookie's talent (Reason #1). That means she is "valuable" to him for quite another reason.
I don't believe Eric now protects Sookie just because of his sexual attraction to her (Reason #2). He has Fangtasia--a bar full of beautiful young women (and men!) who would give everything they have for five minutes of his attention. Sexually starved he is NOT, and moreover, his attitude toward sex is radically different from that of a human--or from the Victorian-minded Bill Compton. His encounter with Yetta in Fangtasia (interrupted by Sookie) underscores just how different that attitude is. While he would take Sookie to bed in a (non) heartbeat, he has no objection to her witnessing him with another woman or with returning to that woman once Sookie leaves the room.
Realistically, why should he? Eric has sex. He does not make love. Moreover, whatever his feelings he's not unfaithful. Neither Eric nor Sookie have ever made any promises to each other; and anyway, for the time being Sookie, at least in her own mind, still belongs to Bill (absent or not) rendering her off-limits.
So WHY is Eric so fixated upon Sookie? Well, he does respect her courage. She has smarted off to him in ways that would get another human killed. She's even slapped him. She refuses to be intimidated by him, even when he uses his tremendous height and musculature to tower over her with fangs bared. He can't frighten her and he can't glamour her. She looks him straight in the eye and sometimes even stares him down. So, the simple answer is that, in addition to being attracted, he actually likes her.
The Not-So-Simple reason is that, as much as he would kill anyone who found out about it, Eric NEEDS someone to care about--and someone who cares about him--and the only person who ever filled that role has chosen to die rather than stay with him. Godric offered to be his "Father, Brother, Son" forever. But Godric has gone where Eric cannot follow.
Eric is truly alone for the first time in nearly 1100 years. He doesn't know what to do.
But there's Sookie. Human Sookie who has no fear, who doesn't care about Eric's beauty or money or power. Sookie who will challenge him on every move, and who is so much smarter than she is ever given credit for. Sookie who has heard him say that he doesn't understand love and who knows it for the bullshit it is.
In some hidden place in Eric's heart, I think he hopes that Sookie will someday replace Godric as an eternal companion.
Feel free to rip the theory apart.

Excellent ep!
Loved Lafayette getting Tara out of the house and talking sense to her and then the shocking reveal of his mom, (Alfre Woodard OMG!), not to mention sex-ay Jesus. Mmmmm. Loved the vamp versus wolf fighting. Loved tough Sookie with the gun and being ready to fight the werewolves. Loved how they're making it all complex and twisty as Sam finds his birth family. Loved the Andy and Jason show, which is alternately funny as hell and then truly tragic. Loved Tara kicking ass. Loved the background story we got from Eric (including bonus Godric sighting). Loved the whole wacky King of Mississippi household/court, with the endless parade of blood courses. Loved the increasingly panic-stricken Jessica, chatting with Pam about corpse-removal and renting chainsaws.
And then the end! Bill throwing the lamp at Lorena? Wow!!!

Agreed. Also surprisingly vulnerable Eric saying a lot more than he meant to. "Passionate, primal sex"? I don't blame Sookie for being uneasy, especially after witnessing his encounter with Yetta.
Bad news family that Sam comes from.
Wolves = beautiful.
I don't like the king of Mississippi any more than I like the queen of Louisiana.
Lorena on fire and me without marshmallows. Damn.

Also loved Andy telling Jason, "you're prettier than most girls" cause it's SO TRUE, and then later Jason saying he never got to sit in the front seat of a police car before. Heh heh. And I recalled Diane's comments about the relationship Eric had with Godric, and how he is now looking for that with Sookie, and whoa, Godric shows up in this ep! And Godric tells him that a vampire can't afford to be swayed by emotions, and yet it's his icky human-like emotions that are compelling him to help Sookie. Very cool! So where the heck is Jessica's dead guy? Did he turn into a vampire-zombie hybrid?

Mott was scouting the house for his own nefarious reasons. He could have gotten rid of the body as a means to get his hooks into Jessica. Pam, OTOH, gets as close to maternal as she is capable with Jessica. She might have done it acting in loco parentis. Finding the body was no problem. Either vampire most assuredly could smell it and track it to its location.

One thing I did notice was that Eric commanded Sookie to let him in and she replied "Please come in, Mr. Northman" as if she were under his thrall. But I thought one of the things that made her special was that she couldn't be put under the thrall of vampires? But I figure if anyone can put someone under a thrall, it would be Eric.
