Lovely.
The University wants to reduce my salary by 8% (and everyone else's, as well). This would mean I'd be making LESS than I made when I started here 6 six years ago.
I'm so getting a new job. Seriously - they honestly think that a Ph.D. and six years of postdoctoral experience are worth $44,000 a year? In SAN FRANCISCO?
I get that we're in a budget crisis, but, honestly, someone needs to explain to me why those of us making crap wages for long hours have to take the same percentage hit as the people at the top, making in the seven figures. Especially since, in terms of real losses, 8% is much more for us than for them.

today I both go in to college to get my results for the year and go off to Ipswich for a Big Family Wedding that is Formal and a Big Deal and stuff. ... mum went through all my clothes sorting out the acceptable outfit. It's a whole Thing.
I went through all my shiny sorting out the best bits, and painted my nails. I still have about three hours before there's any point leaving the house. Win, I guess. Will not be back til the weekend, am not taking my computer.

Hey--if Mom disapproves of your normal wear for a formal wedding (Hey, I couldn't come up with anything suitable for that kind of "do" either!) howzabout hitting her up for a quickie Mom/Daughter bonding shopping trip? Uh...(remembers what the day or so before a wedding is like)...maybe not.

Crap for your situation and crap that I accidentally deleted my posting that could tell you that mid-level federal civil service employees with batchelor's degrees (or less) make about what you do. I can't find the OPM chart again, but it's public domain. You can look it up if it will give you ammunition to fight for your wage.

James' Q&AWhat Shakespearean villian(s) would you love to portray? I ask, because I think you'd make a great Iago! Exactly - so that would be the one!
Do you use funny voices when you read to your kids at bedtime? Uhm, my kids are too old, they don't want me to read to them anymore. But when I did, the voices I used were (adopts exaggerated proper diction and posture) appropriate and not funny at all, which led to the drama of the book. (laughs loudly) But no really, they weren't funny voices but they were right for the story - so yes, I would use different voices, but in a way that the kids didn't even process that the voice changes - it was just integrated as part of the story.
Technically speaking, which singer has the skills you’d most love to emulate? Bruce Springsteen – he has the most honest voice out there right now. I would love to get a little tiny John Lennon, who was, afterall, the original Kurt Cobain, in me as well.
What is the origin of the name Piccolo? Online I’m told it was from the musical instrument but I don't know if that’s true or not.
What prompted you to start a You Tube page with your son Sullivan? I wanted to introduce Sullivan to fame. I was counting on somebody being rude in the talkbacks, but the comments were all so nice that I don't think I got the lesson I was looking for for my son, which is that fame is a double-edged sword. Right now it just totally looks cool to him and I wish people weren't quite so polite. (laughs)
Either/Or Star Trek or Star Wars Wow. Uhm, both. Star Trek came first of course and Star Trek gives me hope for the future. Star Wars rekindled a deep mythology - Star Wars is basically a thousand year old story. It's amazing that it made so much money because we've been told that story a thousand times - but it's just such a good story. So, yeah. both. I'm not gonna choose.
Ginger, Mary Ann or Mrs. Howell? Oh!! Totally NOT Ginger! Mary Ann. Totally Mary Ann. Because Ginger would never be true to you. I live in Hollywood. I know! (laughs)
Finish this sentence: At home my favorite item is ... Keys to let me in the door. Home is a good place. I tend to be emotional when... I breathe.

I mean, it's not, but it won't kill us. Our daughter's college fund will wait a year or so, maybe. All the more reason to hope this job I'm applying for turns out to be a good one, with people who are progressive about pregnant women. 'Cause that would be a big INCREASE in salary and a decrease in commute time and work time, both.

My sister makes at least what I do, without a college degree, in Sacramento working for the county. Her husband, with his Microsoft IT certification, makes a lot more. It's because academic science is completely fucked up as a culture. Here's the culture, in a nutshell: You do this because you love it, not for the money. Thus, like a nun or monk, you should be willing to do it for very little and devote your entire self to it. You may marry, and even have children, but this should not change the fact that, in order to succeed, you need to work seven-day weeks and 11-hour days. And that's not really an exaggeration.

That's about what I make (after 20 years on the job), which I know is good for 2 years of college and living expenses in this area are probably a third of what yours are. So. they 'want' to, or its a done deal? Our company froze our salary this year, and also took away 401K matches. Next, they'll probably make us contribute more to our insurance premium. I hear Walmart is building 100 more stores and hiring 12,000 people. Good luck with the new job search. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you. (also - drink water )

Still tired, not quite as much today, though. Possibly because I did not attempt an exercise walk yesterday on top of all my other chores. I had a small burst of creative energy last night - not a firecracker, more of a fizzle. Anyway, I finished (I thought) the power surge mini healing dolls and put away those seed beads. This morning while showering (I get lots of ideas in the shower), I realised/decided/heard the dolls complaining that their backs need beadwork too. So it's time to get out the idea sketchbook and do some doodles. *Insert Willow quote here* What I really need is a basic drawing class. Not the self-portrait class the Brea Art Museum offers (and by the way, self-portrait, ewwww, same as photos of self), just something to train my hands to reproduce the ideas in my head. I can't draw a straight line without a ruler or a circle or oval without a template, never could, and I'd really like to be able to get my ideas on paper. It's very quiet around here - The Husband has left for work, the cats are fed and napping, and the daughters Elder and Younger are still in bed.

(also - drink water ) It's being proposed at the July Regents meeting. Odds are good it'll be accepted, I'd guess. I will pinch, a bit, if we're expected to manage childcare on LESS money than we're used to having. I may wind up arranging that lab day care after all. (five of us have or will have kids between newborn and two years by the time I deliver, and we've considered taking turns to use Karla and Reza's apartment across the street to do childcare. Everyone would take one day to be the babysitter, and the other four we'd all work an extra couple of hours, or come in on a weekend day.

Also something like 30+ years in paint and coatings, but still, your education and dedication should count for something. The LA Times has an editorial advising the state to double fees at the community colleges. Oh well, if that actually happens, I guess we won't have to worry about Kitty getting in - we may be the only people who can afford Fullerton CC. And that only because the Aged Ps are helping massively with the girls' college funds. Possible tax credit my ass, it doesn't help you to come up with the money in the first place. I apologise if this is incoherent; it makes sense to my poor soggy brain at the moment. More tea.
