This one's sad. Wes trying so hard and just digging a big hole. Everyone makes sense from their own data set. But Wes not trusting his team, that's all emotion. He's feeling a bit backstabbed and like Fred and Gunn have let him down, probably twice with the tree and the carousel both going wrong. So he doesn't talk to them. Cordelia is away and he can't talk to her, they don't even know if she has a phone. And Angel? Well with the laughing I think we know the minute Wes decides to talk to him... and that's when the signs kick in. Wesley's tendency to trust people who have just tried to bzap him, threaten his life, etc, is a bit worrying. It's part of that not minding if he dies thing. He doesn't weigh things properly cause he doesn't count himself properly. Walking in and saying to kill him instead of Angel, that he means. That kind of loyalty you've got to love, however stupid he gets because of it. And then there's all those revenge motives twisted around everything. And a few layers of what it means to be a father, or a son. You think if Wes had the kind of father he could absolutely rely on he'd be ready to believe the worst here?
So all the motives are set up.
And "the father will kill the son"
It's important though that Wes wasn't relying on one prophecy or commentary for that information. He went to other powers to hear the news direct. Were they trustworthy powers? In his 'verse? Not so likely. But he did the work, put himself in danger to do it. Wasn't just jumping on the word of one bit of paper, certainly not one paper a demon later claimed to have altered.
And, by what we see later, was the prophecy even wrong?
Just one of those twisty self fulfilling sorts.
All that about how happy the baby makes Angel... knowing Angelus and the curse? Twist the knife, because you have to *worry* about that. Love broke it once, and it was a love Angel is saying was more painful than this. Now he's got love and happiness again, the possibility that of itself could break the curse? Seems solid. So it's really cute seeing Angel happy... and horrible to have to worry about it.
Sucks to be Wes.
Still, if he'd understood loyalty and not got sucked into that 'hard choices' rubbish and possibly had enough sleep for once? Things would have worked a lot different.
