Appalling: www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/15/jon-stewart-takes-on-30-r_n_321985.htmlAlthough when Jeff Sessions tried to frame it as: "government shouldn't be allowed to dictate what private corporations put in their contracts" was such a dodge. The amendment didn't care what Halliburton put in their contract (well, I'm sure Franken and others did care] but the amendment simply wanted to instruct government to not do business with them. Appalling. I hope/assume that this vote will crop up in their re-election campaigns. Well, JS's point that these are GOVERNMENT contracts was a really good one. Um, yeah. That's exactly when government should dictate the contents of a contract.

I have to be more awake and less sick when I think about this, but the US has laws about its domestic contractors- just because someone is working internationally should not be an excuse to strip them of legal recourse when their fellow workers are criminals. Julia, sorry, not a position I can reconcile with my own Christian ethics, o party of professing Christians..

Anytime a contract is drawn up between 2 parties, of course Party A should have say about what does into it. Duh (on my part).

The thirty who voted against, with a list of which are up for election next year: Lamar Alexander (R-TN) John Barrasso (R-WY) Kit Bond (R-MO) Sam Brownback (R-KS) Jim Bunning (R-KY) Richard Burr (R-NC) Saxby Chambliss (R-GA) Tom Coburn (R-OK) Thad Cochran (R-MS) Bob Corker (R-TN) John Cornyn (R-TX) Mike Crapo (R-ID) Jim DeMint (R-SC) John Ensign (R-NV) Mike Enzi (R-WY) Lindsey Graham (R-SC) Judd Gregg (R-NH) James Inhofe (R-OK) Johnny Isakson (R-GA) Mike Johanns (R-NE) Jon Kyl (R-AZ) John McCain (R-AZ) Mitch McConnell (R-KY) James Risch (R-ID) Pat Roberts (R-KS) Jeff Sessions (R-AL) Richard Shelby (R-AL) John Thune (R-SD) David Vitter (R-LA) Roger Wicker (R-MS) Of those, the following are up for reelection in 2010: Tom Coburn (R-OK) Mike Crapo (R-ID) Jim DeMint (R-SC) Johnny Isakson (R-GA) Richard Shelby (R-AL) John McCain (R-AZ) John Thune (R-SD) David Vitter (R-LA) Richard Burr (R-NC) Julia, an interesting set of names, eh?

When I moved to TN in 1979, 30 years ago, after 23 years in PA, 3 years in IL and 1 year in Denver within a week I was convinced that I'd fallen into a time vortex to the 1950's (really, the grocery store looked like something out of Mad Men). So, about 25 years between the rest of the world. Since then, I think we've slipped another ten years back and so are now up to about MAYBE the mid-70's in our social evolution. Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander, I don't care how conservative you are in general on other issues, but this is upsetting.

Really, what was I thinking, was a video clip of Glenn Beck. My head is exploding: www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/19/glenn-beck-slams-obama-en_n_326632.htmlApparently volunteering = communism. And volunteering or even encouraging others to volunteer possibly because the president has encouraged it himself = some kind of conspiracy that will result in .... communism. Odd, I would have thought 'loving your neighbor as yourself' was more likely to = Christ-like behavior. [Although, there is all that pesky communist lifestyle exhortation in the Bible about sharing your worldly goods, etc.] Silly me. Note to self: do NOT watch Glenn Beck. Period. His logic is not like earth logic.

So, I finally called my Congressmen -- 2 senators and my rep. to exhort them to pass a health insurance reform bill with a public option. All 3 offices answered by pleasant female voices within 2 rings. Senator Lamar Alexander and Rep Jim Cooper's offices asked for my address (to establish voter legitimacy I assume -- I also spelled my last name for them, unasked.) Senator Bob Corker didn't ask for address, but his phone-rep said they tally all incoming calls into yes, no, and undecided and give him a daily tally. So while I was at it I mentioned my distress at his vote on the Franken amendment. She asked if I'd seen his response to that complaint. She said it was quite detailed. I may go look at his website just to see what rationalization is out there. Anyway, all 3 calls took under 2 minutes. Here is where to get phone numbers advocacy.barackobama.com/healthcare/campaigns/13/call_scripts/34/call_sessions/new?source=20091020_DO_OFA

Strange goings on in my neck of the woods.
So - this is about 20 minutes east of where I live and very near the nuclear power plant.
The bartender at my golf course works security at the slaughterhouse, and he's never felt that his bosses were doing anything suspicious. He's the guy at the beginning of the clip being asked by a couple of reporters for comment - and he went into an office and had no comment.
I talked to him a bit about it last night. He said that it was quite a scene - like a scene from 24!
Kinsman, IL - Federal agents conducted a raid Sunday afternoon at a goat meat processing plant near Morris, Illinois. The secretive operation was led by the Chicago FBI office, the Feds are being very tight-lipped on what they found and why they were even there. Spokesman Ross Rice confirms agents were at 6260 Kinsman Road, in Kinsman, Illinois. The business is called First World Management. Rice would not say why agents were there but said nobody was taken into custody. The FBI said the raid began Sunday morning and ended in the late afternoon. They were at the plant about nine hours total.

Things might actually get done for the good if people would learn this small truth: it is easy and fast to make things worse; making things better takes time and care (which hard lesson I learned long ago, and Anna Quindlen said in that article). Julia, the law of unintended consequences must be respected.

Julia, the law of unintended consequences must be respected. Yes, my thoughts exactly. But then I'm mellowed. And I've always liked Anna Q, even if/when I don't agree with her. And I'm not disenchanted with Obama, either. I've been glad to see some push-back on Cheney's "dithering" comment -- like George Will telling him that he should have 'dithered' over Iraq invasion decision. But then, tiny baby steps is how I run much of my own life --- have I mentioned my house renovation?

OK - so how to deal with fundamentalist types who used to tell me that both Vince and I were going to Hell, if we didn't accept Jesus as our one and only Saviour, and who now try to console me with "you'll see Vince again in heaven one day?"
ACCKK!! Now either:
--They are being completely phony (they don't really believe what they're saying)
--They've inexplicably and without telling anyone or showing any other signs of it, changed their beliefs (I don't think so . . .)
--In an attempt to keep from facing "their truth" here, they've twisted things around in their heads so as to believe that (deep down perhaps) Vince shared their convictions, and so do I (he didn't and I don't).
To date, I have been completely ignoring the "heaven" comments and changing the subject, but - I don't know what's best. Should I just continue the ignoring and hope it abates, or am I setting myself to explode? Mostly, I'd like to yell: "Don't you mean 'I'll see him again in Hell?' PLEASE SHUT UP!!! You know nothing about my son, the afterlife, or anything else!!!!"
Maybe I am being too harsh and they are just dealing with a feeling of "don't know what to say," so they blurt out platitudes they are accustomed to saying? I dunno.
