My Dearest S’cubes, I am very sorry to have to tell you that my sweetheart Jan is in the hospital. She has been there since Monday before last. For the last few weeks she had growing weakness and pain which we thought was due to a pinched nerve in her back. Her doctor told her she had to “ride it out”. But as time passed she continued to deteriorate: more pain, increased weakness, less ability. Finally things got so bad she was unable to stand. We called the EMTs and took her to the hospital with the idea of getting her better pain management. What we got instead was a diagnosis of cancer: undifferentiated carcinoma, stage four. It is very aggressive and fast moving. My Sweetie is dying. We think she has three months, probably less. Please pray for us. Rich, all my love to you and Jan. It is supremely unfair that both of you have to endure this. I am so very, very sorry. My thoughts are with you both.

Rich, I have no adequate words for you and Jan. You're both in my thoughts.
Sending you all my love and hope.

I am sitting here reading all your kind words of concern and I'm crying. I'm leaving in a few minutes to see Jan. I will give her your loving thoughts. She is having surgery today to repair a place in her hip broken by a tumor. We are hoping it will lessen her pain. Jason and Angelique are here through the weekend. Jan's friends from Connecticut are here visiting. Our priest, who retired to Massachusetts, is coming tomorrow. Our friends Kathy, Anne and Amy have been a tremendous help these last couple of weeks. And we know we have you guys, so we do not feel alone. Love you all. Love you, too, Rich. I've been thinking of you both all day and I am praying for a miracle. I hope the surgery gives Jan some relief. Strength and courage to you both.

On a lighter note... Am I the only one annoyed about the model that won on Project Runway? Just watched it today... Hence the late comment.
I think Carol Hannah is better of for not having won and that, for the purposes of the competition, the right designer won. Though, unless she has the last winner's luck, this'll probably be the last we hear from her.

Jim got up at 5 am to fly up to Chicago and go to the NU game with his favorite BIL and nephew (13 years old). Wonderful football weather (53 degrees and sun in Chicago on Nov. 21!). AND NU knocked off another ranked team!
Fantastic day for him.

Today is Aged Ps' Day. I'll try to check in when we get back, but if not, I'll talk at you tomorrow. Oh, my Bestest Buddy called unexpectedly last night - She can't make the traditional Solstice Cookie Day because she has a guest flying in from Alaska that morning. So, since we've been postponing and cancelling and cutting back our Ladies' Days all year, she decided that Enough is Enough. She's going to drive down here from Thousand Orcs on her furlough Friday, and we're running away to Fullerton to get BOILD*. She was thinking spa, but it's at the mall, and the mall on the last Friday before Christmas? Worst nightmare. Anyway, it's something to look forward to in December, especially as her plans for my birthday have been put off until January at the earliest. She's the best friend ever. *Bugger Off, It's Ladies' Day. I made pins for us to wear, even - purple metallic ribbon with silver letter beads and purple AB seed beads. Huh, I thought Shannon was the only one to call it that. Another cousin's kid's wife. They live in what gets called Poor Torchured these days... Julia, having already conversed with oddly bright-yeyed spawn this morning and in need of a list to get me through breakfast without forgetting something I've been calling it that for years. Picked it up from the same group of Mythies who called San Bernardino the Desolation of Smaug, if I remember right. Early morning bright-eyed spawn are an abomination right up there with early morning bright-eyed cats who want fed on time.
