Post by beccaelizabeth on yesterday at 10:47am I went to see Avengers Age of Ultron and am having spoiler filled feels about it over on DW beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/2907601.html beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/2907765.html beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/2908099.html or start at my front page beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/ to take advantage of nested cut tags that I tried to use to hide more spoilery spoilers more. LJ doesn't have that feature and I'm not sure anyone else would agree with my idea of more anyway, but I did try. Wasn't squee, was a bit confused, think spending the last half hour really needing to pee probably didn't help. ... 2hr 21min, long movie is long. I think it needed to be either longer or shorter, pull an entire confusing to me thread out or give them enough space to not confuse me. but possibly I'm more easily confused than is helpful. #shrugs# ETA: the marvel tag on my DW probably works better than the front page, though I'm not quite sure I've been consistent using it. beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/tag/marvelAlso they filmed at the UEA so I went and took pictures of me at the Avengers Academy beccaelizabeth315.tumblr.com/post/118378606842/had-a-nice-day-at-the-avengers-academy-got-my

Saw Age of Ultron today. Am bothered by some stuff, even though it's almost 3 hours go by very quickly. There are some sexist hints and quips that I didn't know how to take. There were some problematical actions by a lot of characters that I think I was supposed to recognize as heroes.
Then again, when did Joss EVER write simple characters? The most noble among them have weaknesses and the foulest have redeeming qualities. But didn't we deal with that in Buffy? In Angel? In Firefly?
I'm disturbed by some of the sexism that was evident in the movie, but I never felt it was hostile. More like it was careless. And for the most part they self-corrected like boys who have been told the game has changed but haven't quite absorbed the new rules ("...b-but I could go there BEFORRRRE....") They treat their female colleague and Shield Agents respectfully. There's problems, but they come from both the cultures they've been raised in (Thor's a warrior god and a royal one at that, Stark's a billionaire with literally thousands of employees, Rogers was born in the 20s and is a WWII veteran). Natasha is treated well in their midst, never with condescension or innuendo, never demeaned. As a well-respected full parter her assignments are as difficult and dangerous as the guys' and she is kidded with the same good humor they use on each other. Hark back to the late series Agent Carter and compare how Peggy was treated by HER compatriots. By comparison the Avengers are truly enlightened.
I didn't like the story Black Widow tells of being sterilized as a gradulation ceremony from her assassin/spy school. Was this because she identified herself by her ability to reproduce? I don't think so, although to interpret what she says in that light is not entirely incorrect. Our bodies do play a large part in how we see ourselves. I can only try to look through her eyes. I know my own reproductive abilities never defined me as a woman or as a human being; but I gave them up voluntarily after having had all the children I wanted. I don't think I can imagine what it must have been like to have that ability stripped away without my consent. It's another kind of rape, and to have that personal part of you taken before you even know whether you want to put it to use--Yes, I think I can understand her trauma--and her barely contained rage. Can I accept it as the point where she became a killer? I don't know. Maybe. It would, I think, depend upon my view of myself at the age it was done, among many other mental, physical and emotional factors. Perhaps it was the violation rather than the biological consequence that tipped the scales. Perhaps seeing herself as diminished as a human being did the damage... How would a male in her position react?
And what about the anger-machine? How does the duo that is Bruce Banner manage his deepening love for a woman as angry, as damaged in her own way as he is in his? This isn't a sex-for-relief thing. I don't believe these terrified two have taken that step yet. He's terrified of injuring a woman already so badly damaged. His two selves are really the same angry, hurt, frightened, wary, brilliant and sensitive man. Hulk leaves wreckage wherever he goes, but never deliberately harms anyone. Lacking ALL emotional control and having little mind to work with the green machine only wants the violence to GO AWAY. Yet the calmest thing to enter his cloudy world fills him with terror that no outer space monster could generate. The genius that is Bruce is actually the more dangerous. Bruce is the one working on weapons and energy sources powerful enough to destroy whole planets. How does that prey on his mind?
Thor's a butthead. He's powerful, honorable, noble--and a butthead. He's sexist, crude, tactless and thoughtless. In that he meets his match in Tony Stark. Stark's surface is far more sophisticated but he's every bit as much the butthead that his fellow Avenger. Yet both men are incredibly noble, giving everything they have to help people they don't even know--and in Thor's case aren't even quite the same species.
Good hearted all-American Rogers does his best to herd his fellow cats despite his rapidly disintegrating naivete' and even more rapidly developing disillusionment. He tries to be a big brother to people who don't need or want one and facing opponents beyond anything his gee-whiz mind can be expected to handle. The best among the good, if flawed team his inner problems reflects in his increasingly profane language.
How do you judge imperfect people?
Maybe that's better writing than we first gave it credit for?
I need to do more thinkage.

I've now been thinking about The Avenger I left out. Hawkeye who is perhaps the most complex and most damaged individual of the entire Avengers mess. Even in the first film where we knew litle about him, we knew he had a relationship with Natasha. He's deeply attached to her yet I was puzzled why the attachment was so unromantic. Well, it seems his heart is elsewhere. He loves his friend, but that's what she is. I admit I was surprised to find he was in a very happy if off-balanced marriage. No wonder he's so conflicted. In the first film his mind was stolen from him and while under Loki's influence he does a lot of damage. I thought that his mournful expression this time around was either guilt or just sorrow for the problems he had caused. Little did I suspect that he has a family. What is preying on his mind is the terrible realization that had Loki found out about them what kind of horrors would he have brought down on their innocent heads just because he could.
What a hell he must be going through. I think that knowing Joss Hawkeye will either retire or will lose his family. Why? Because D'Hoffryn.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but enjoyed reading your posts.

I will have to wait until I can watch it at home. I just can't enjoy a movie that long; I never have been able to. I get antsy no matter what.
