Preview or (prequel, according to the title) of the upcoming Dr Who episode "Let's Kill Hitler", courtesy of the Younger Daughter. As she said in her email (yes, now we're emailing each other from the same PC ), "I think this basically sums up all the misgivings you had about the Melody/River storyline, huh?" Anne,

So, in non-spoilery openness...
Looks like Matt Smith is going to leave Doctor Who. Apparently, he'll regenerate during this year's Christmas special.
So, who do we think is the replacement? Could it be John Hurt? Oddly enough, it strikes me that the John Hurt character we see at the end of "The Name of the Doctor" is from DEEP in the Doctor's past, rather than a future self. The way the conversation was structured, it seemed to indicate that the whole taking on the name the Doctor was a result of the mysterious person's action. Which would, what, make him pre-Hartnell?
I wonder, too, if this means Moffat is considering stepping down as showrunner.

I've read some speculation among other fans that Hurt is the 8th Doctor, and that the things he did were related to the Time War. Pre-Hartnell is a theory I haven't encountered before, but I like it. It'd also give him another reason to be running away from home, that he'd done something he thought was unforgivable. That'd be pretty cool, finding out more about the Doctor's origin story, and appropriate for a 50th anniversary. I'll ask Kitty to keep me posted; she hangs out on Who forums so she's likely to get new info faster than I would.

Hurt could be the Doctor that the 8th Doctor regenerates into, but Paul McGann is the 8th Doctor, in an ongoing way in Big Finish audios. I've seen a lot of people saying we don't see 8 in Clara's big flashback journey, but other people reckon we see his costume for just a few seconds. If Hurt is instead of McGann I'd be annoyed, there's no reason to do that. The only places Hurt can fit are pre-1, post-11 and after-8. ... now an assortment of mint jokes are springing to mind... Combine it with Clara looking in the history of the Time War and seeing the Doctor not being called the Doctor and that looks like after-8. But it's Moffat, so the only thing we really know is it will all mean something we didn't expect. Smith leaving: I saw pictures of him from recent with his 11 hair shaved off, so I wondered. There's a whole Trenzalore at the fall of the 11th thing that hasn't quite played out yet. Hurt being 12 in an ongoing way is ruled out by Moff's quotes in the BBC article, where he says the next Doctor doesn't know who they're going to be yet. Unless he's lying to troll us, but he's basically declared open season on speculation on who gets cast next, not hinted we know. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22741493"Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become the Doctor," Moffat hinted. Votes for the next Doctor: not another white bloke.

Apparently, it's 7 to 1 odds that it's Chiwetel Ejiofor. Which would ROCK.

I
I'm not sure if this will work, but here goes.
I think this answers our question about where John Hurt fits in the timeline. Eeep.

I had some feels beccaelizabeth.dreamwidth.org/2667962.htmluseful data: the names he says are his companions in the Big Finish audio adventures. They are fully acted audio plays, multi episode, more than 70 stories so far, so he has had a lot of adventures that people only watching the TV would be puzzled about. It's because of the audios that 8 is the Doctor I always vote for in the favourite Doctor polls.
