Yeah, I know...I've just rewatched "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and that shot of Zoe and Wash by the fire, holding each other, made me really sad. Yeah, I was thinking about the fact that it was the only really healthy relationship on the show, and - ZAP! Very Joss. As with Tara/Willow - just when they get it to be what it should be - ZAP! And also Giles/Jenny...a case might even be made for Xander/Anya, 'cause that could have been good, again, now that they were both working out their personal stuff....

I was chatting with Greg at GenCon yesterday, and he told me he picked up a copy of the new Serenity RPG book that was just released that day. It includes character information for both Wash and Book, and he said while their inaugural game yesterday was supposedly set just after the events of the movie, it was also set up including Wash as one of the characters. So he said that even though having Wash "there" bummed him out, he put on his best poker face, especially since Vlad had recently renewed his threat of bodily harm should Greg spoil any aspect of the movie.

Well, imagine the outcry if they hadn't included Wash and Book, and then people asked why, etc etc. Slippery slope and all. Inaugural game? Is that like a beta version? Me stupid about these things...

Besides, people can always set their game at a time when both of the guys were still alive and kicking after they know. No--not stupid at all. I just meant that since GenCon was the first time the book was available for sale, it was the first time roleplayers could play Serenity with "canon" information.

So, I've just finished "Finding Serenity", which is a collection of essays - and can I just say, the one about the Reavers: Could you BE more wrong? Good essays, for the most part, although I really do think Nancy Holder brought a LOT of her own subtext, given that she thinks that Joss fell off the feminism wagon with Firefly. All the women are subordinant to men, that sort of crap.

OMG, I can't believe they killed Wash! That was the most shocking part of the movie for me. It was how sudden it was. One second he was saying his leaf on the wind line, the next...gone. I loved the movie. It was even better than I thought it would be, and I can't wait to see it again! I was upset that Book died, but it didn't affect me as much as I would have expected it to. But Wash... I'm still reeling from it now.

And you're absolutely right--it's so unexpected, and brings you right back to the reality of their situation after the brief euphoria of seeing them land in (mostly) one piece.

OK, my serious thoughts: 1. The beginning felt a little slow...not the Simon beginning but the Serenity beginning. But I know it's necessary to set up certain things we'd already know. I know what you mean, but I was doing the fangirl *squee!* over being back on board the ship. Action!Simon was fun to watch, though. ;D And given how smart and introverted Simon is, I'm not at all surprised that he would take pains to conceal his part in River's rescue. I also believe that it exposes another layer of his character -- he didn't truly trust Mal and co., despite the events of "Safe" and "Ariel." And in those early scenes, I somehow got the feeling that repressed anger -- maybe even rage -- helped to power his rescue. When Simon gets angry, he gets stubborn and sarcastic and apparently agile and ballsy. Oooh! I would so totally love to read about an expansion of your thoughts on this. And Sara's. ;D I'm sure shirtless!Simon didn't hurt either.
