Hi - I have a few recommendations: Jack Passarella is a NJ author. He has 2 books -WITHER and WITHER'S RAIN. They take place in Massachusetts today, but there is historical witchcraft that intrudes. He has written an Angel book - Avatar and a Buffy book GHOUL TROUBLE.
I have several historical fiction books that have nothing to do with vampires/witches, etc.
Margaret Lawrence has 3 books in which the main character is a midwife in 1700s Maine. Her profession is suspect - many think she uses witchcrafty methods in her use of herbs, etc. They are very intense but the female protagonist is strong and fascinating like another woman we know.
Victoria Thompson has a series about a midwife in early 1900s New York. She tends mostly to poor immigrants and in every book gets involved in a murder which she tries to solve much to the chagrin of the police detective. One is called MURDER ON WASHINGTON SQUARE.
Robin Paige writes about another strong women, An Irish-American woman who surreptiously writes novels. She moves to England and becomes involved in murders and romance. One of the titles is DEATH AT BISHOP'S KEEP. Some of the characters in the novels are real people, such as Sherlock Holmes and Rudyard Kipling.
Another historical/murder mystery series is by Stephanie Baron who writes using Jane Austen as her protagonist and detective. One of her titles is JANE AND THE GENIUS OF THE PLACE.
Finally a series that takes place mostly in San Francisco in the early 1900s. Fremont Jones has left her proper Boston family to open her own detective agency. She is very feisty and refuses to marry her lover, although she lives with him. One title is EMPEROR NORTON'S GHOST.
All of the books are available in paperback.

Re the Fremont Jones mysteries, I think the author spells her name Dianne Day with two n's. I read a lot of mysteries and I thought I would like this series. I got tripped up in the first book with her selection of her first lover. I couldn't get past that and thus I lost confidence in Fremont Jones as a character I wanted to know.
I've been reading the mysteries by Brenda Joyce with Francesca Cahill as an adventurous young woman from a wealthy New York family at the end of the nineteenth century. There are at least five in the series so far. the first book is called Deadly Love. This first book came out with Brenda Joyce using a bit of a pseudonym, B.D. Joyce. But it looks like later printings went back to her real name.

I LOVE them, and so do many others. I ordered my copy the first day you could. I'll be out of town when it comes in, and I wanted to make sure I'd have a first edition. I saw on Amazon last night that there's a Special Edition of it also being released - over $60 tho, I think. I've loaned my HP books to lots of people - all adults - and everyone loved them. The office I work in takes an afternoon off, all together, to go to the films when they're released. We have a HP lunch beforehand with a sorting hat to determine which table you sit at, and an HP trivia quiz, etc. They might call these children's books, but they certainly appeal far outside that designation - and isn't it wonderful?! The author's imagination is a delight. BTW, welcome! Hope to see much more of you. Mary

Elizabeth Peters/Barbara Michaels/Barbara Mertz's website has a sneak preview (PDF file) of Amelia Peabody's Egypt. It looks like a hoot, and also a good overview of Egyptology of the period. Supposedly, there will be photos of the Emerson family and friends. Should be interesting.

My grandmother loved Barbara Michael's books and passed them on to me when she was done. When I read them now, it's like talking to my grandmother again. I think Barbara Michaels (whatever her real name is) actually does have an academic background in Egyptology but I just may be so tired I'm confusing that with someone else. I need to stop posting tonight before I hurt myself.

She's written two books of Egyptology, Red Land, Black Land and Temples, Tombs and Heiroglyphs under her own name. They're both really good, especially if you have an older child who is interested in ancient Egypt.
Her website is at: www.mpmbooks.com/

I saw in an obituary of Hume Cronyn this morning that he is survived by his wife, Susan Cooper Cronyn. I did a search and this is the same Susan Cooper who is the author of The Dark is Rising series. I wonder what Hume thought of her Shakespearean book, King of Shadows?

Gail He married Susan Cooper two years or so after Jessica died. The last book in The Dark is Rising sequence is Silver on the Tree. King of Shadows is about an American boy actor, Nat, who is somehow transported/exchanged with an Elizabethan boy; Nat forms a bond with Shakespeare, playing Puck for him. I actually cried as I finished the book because I found it so moving.
