Well I'm awake so I may as well watch
but my brain probably isnt up to speed so I may not come up with much
specially if I forget to change the contrast on my monitor, because the setting that makes white on black non radioactive makes Angel episodes be basically a bunch of faces floating in blackness.
We start with a fairly abstract couple of shots of lights in the darkness. LA by night. Pretty.
Angel acting drunk. Angel acting. odd idea. He isnt exactly subtle.
Angel wears black. Repeat that statement for pretty much the whole of forever.
He also wears one ring on the middle finger of each hand.
Presumably one is the claddaugh. The other looks like a plain band.
um, I can see the stunt guy a lot in that first fight
very cool stunt guy but he isnt meant to be seen
In his very first fight in LA Angel goes vamp face. And fixates on blood. This is to introduce him to new viewers I guess. But also maybe that he is a bit out of control all out on his own?
And that alley. Seen in ever ep thereafter. Its a very pretty shot. With the coat, and the darkness.
The opening credits are always fun to analyse but I cant be bothered right now.
Angel's building is fun. Complicated shapes, vaguely gothic pointy door but also really plain, slightly out of time look- not old fashioned but with old bits, not modern.
And weapons. Pause while I drool.
Doyle. Brown and white again, but this time with white red black under it. Add green and blue to that when he sneezes and he's pretty colorful.
Brown is your standard earth tones, whereas red is for passion. So, earthy yet passionate Doyle.
So Angel had stripped down to being all sleeveless before Doyle interrupted him. Makes an interesting image. Also means he's got kinda vulnerable, then Doyle talks.
I guess Angel doesnt breathe recreationally or he'd have smelled there was someone else there.
That apartment is very brown. Lots of brick. But theres bits of faded out greeny blue around. Ooh, and candle sconce all gothic. Lots of interesting twiddly bits in the background.
Doyle is wearing a ring on his middle finger too.
Also a chain round his neck, presumably with some kind of pendant on it but that not visible.
In case you're wondering, this little recap bit bores me all to bitses. I pay it very little mind.
The picture directly behind Doyle is a bit hard to make out but could be a drawing of a church with rose windows. Looks all twiddly. Angel having pictures of churches feels vaguely fitting.
And I say it many, many times, but- Doyle wasnt sent to get Angel to kill the bad things. He was already doing that. Doyle was sent to stop Angel from being so cut off from people, to stop him going isolate and dark.
Worked real well
"Its not just saving lives, its saving souls. Possibly your own in the process."
which I quote again, and again, because while I thought this was the mission I wholeheartedly agree with it.
"You gotta make with the grown up talk now."
Doyle just isnt subtle. Or polite. And yet this is who TPTB chose to get into Angel's life? And it worked is the scary part.
"Have you looked in the mirror lately? I guess you really havent." LOL
Coffee place. Awkward dorky barely knows how to talk Angel.
Black white red on the coffee place people.
those are the three main attention getting colors, the ones most noticed.
woah, Angel's trousers are *grey*! Newsflash!!!
;D
so, he's lightening up already.
"Because you looked lonely. And I figured we had something in common."
awww, puppy cuteness!
Angel has a chain round his neck too now.
Chains is interesting. Ties. Binding. Restraint. Connection. Value. Lots of symbolism in little bits of metal.
She has an extra shiny chain. And when she starts talking about her before, her roots, slips on a brown jacket. Earthy again.
"You're an actor."
hmmm
acting means pretending but also doing. Angel is indeed.
Cordy in a nice wine red dress. And lots of shiny round her throat, but it doesnt look like chains exactly.
Theres a whole alone in a crowd thing going on with this party.
Car. Funny.
LA all about the car you drive. Making a mistake about which is his car. Not on the right track yet? Cause Angel's way and Doyle's way look the same from the outside, but they really arent.
Whichever one he's driving he really isnt afraid to wreck it. Insane and not so worky. Helpless chick isnt crash proof Angel.
At home and we see how few clothes Cordy has. Like a couple of tops and that dress, all looking red. She's gone all grey away from the crowds. Awwww.
And her flat is a nasty sort of orangey beige ick color.
Angel's place looks all warm and red in comparison.
"I have relationship issues too."
also funny
Some of the bricks are red and some gold. Color coded areas. Useful for filming I guess.
The damsel in distress in the white and grey top is kinda same colors as Cordy was in her flat. links them?
Angel is a lot more tan on his own show. Which I knew cause make up guy said. But switching between BtVS1 and this, very different.
And Angel has a grey top now. All 3 in grey. Lightened up more or just more up? Cant see properly but I think his trousers are back to black.
Shades of grey right from the start
Angel catches fire really quickly when it suits the plot.
Bad vamps tie is all icky wiggles. Or checkered up close.
Very dark grey suit.
Coroners and police are blue. Doyle spikes are blue. Probably lack of connection.
Now Doyle has a green shirt. Much quieter. Fits with the brown better.
no I have nothing symbolic to say about that. Except it would match his skin now.
"Then I'm gonna share my feelings." *evil grin* I love it when Angel gets vicious. *pause* I'm kind of a twisted person huh?
Big shiny white house. Good guys live in shadows and bad guys are shiny. This is LA.
Wolfram and Hart briefcase. Very dark suit. Pretty Lindsey.
Window go smash at bad guy place. See you, get to you.
"Theres no one left I care about."
"I am somebody."
Cordy in a whole different set of grey things.
I'm pretty sure she leaves grey behind once she goes to work for Angel.
They've got a hint of green and blue now actually.
Angel is back in black. Not lightened up even a teensy tiny bit.
Cordy with the same shiny neck thing and same color red wine clothes. Probably the dress and jumper we saw hanging up.
Doyle shirt looks more gold now.
The hat is not of the good. I wear hats. I like hats. I cannot like that hat.
it just occured to me that my reason for wearing hats could apply to Doyle in this situation and therefore be funny. Hats=helmets. Also, they are for being brave. Because the Trash Heap on Fraggle Rock said if you want to be brave, wear a hat. So, here Doyle is getting ready to go into battle, putting his brave on.
Cordy body language when she's putting effort into it involves a lot of movement and making her eyes big. You can tell she is acting. Large print.
Angel when he's trying to be innocuous wears Xanders shirts.
Okay, I cant prove they are actually specifically Xanders, but very loud prints.
As far away from basic black as he can get.
So black is scary. on purpose.
"hey you're a vampire"
see "I think it I say it"
this is maybe not the best time Cor...
eesh, when she nervous extra smiles its like it spilts her face in two. BIG smile.
oops. Just yawned and my ears popped and now its really really loud. I think maybe my neighbours are listening to Angel too. At 2am. really oops.
"You're about to get your ass kicked."
touching faith and a nice line for the advertising
Doyle's bit with driving away... or not, and driving to the rescue! Or actually not. Well, on balance his hearts in the right place.
I like Doyle's character arc. It felt sort of complete, even if it was really sad.
Doyle gets to do the bullet removing thing on semi naked Angel. Hurt comfort canon.
"Thought I was going to faint while barfing" compare to later Cordy, big changes. She gets good at the medical stuff way before the fighting stuff.
Shiny mirrors building, hiding stuff inside.
You know its really subtle but Angel isnt actually wearing black. I think its kinda very very very dark purple. Royal color that.
"Can you fly?"
;D
And Angel pats the card back into Lindsey's pocket. Groping from first meeting. Or, just total lack of regard for his personal space, a big alpha display. Angel rules this room with casual ease.
That lamp is wierd and twisty and kinda organic looking. I like it.
Oh, and the shot through the bars as Angel calls Buffy. Cage angel = Buffy love.
And now Doyle is blue under brown. Many colors guy.
Yeah, Angel is kinda purple.
And Cordy is yellow under white. Um, yellow whilst being scared of cockroach. Thats kinda funny.
No more grey tho. Brown trousers. Earthy Cordy too now.
"you think you can use me"
no offence to Cordy but that use me is where things go a bit wrong. Using people is one of Angel's problems.
"Are you game?"
"I'm game."
later its 'lets go to work', but it starts out 'game'. huh. like theres fun at the start but it goes away. duh.
Okay, so that one only took me an hour and a half to watch. Therefore very little writ about it. its 0230. My brain isnt sharp right now.
edit to add- green is new and untried, and blue is true, and Doyle is both of those.
