Wanna smile and laugh and have a good time this week? I thought so.
May I present, the 5th most requested Angel ep in the Sizzlin’ Episode Festival! Spin the Bottle Ah, youth. Is there anything more magical? Gunn: Vampires are real. . . . Wesley: I was telling! Angel: Were we in love? . . . Cordy: We were.
So - go forth and celebrate! Dig out your tapes, fire up the DVD, launch the brouser and read the screenplay. But most important of all – laugh, laugh, laugh!

You know, as I was watching this, I started thinking of how this and Tabula Rasa are alike and not alike.
In a lot of ways, they serve a very similar purpose. They wipe out all the interconnection between a group of people, take them all "back to basics", as it were. And we get to see . . . just them. In Spin the Bottle, though, we're seeing younger, more immature them. So, they still have old personalities to cling to. And that's where the big main difference is. Instead of starting with a "blank slate", like in TR, they are all dealing with their own issues but without any of the growth and seasoning that comes with time and experience.
Interesting how in both eps, though, neither of the vampires is all blood-thirsty monster guy, huh? I mean, yeah, Angel does start to act like that after the others attack him - but not right away.
That particular family of vamps are just so . . . special! Aren't they?
I love seeing how much each character is like, and not like, the person we know now. Cordy is the only one we've actually seen at the age they have been sent back to. We first saw Wes when he was still geeky, yes, but he was a grown adult. We saw human Angel, but later in his life - here he is all still . . . looking forward to the wild times we saw him have.
I just think it's so neat to see the big and small ways that the seeds of the people we know now are in them even when young.

Fave lines:
WESLEY: So who are you?
GUNN: I'm the guy that's gonna be kicking a whole mess of ass if somebody don't tell me what's going on.
CORDELIA: What do they call you for short?
-------
WESLEY: It's Wesley, thank you. Wyndham-Pryce. I am from the Watcher's Academy in southern Hampshire. In fact, I happen to be head boy.
CORDELIA: Gee, I wonder how you earned that nickname.
WESLEY: A lot of effort, I don't mind saying.
--------
"Oh, God. Oh, God. My hair. My hair. The government gave me bad hair!"
"Why is the devil sleepy?"
"It's about time the English got what's comin' to 'em. I'm rootin' for the slave."

Oh, we're both in school. Oh, gosh, let's be best friends so I can lose all my cool ones. All the gags with the weapons that Wes has up his sleeves!

Tidbits from the commentary: (which you should really watch if you have the DVDs, because Joss and Alexis are having too too much fun.)
Joss says that the impetus for the episode came from his and Alexis' desire to have fun visiting the "babbling idiot" that is "old school Wes" again. To see a classic Wesley fall.
Joss had a lot of odd camera directions, fast pushes and screen wipes and angles and so on because he wanted to strenthen the "oddness" of the plot.
Joss compared it to Tabula Rasa, but he also wanted it to be sort of an opposite of that ep. So he did little things to make it different - like having them be all high and trippy instead of passing out.
In the scene where Gunn and Wes talk (Gunn asks if he' the muscle, tells him to stay away from Fred, etc.), Joss told them to just take away all the light off Gunn's face, only put light on his hands - said "think Godfather III".
At the end of the same scene, they worked really hard to make Wes' line about having his throat cut and all his friends abandoning him not play as either pitying or threatening. They wanted it just . . . neutral.
Loved these lines:
AD: You really did just invite us to goof off. It's your own fault. JW: Yeah, well, I blame society.

I think one of the reasons I like this episode so much is the fact that it brought a bit of rolling on the floor laughter to a very dark grim time in the Angelverse. And while I enjoyed most of that season immensely (with the exception of Lilah's death and the whole ick/squick of Con/Cord) this was a lovely break in the gathering storm so to speak. Love all the lines quoted. I would have to agree with Cordelia on the bad hair. She looks so lovely now - I guess we all go through periods when we think - let's try something. A blonde bob, coupled with the natural changes of pregnancy, just didn't work for her. (was it blonde here - I can't remember and I don't have this episode though I wish I did) Kind of funny that both these weeks episodes have the female lead having bad hair days. (Hee, hee - shallow I know but I always enjoy fashion/hair comments as long as they are taken in the light-hearted spirit they are given in) I love Wesley. Poor tortured throat slit scruffy Wesley.

Poor tortured throat slit scruffy Wes. Smokin' hot angst-ridden but putting on that stiff upper lip British guy mask Wes.

I posted this in the Tabula Rasa Thread, but since it pertains to Spin The Bottle as well, I thought I'd post it here too. I'm glad you copied this here as well, because I think it's neat we ended up with these eps so close together - and they are the perfect opportunity to compare two examples of vamps in the same "family" who have forgotten they are vamps. The other thing to factor is, I guess, is the actual regression in Spin the Bottle. I mean, they are all sent back to being teenagers, so that means vamp!teen!Angel. (**snicker, snicker, teen Angel**) I wonder if we see a "different" vamp because of that aspect too.

Oh, I think that's true, and in TeenageAngel's reaction we really can see a lot of his belief that he has to live down to everyone else's (his father's) "expectations." We can really see how he grew to be the party animal and womanizer we see in the flashbacks.
