So, here’s a list of some of my favorite moments in Smile Time. This is in no way an analysis—I’ll leave the analyzing to everyone else on the board. It’s just some of my favorite little squee moments (of which there are a ton for this episode!). --Okay, the opening teaser—I have major squick issues with this, as I imagine we’re supposed to be wigged by it, I’m sure. I had serious doubts when I first heard about an episode with puppets, and this teaser did nothing to make me feel easier about it. Luckily, I was oh so wrong. --I so love the fact that Wesley is the one who points out that Nina has a crush on Angel. And the insinuation that he’s been talking with the “ladies” about it. I giggle every time I think about Wes gossiping with Harmony. And Wesley is looking extra yummy in this ep, if it’s even possible for him to get more yummy than he already is. #liplick# --“I do not have puppet cancer!” #rofl1# --“You’re a wee little puppet man!!” #rofl2# --The fight scene between Spike and puppetAngel is just frickin’ priceless. And puppetAngel won! ;D --His little puppet walk!! OMG!! ;D --The puppets kind of freak me out. But really, it just solidifies my theory that all puppets are evil. --Nina--“Look Angel, I understand.” Angel mumbles, “Pretty sure you don’t.” ;D --“And my noth cometh off.” Hee, hee! --“No Nina!! Bad Nina!!” “Nina tried to eat me!” “Medic! Doctor!! Is there a Gepetto in the house?!” That walk that Lorne does, carrying puppetAngel with felt hanging out, has to be one of the best moments in television history. --The power shot of Angel leading the Fang Gang down the hall—I don’t know how they kept a straight face during that scene. ;D --“I’m gonna tear you a new puppet hole, bitch!” #rofl1# --When puppetAngel morphs into vamp face, that’s when I completely lost all ability to breathe. --*sigh, swoon* The Fresley kiss. ‘Nuff said. --“Self esteem is for everybody. Self esteem is for everyone. You can dream and be anybody, but self esteem is how you get it done.” Words to live by.

It’s the final week of the Sizzlin’ Angel Episode Festival!!!!And the winner is . . . . (drum roll, please!)
The most requested (by about half of those surveyed) episode!
Smile Time! Fred: Oh, my God! Angel, you're... cute! Oh, but the little hands! And the hair... Angel: Hey! You’re fired. You're a bloody puppet! You're a wee little puppet man!
Angel: And Spike needs a car. Spike: You heard the puppet. My little prince! What did they do to you? Medic! Is there a Geppetto in the house?! Polo: It's Smile Time! Angel: No, it' not...it's time to kick your ass all the way back to hell! Groofus: Hey, man! You're ruinin' the show!
Polo: I'm gonna tear you a new puppet hole, bitch! . . . So, you got a little demon in you. Angel: I got a lot of demon in me. Now, come on!
Looking at the reactions and thoughts and feelings this whole festival has generated, I realised what we are really celebratingl.
Joss.
We get Joss in all his glory here in these episodes. Wittily funny with a depth and meaning in even these “lightest” of episodes that most dramatic shows would kill to be able to pull off when at their most serious. And daring to do what no one else on TV will. Singing and dancing? Actually done by the regular cast? Puppets?! ?! ?!
That’s our Joss. He didn't write every episode (although we have learned that he was often the one putting on the finishing touches) and he certainly didn't direct them all, but we always knew he was the one at the helm of the Buffyverse. So, get out there and appreciate and celebrate these episodes and the man who created the whole Buffyverse! Enjoy Nan’s delightful and delicious and deep Angel’s Investigations review of Smile Time here.
And the original discussion thread of her review is here.[/b][/size]

I know we've all talked about the puppet theme being important to season 5. But I'm not sure I really got how important until I re-watched this last time and really thought about it.
Smile Time is an extremely funny and rather disturbing diversion that Joss gives us right before he sticks the knife in and pushes us over the edge of the rollercoaster that is the final arc of the season. But like all the "purely entertaining" eps, it is of course way more important than we realize. Like OMWF (and read Erin's essay on that to be prompted to think about how important OMWF is!), Smile Time is key to the whole season.
Without the experience of literally being turned into a puppet, would Angel really have been able to understand, deeply, what W&H were doing? It makes him really feel it, not just realize it in his head. It's about as subtle a metaphor as a outright kick in the head.
Yes, we got the funny because that is classic Joss - give them an emotional respite before you put the screws back on. But we also got it because the events themselves are important! And not just the foreshadowing, like Gunn's brain problems or Angel and Nina or Wes and Fred. The puppet thing itself is really the key element. Hiding in plain sight.

This and everyone's love of the funny. When you first posted the two #1 choices, I, too, thought how very similar they were. Both funny and seemingly light-hearted (dancing!singing!puppets!), but hiding a darker theme (loss of self/purpose, sense of failure, feeling alone). "Smile Time" is like a mini-Season 6. Complete with the happy endings of Angel going off to find out what 'puppets eat' to the destruction of the soul-sucking machine, (W&H in Season 6), to Wesley and Fred's happy ending. Angel!Puppet had to get torn up and eaten to realize his potential - embrace his demon. Hmmm. I wonder if Angel had to get eaten by that dragon in the alley in order to heal. Gosh, I miss this show. Thank you so much for this awesome festival, Lola! I wish I would've been able to participate more, but I loved reading everyone's thoughts and reactions to the awesome S'cubie choices.

Awww, thanks for the flowers, Karen! I know what you mean, I haven't participated as much as I originally wanted (RL conspiring to be too busy) but I figure, the threads will be here. In the future, I can always come back and comment as ideas come to mind. Also, eetah on noticing the way both 1st eps have that "funny, yep, seriously funny" thing going for them. **nods nods nods along**
