It’s the sixth week of the 2006 Sizzlin’ Episode Festival and we’ve got the 5th most requested Angel episode selected by you, our s’cubie home viewing audience!!
Waiting in the Wings!
Fred: I'm very excited about tonight. I love the ballet! I mean, I haven't seen that much, but my family used to go to the Nutcracker every Christmas, and I had my first sexual dream about the Mouseking.
Lorne: Can't fight Kyrumption, cinnamon buns. It's fate. It's the stars. Kyrumption is... Angel: Stop saying that. And stop calling me pastries. Lorne: You're a man of many limitations, Angel. But you're a man. You got a heart. And Cordelia is a hell of a lady. I mean, if I thought she'd like to wear green, I'd be elbowing you out of the way. But she's out of my league. She's a champion, Angel, old school. And besides, we all know you got a thing for ex-cheerleaders.
Angel: So, somebody wanna tell me how we're watching a show starring people who should have died sixty years ago? Cordelia: Well, it's a puzzler. Are there snacks?
Cordelia: I want you - to undress me. Angel: You what? Cordelia: It's just another costume. I want you to see who I really am. You're the only one who can. Angel: I... - This isn't us. Cordelia, we're acting this out. Someone is...
Cordelia: All we have to do is play the scene. Get in, get out. No one gets happy. Angel: What if there is - no more talking in that scene? - Look, I've been possessed by the spirits of old lovers before. Never goes well. Cordelia: Well, I've got my little cross if things get out of hand. Hey - it's awkward, but it's not *us.* So long as nothing is removed or - inserted... it's all forgotten. Angel: It is us - Cordelia. It's you and me. - Kissing you, it's... - It's not something I can just... Cordelia: Oh, come on. It's not *that* horrible. Up to his ass in demon gore - fine! But ask him to mack on a hottie and he wigs. My champion, ladies and gentlemen.
Gunn: Hey. You really that worried about me? Fred: You probably think I'm an idiot. Gunn: I think if you care that much - the wound is definitely deep. Fred: The light is dimming? Gunn: And all I ask is one last...
Wes: You two - (said to Fred and Gunn) - stay close together. I'll take point. Cordelia: I hope you're in a killing mood. Wes: I should do alright.
Ballerina: It really doesn't matter. I'll dance. I'll wait here. And then I'll dance again. That's all. Angel: A hundred years - doing the same piece - every night. Is that enough?
Angel: You dance. Ballerina: It isn't just the same ballet. It's the same performance. I don't dance. I echo. Please - can you make it stop?
Fred: That's a surprise. I thought for sure she was meant to be with Angel. I guess you never can predict those things, you know. Wes: No. I guess you never can.
Here’s the place, now’s the time! Discuss, swoon, babble, post pics, squee, quote funny lines, think deep, think shallow. Let’s celebrate that ep!!
Don’t have your DVD or tape handy? Here’s a link to the dialogue.

Summer Glau. So wonderful and perfect as the ballerina frozen in time. I think it's positively haunting when she says "I don't dance. I echo."
And what a metaphor for Angel to pay attention to!!!!!

And now that I've watched Dr Who, I'm thinking of "dance" as a metaphor. Which gives an interesting spin to that metaphor as well...

And it's not like we don't have that metaphor in the Jossverse already. And not only in this episode's Angel&Cordy dance of "will they, won't they" and the awkward Wes&Fred&Gunn threeway shuffling for position. We have: "I could have danced all night with that one." and "Come on. I can feel it, Slayer. You know you want to dance."

Summer Glau. So wonderful and perfect as the ballerina frozen in time. I think it's positively haunting when she says "I don't dance. I echo." And what a metaphor for Angel to pay attention to!!!!!And Wesley, too! Actually, it was something that they all needed to pay attention to - to seize the moment. How heartbreaking it was that Wesley and Angel both were a hair too late. So much funny mixed in with the angst in a perfect episode. Those scenes between Cordy and Angel just so hilarious - when Angel took off his jacket to cover the 'affects' of the spell. LOL!! I loved the continuity in Angel's reference to the Buffy ep - I Only Have Eyes for You. His comment that even though they were possessed, it *was* them, had me going 'hmmmmm'. Gives us a different perspective and shows us that Angelus was really affected by that haunting. And no wonder Joss was enchanted with Summer. Those ballerina feet! She really did a wonderful job. I loved how she danced throughout the episode while the gang were pulled into the magic. How icky were those laughing masked replicating ghouls! *shudders* Joss loves to bring on the scary with a smile on its face. I think it may be my new favorite Angel ep.

Eetah on the funny mixed with the angst. I sometimes forget just how well Joss does this. I notice that I tend to think of an ep I really love and in my mind, I'm like "oh that's a good funny one" - or "that's an action-y one". And I'm right, but I have forgotten how well mixed it all is. Ones I recently watched that make me think of this include this ep, but also Selfless and Spin the Bottle. Sooooo much going on in each of those eps - and I tend to forget that until I re-watch.

Subsequent roles have complicated watching this. I kept on being distracted by (a) her not grabbing an axe and going River on the bad guy and (b) the idea that under all that there's a Terminator doing ballet. Seriously, distracting. Add to that the way ballet is just one of those symbol systems I cannot read, and... don't think I read this one quite as intended.

I love the sword fighty bits.
I actually love that Wes didn't get the girl. Because he'd not tried talking to the girl or asking her out or going places with her or, you know, being a grown up about it. He was being a fanboy about it, like the ballet watching dude; hence the matching hotspot.
I love watching Gunn get really into the ballet. On the one hand it's funny, because such a turn around, and mismatch of pop culture wording about high culture. On the other hand having discovered what the point of theatre was from one performance that really reached me I could feel it so much. Sometimes it just clicks, and you get it.
And then he's got actual stuff in common with Fred. Instead of just watching her.
the idea of performers being trapped in an echo by their fan who thinks they own them... note to self: don't be that fan.
Episode was very pretty. Very.
And then layered up with so much going on, and a proper supernatural fighty plot and the relationship plot all together.
Oh, and must not forget: Lorne singing lullabies.
(Lorne places Connor into the crib in Angel's room singing softly.)
LORNE: (singing) Go to sleep, lullaby, you've been fed and you're sleepy. You'll be with uncle Lorne, who in no way resents not being asked to go to the ballet. And is certainly, not thinking, of selling you to the first vampire cult that makes him a decent offer...
