Fiery passion. Lust. Love. Angst. Pain. Ecstasy, despair, sexual abandon, and jealous seething! Yes, we’ve obviously entered the ninth week of the 2006 Sizzlin’ Episode Festival.
And what is the 2nd most requested Angel episode? Darla, of course! And this is the thread to discuss it.
Darla: Angelus. You should have seen us together. Lindsey: He was a different person then. Darla: And so was I. Now do you know what we've become? Lindsey: Enemies. Darla: Oh no. Much worse. Now we're soulmates. The Master: (to Darla) I'm your savior. God never did anything for you. But I will. Angelus: You belong by my side, out in the world. Feeding as we like, taking what we need. I'll give you that view you crave, darling. I'll give you everything. Tell the truth. Whose face do you want to look at for eternity? His... or mine? I didn't even know her real name. What did you bring back, Lindsey? What am I? Did you bring back that girl, whose name I can't remember? Or did you bring back something else? The other thing. It's been four centuries since I've had to be afraid of anything. And now I'm sick with it. . . . Help me! Angel: I know, Wesley, I could be walking into a trap. I get that. Wesley: I'm not convinced you do. Darla: I released you from this world once, I gave you eternal life. Now it's time for you to return the favor. Angel: Favor? Is that what you think? You think you did me a favor. You damned me. Darla Fine. Fine then, if it's such a punishment, take out your revenge, pay me back! Please. Angel: I can't.

No one has commented? Inconceivable!
This is such an extraordinary episode, and sets so much in motion, not just for the season, but for the entire show. And I just adore how it plays against "Fool For Love." I remember feeling very confused by Angel's behavior during the Boxer rebellion, thinking "What the hell is he doing with Spike and Dru and Darla? He's got a soul!" Darla offered the same event from Angel's perspective, and it was just amazing to watch.
Plus the slo-mo power shot, twice, just rocked my world.
Come on, people! Talk!

I love watching this "back to back" with Fool for Love. Heck, I'd love one that showed these same events from Dru's perspective. Although that would likely be rather . . . surreal. I love the slo mo power walk and leap. ;D And I curse everytime I see it on FX, 'cuz they usually edit it shorter. **shakes tiny fist at FX** Darla is very interesting to see how it shapes, as you say, the whole show. For example, if Darla had not had her time as a human again, feeling the effects of her soul, thinking about her time as a vamp, would she have been slightly less likely to sacrific herself for Connor in the next season?

Lola, it's a great coincidence that you mention the "Fool For Love"/"Darla" crossover. I've been wanting to comment on "Darla" all week but have been way, way too tied up. And what I've been putting off saying in a way twists that thought around. I had always thought of FFL/D as an entity. At the beginning of the summer I treated myself to the AtS Season 2 DVDs and began a viewing marathon. When watched within the Season 2 arc, "Darla" struck me completely differently than when viewed as just a continuation of "Fool For Love". As just the finish to the crossover, I was always so focused on Spike in the Shanghai scenes that I would give less than due attention to Darla & Angel. I'm very glad I got the opportunity to view "Darla" and the whole marvelous Darla arc from this new perspective. I really love theDarla-heavy Season 2. It really moved Ats away from BtVS.

Or, perhaps it would be better to say, the way Spike lets himself / others see it. I loved season 2 of Angel muchly. The whole story arc of Darla and Dru and Angel, him going almost Angelus-y and letting the lawyers get eaten and then the elevator ride and epiphany and all. Just a really amazing arc. One of my faves in the Angelverse, really.

The whole story arc of Darla and Dru and Angel, him going almost Angelus-y and letting the lawyers get eaten and then the elevator ride and epiphany and all. Just a really amazing arc. One of my faves in the Angelverse, really. Mine, too. Watching Season 2 is necessary in order to understand where Angel is coming from. Things I noticed after rewatching last night. Darla (we never do know what her real name is) in the flashback pre-being turned, was getting bled in an attemp to save her. Then the Master bled her and turned her. She was a shell before she was turned and was filled with the demon upon being turned. There wasn't much of a human left of her and when she turned, she completely embraced her new unlife. Spike was certainly the unknown and unexpected factor in Angel's life. He killed the gypsy family before Darla could use them to 'save' Angelus. He also killed a slayer and in doing so inadvertantly caused Darla to finally call Angel's bluff. I snicker every time Drusilla calls Darla 'grandmother'. LOL! Foreshadowing of Angel's time after getting his soul: DARLA: *The* Master. He commands our order.MASTER: The order of Aurelius. We are the select, the elite.
ANGELUS: And you live in the sewers, do you?
MASTER: We live below, giving tribute to the old ones. Awaiting that promised day when we will arise. Arise! And lay *waste* to the world above.
ANGELUS: Why'd you want to do that?
MASTER: Huh?
ANGELUS: Well, I mean, have you *been* above lately? It's quite nice. Me, I could never live in a rat-infested stink hole like this. Pardon me for saying so. But I gotta have meself a proper bed or I'm a terror. (To Darla) Isn't that right, love?
DARLA: (nervously to the Master) He's young. Poor Angel. That's exactly where he ends up for a time, until Whistler and Buffy come into his life.\\ Loved all the Lindsey parts - especially: (Lindsey kisses her)
DARLA: Mmm, that's how humans get what *they* want. I remember that much.
(Lindsey kisses her again.)
LINDSEY: Do you like it?
DARLA: It's nice. But it's not me you want to screw.
LINDSEY: What?
DARLA: It's him. You all think you can use me to get to Angel.
LINDSEY: Maybe.
(He kisses her hard) Slashy much? And then Darla biting Lindsey when he says "I don't care." to her query "What am I?" I felt so sad for Darla - being used again. And what exactly was she? Not a vampire, but not quite a human. She has no memory of 'hell'. Her plea for Angel to turn her was just heartbreaking. Did she come back from the dead with no soul, even though she was human? Love the episode so much. It's a Tim Minear ep and I love his writing! All parties did a great job and I have a special love for the flashback episodes. Here we see Joss's love for the Chinese culture. Made me think how he incorporated it more completely in "Firefly". Ok, I'm done babbling.
