I like Xander as Mr. Perspective guy. He's the anchor when everybody else is wildly flying around in their own little tizzy

Your story illustrates how BTVS provides a more profound and realistic portrayal of real life than anything else television has produced.
Great art is a mirror. The beauty of the Jossverse is in it's flexibility: anyone can find someone or something they can identify with. When good things happen to these characters they've earned it. Nothing comes easy...just like life.
Thank you for helping me understand Buffy's behavior in Season 6. I still find her mental state a little disturbing (see Conversations With Dead People), but hopefully she'll understand that she's only superior in a physical sense. At the end of the day sheer strength only takes you so far in this world...and Joss's.
I watched the beautiful agony that was Becoming Part 2 on FX a few hours ago. I cringe when I hear the dialogue hammering it home that she has no one but herself. To this day, Angelus's words about having no friends left haunt her.
At this stage I can only hope she finally sees the facts: she has been chosen to fight evil and was given natural gifts to do so. Her friends made the choice on their own. The courage Willow and Xander have shown since Day One (even before Willow's power supassed Buffy's) puts the three of them on an equal footing as far as I'm concerned. I don't see how she can feel superior to people who have brought her back from death more than once. It's beyond me. What's it going to take? Oh, she gives teamwork some nice lip service, but we know she doesn't entirely believe herself.
She's the greatest of all Slayers because she's not alone....Spike pretty much told her that straight out in Fool For Love. Tonight was a good start, showing respect for Spike that he earned with the huge sacrifice he made. Maybe she's starting to see the light.

You know, potential energy is a fine thing, but this episode was definitely lacking in the kinetic - particularly between Buffy & Spike. I'm sure the title of the episode referred to them as well as the Potential Slayers.
It was an episode about character development and exposition, and little else. On that level it was disappointing, because we have so few shows left, I'd like to see things moving along.
I did like the Buffy/Spike moments, especially when she hiked up his shirt to run her hand up his torso while she was straddling him. It was strictly clinical interest, and sisterly concern, of course. I know this, because it is all over between them, as Buffy definitely tells Amanda later on. It is sooooo over.
I noticed Buffy & Spike passed that flashlight again, in that crypt where they were talking about his comfy former crypt. Good God in Heaven. I would like to hear one of the Potential Slayers just let it all out and yell "Get a room already!!"
Where is Spike sleeping? He'd better lock that door.
ROB: I don't expect a happy ending for Buffy & Spike, I'm sure we'll only get thrown some scraps, though I expect some tasty ones. But - sorry buddy - my guess is that it is more than B/X shippers will ever get to chew on. Speaking of which - wonderful Xander moment at the end of this episode! Well done by MT & NB.

In the past, his perspectives have been tainted by his jealousy, for better and for worse. He has one hurdle left to jump, and that's a complete acceptance of Spike. As I've said many times before here, I strongly hope the writers allow them to give each other a break.
Without getting spoilery, I think some stuff may come up that will provide us with an answer pretty soon. I'm telling you right now: if Xander gives Spike credit and supports him in front of the group it'll be a huge leap forward for both of them, and I just might cry with joy (while making sure no one is looking, of course).

ellie says: "By the way can I apply for the position of snarky grad student still trying to finish her paper on some indefinable Spike topic whose direction shifts every time the wind blows?"
RUSTY, I'd like to second this nomination. Every self respecting academic department needs a snarky grad student as described!

What is faculty without students? You're accepted into the program. However, as the only current student your tuition will be rather high. We keep adding faculty and the government is talking about cutting back on our research contracts. Some complaint or another about study subjects eating the lab assistants.

What about a hardship scholarship? I mean I really should qualify for combat pay since not all of the subjects I purssue will be snuggle bunnies.
I mean I could always offer to capture Harmony for our more intensive research into vampire physiogomy. Thats it I have my research topic and my menas of support.
Hieratic shifts in the modality of relationships as exemplified in the empiric differences in vampiric lust. (I have no idea what that means but I wager neither do any of our major contributors( and since their only purpose is to find a way to safely approach Spike) I think I should qualify for a major grant.
Plus which who else is going to dress in a long black leather coat and go to the local butcher shop for gallons of pig blood?

We can make her do verticle bar graphs!
Water Gal has also applied for the Chair of Nosferoengineering.I think that has something to do with structural integrity. Since VHISN has neither I think she's be an appropriate addition.

Well, like Xander with Spike, I've got a long memory, too. ;-) Seriously, I really did enjoy his last scene with Dawn, plus there've been other touching and funny moments I can think of throughout the series where I liked him and/or what he did.
Then just when I think I'm on his side for good, he goes all mean on Spike (or Angel before him) and I'm back to not so liking the Xandman. Plus he SOOO should have told Anya earlier about not being ready to get married; I've been in that situation before, and at the altar (or even worse, AFTER the ceremony) is NOT the place to find that out. There was a girl who DID love him loyally and totally; who hung the moon on him, as it were.
But y'know, Xander and Spike both have things in common with how they've related to the Summers' women: loyalty to them all, "big brothers-once-crush-objects" to Dawn, unrequited (romantic) love for Buffy, seeing Joyce as a mother figure neither had in their lives at the time - just to name a few. And I like that.
I've also said this before, that I never expect Xander & Spike to be best friends, if EVEN friends. But I've compared them at best to Spock & McCoy, and if they'd stay that way, that'd be plenty good enough for me (as well as entertaining as hell).

I'm afraid there's good news and bad news. Not about admission. Your thesis title alone is enough to get you in. However, the required school uniform already happens to be long black leather coats and Doc Martens for all faculty, grad students and sport teams.Luckily you already have one.You may wear anything you like under it, or not. (We're very popular at the butchers).

(This is an historic post.)
We have been observing with great interest the formation of the VHISN. It pains us to admit that, alas, we do not meet all the qualifications to a level in which you would be satisfied. Nevertheless we greatly admire your thirst for knowledge in this worthy area of study.
This presented us with a conundrum--not just any humdrum conundrum, either. After long reflection it has been decided that on behalf of the Zeppo Foundation we extend an olive branch by providing a year's supply of Wheetabix for the cafeteria. We hope this provides the necessary texture to keep you awake on those challenging nocturnal field trips. Please accept this as a token of goodwill and friendship. We wish the faculty well and look forward to further communication.
Respectfully Yours, Rob Sorenson, Xander Harris and Buffy Summers-Harris.
DALTON'S NOTE...STILL ROB'S FINEST MOMENT...EVER

As President of VHISN I would like to personally thank the Zeppo Foundation for its generous contribution. We gratefully accept anything that helps us keep our energy up for pursuing the knowledge. And as Spike knows, you can never have enough Wheatabix
