deborah: Yes I'm talking about James' new Ghost of the Robot CD. Rusty mentioned that there were several songs about a painful break-up(s?), and I had heard the same thing. I have avoided buying it, and until Rusty said that, I hadn't really thought about why. But then I realized I have an actual feeling of aversion.

I listened to tracks from their CD. They're a little rough for this old girl.
Something raw in their sound reminds me of old Stones stuff, but it's way more emotional than the Stones ever were. Stones always struck me as avoiding or hiding emotions. GOTR seems to revel, or maybe wallow, in them.

Thank you Miss P'! You made my morning and had me laughing out loud at my desk.
Every time Riley makes an appearence my auto reaction is to stick out my tongue and go "Bleahhhh". You captured my sentiments exactly.

Don't they have two CDS out now? Are they available in retail stores? I listened to some snippets of their songs on the WEB and they were not really to my taste. An interview I read with one of the band members described JM's musical taste, as far as what he played on his own before the band, as running more towards singer songwriter stuff rather than the loud and raw rock and roll. I wish I could hear that side of JM.
Of course I am still excited about seeing his band this Spring. In the same interview that I mentioned it said that in the beginning their audience was all Buffy fans but more recently they've been attracting people who are coming for the music rather than just for James. He said that they'll get middle aged ladies there to see James in the front rows and then young men and women there for the music in the back. I thought Hey! Why would James' fan base be dominated by middle aged ladies? Just because I'm one and some of my fellow S'Cubies may be it never occurred to me that ladies of all ages succumbed came under his spell.
Comments?

Boy I really garbled my last sentance on the preceeding post.
What I typed:
Just because I'm one and some of my fellow S'Cubies may be it never occurred to me that ladies of all ages succumbed came under his spell.
What I meant to say:
Just because I'm one and some of my fellow S'Cubies may be it never occurred to me that ladies of all ages didn't succumb to his spell.

Does anybody besides me LIKE Riley? I mean, consider, he's the only one of Buffy's (serious) boyfriends who didn't hit her, try to kill her or torture her. I know we're all Spike fans here (except Robert, maybe) and I ship with the rest of you, but I like Riley. He's cute, occasionally witty, loyal, loving and sweet and he gave Buffy some of the best sex she'd had to date.
This is NOT Bleahh. Parker's Bleahh! Riley's more of a MMMmmmmnneeaahh.

Thanks, Deborah - what I'd REALLY like to do (and I think I can at my website if I ever get it going again) is make it to where when you pass your mouse over that picture, you'd hear the sound of "Blee-eeaa-aaghh!" a'la Buffy when she's cagin' Spike's whiskey before and during the great "kitten poker" session in "Life Serial". ;-)

There are at least five Spike related topics that have been recently added to the Misc Board rather than posted under SSS. What if whenever one of us notices an independently posted Spike comment or question he/she responds saying that their question/comment is perfect for our (board/topic?) and to maximize their feedback we have taken the liberty of copying their post under SSS? Then say something about how we are not an exclusive club but an open arena for all Spike/Buffy related discussion, please check there for addtional responses and come post with us. Alexandra, maybe you could come up with some decent verbage? I was thinking maybe this would be a way to herd in all the stray Spike posters who keep hovering outside our Spikecentric group.

I read that interview too and was rather shocked, because I thought James Marsters appealed to all ages of female (won't go there with the gay attraction element). Then I started thinking, the other band members are all in their early twenties, if that. To them, a middle aged lady is probably 30. As I remember, the band member said the middle aged ladies were all holding pictures of James and the younger people were there to hear the music. I think perhaps the band's publicist is either very young also, or a very bad publicist to let that comment get out onto the web.

Perhaps you're not the only one, Diane, but hey - nobody's perfect. ;-) lol
Seriously, I don't know exactly why I feel "bleagh!" around Riley; to me, Parker is simply a non-entity: persona non grata exemplified (and a stupid kid). I think I just suffer from that "bad-boy-gone-mostly-good-who-can-still-be-'bad'-in-a-good-way" fixation. Yeah, Riley was overall a good person, but there's just something to me about a guy who's BEEN to the bad side; call it depth or experience - sometimes their having been so bad has taught them more about being good and make them appreciate the good things more.
And I can't really argue with your "best sex" point because you put the qualifier "to date" on it. Yeah - AFTER Riley, FUHGEDDABOUDIT - NO CONTEST.

Diane said, "Does anybody besides me LIKE Riley?"
I started watching Buffy mid-sixth season so it was Spike all the way, no Riley in sight. When I went back and started watching the fourth season, my main reaction was, "Buffy, why are you wasting your time on this nonentity?"
Riley was just too nice, too vanilla, too earnest, and just ho-hum. Spike called him Captain Cardboard and that's a good name for the character. I think that character was deliberately held back from giving any snarky vibes off, because then we might have liked him more. I don't remember him even leering at Buffy when they were going to hit the sheets. I'm sure Marc Blucas is capable of much more than the very tight range of emotions he was allowed to portray as Riley, but that character was there for us to be happy to lose, to make way for Spike. As an audience, I figure most of us reacted just the way Joss wanted us to feel toward Riley. Indifference mixed with impatience, and a vague feeling of ewwww.

Never felt the Eww factor. Not after Parker. An occasional ooo but no ew. Specially the one ep when they couldn't get out of bed. Buffy did NOT look unsatisfied.
And Riley's pretty. Too.
I still like Spike better. He's just more fun.

I recall hearing James say on Craig Kilborn that there was an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old in the band, and how excited they were to be in Paris to do a concert (not that HE would likely act dull and blase - what a little dynamo he is!). So that might indeed account for the "young ones" who go to see the band.
However, with JM looking and acting as young as he does (not immature, just youthful), I'd be quite surprised if some of the "young" women who come to GOTR concerts "just to hear the band" (a) REALLY come "just" for that reason and (b) if they DID come "just" for that reason, don't then come away with a new appreciation for and attraction to James himself. Then they can join the wiser "middle-aged ladies" who admit coming JUST to see James. Yeah, I wonder about that publicist...

I've been meaning to say something about this since Tues but kept forgetting. It's about Spike's response to Buffy's suggestion that he try dating too in that scene where they meet in the upstairs hallway. Spike says something about how some girls really go for look, the bad-boy image does it for them (can't remember the exact line).
While his comment is obviously in character and appropriate to their conversation I can't help but wonder if ME wasn't taking a playful jab at all of us.
