skimming more. here's the scene both where lianne's alcoholism is implied & where veronica says when lianne left: Thanks, artemis! That fills in some of the blanks. We still don't know what circumstances brought Duncan and Veronica together or why he iced her before Lilly's death. Lianne was obviously crushed by all the negative publicity. Or, maybe she was paid to disappear.

Lianne stored them in the safety deposit box shortly before she left town. Wow, lots and lots of lose ends to tie up.

well, looking at the pilot's flashbacks with the information we know now, it seems part of why lianne left might have been her and keith's differences over jake. i found this line of keith's particularly interesting with what we now know: "The man is a liar, nothing changes." that one argument of theirs (that this line is from) makes it sound like there was a lot more going on with them than what veronica thought--and that veronica's explicitly-stated reason for her mom's leaving, in the pilot, wasn't anywhere near the whole story. her belief as stated last episode that her parents will get back together when her mom finishes rehab seems to belie her continued oversimplification of the situation. do you think keith found out about the hotel rendezvous (perhaps even misinterpreting it as an affair) on the day of lily's death and that was part of why he went so doggedly after jake? that was one thing i was wondering as i reread the pilot script.

I had a similar thought. That his pursuit of Jake at least was somewhat motivated by the past of Jake and Lianne and somewhat by a fear or belief that somethin was going on between them now. I don't believe that Keith is the kind of guy (or was the kind of sheriff) that would base his investigations solely on that - but I think it was a factor.

If I manage to stave off senility a few extra years, all the credit will go to the S'cubies and VM! And don't think I didn't notice that first season comment.

The episode review link just randomly loaded up on the web page this morning after trying the 'refresh' button for days. Strange. Anyway thanks Spring for the direct link so I could read it before the new episode.
And Sue, your review was excellent. Really a great read. I especially like the list of themes in this episode that could contribute to the Lilly Kane case. It helps alot in trying to figure out a theory of who did it. Not like I have found one I can stick with completely for more than a day or so, but still...
Oh, and thanks to everyone for your warm welcome! I'm happy to get to join in on the discussion for the next episode, once time permits.

Hey, that was a great review, Sue. I especially agree with your comments about the superb non-verbal acting going on. On rewatching the old eps, I always make an effort to watch Veronica or Logan when someone else is the focus of the scene. They're always doing something interesting or revealing that I never noticed the first time.
One nitpick. I think the stoner is named Corny, not Courtney.
That was revealed in the "I Never" game seen in the high school prom/limo party flashback in The Wrath of Con. Lilly: "I have never not had sex." Veronica (and Duncan) drink.

Good advice on the watching "away from the ball" (as my husband tells me I must learn to do in basketball). And you are probably correct on the kid's name. I just tried to interpolate what a heard into some "known" name, but I think you've got it correct. Altho that was not so egregious an error as hearing, "we're burning daylight" and "we're bringing daylight." Clearly time to get the old hearing checked. Finally, regarding the quote: The scene you reference occurred well before Lilly's death or Veronica's rape. I think (and clearly my memory may be faulty) the comment you quoted was part of a discussion about Logan's comment in the pool house about Veronica being a virgin. Yes--as you point out--he did have the information from the night of the homecoming dance. What posters were debating was whether he might be aware (due to some type of involvement) of Veronica's rape and therefore actually be privy to information that she is no longer (technically) a virgin.

Sue - I'm so late in coming to say this but I really did mean to comment when I read your review. I enjoyed it thoroughly and I agree with you on all the non-verbal acting going on. I went back and rewatched a lot of this episode with no sound and it's amazing how powerful it remained.
