I quote...'He had," thought Great-Heart, "a Slough of Despair in his mind, a Slough that he carry'd every where with him…"'(Pilgrim's Progress) Although, it is mmostly called Slough of Despond. So, not Jossed.

I'm moving us forward now because by the time I return from work (Pacific time) this Part would be well over 500 posts. So, a new chalkboard for everyone. Don't drop it in the water. I'm fresh out of canes.

//He's said too much to quote here, but I refer you to this website, a great source of JM interviews and other goodies. www.secretloft.com/lostsoul/enter.htm // Thanks Pattie. Just returned from reading all those articles. I love his insights and some of the things he says were just cracking me up. He was up here in Seattle the end of March for one of those conventions with others shows. I was planning on going, but couldn't make it in the end. Hope I get the chance to go again. Betsy Lusby

Others (Patti & David, I think) said: //Spike said Dracula just had a lot of cheap gypsy tricks. I loved that explanation. // I'm sure that's very much the case, at least regarding Drac's ability to do magic and fly and stuff. But it doesn't account for why Dracula fed without going into game face, the way all the other vampires do (not including the Turok-Han). Of course, this might also have been Joss' way of not countering the popular Dracula mythology that Dracula became a vampire when he sold his soul to the devil. According to Welcome to the Hellmouth, the first vampire was created when the last demon fed on a human and mingled their blood, and then that human-demon-hybrid fed, etc. Dracula has a different mythology, and by having there be subtle differences between him and the other vampires, ME left a door open for both mythologies to co-exist. Mary replies: I wondered about this too - Drac's place in the Buffyverse. My own mind figured it as Drac was very, very old, and was able to control his demon in ways younger vamps could not - hence no game face. This contradicts characters like The Master however, so my mind played with that as well and decided that different vamps may have different powers, etc. Just like people have different skills and characteristics. My daughter was a gymnast and can do things that make me gasp (literally). I have a human body, too, and I've never been able to do those things. That's not to say my body is incapable of doing them (though, believe me, it is NOT capable!), but I never took the time to develop the skills. Because we HAVE seen different kinds of vampires in the Buffyverse, we probably need to be rather fluid in our understanding of them. Maybe there really aren't a lot of hard and fast rules.
