Okay, this was incredibly gruesome and creepifying after last week's sort of "filler" episode. Gwen gets the Silence of the Lambs scene with the people-eater, although it's Ianto and Tosh who are the ones who nearly get scoffed.
Jack continues to disturb me with his "mission first" actions, leaving Gwen shot and bleeding on the ground while he pursues the shooter.
Gwen and Owen continue to strike incendiary "Holy crap, this is on TELEVISION" sparks, but at least now we get to understand a bit of what's behind Gwen's attraction. I wonder how long it will last, though, and how many people will be hurt before it's resolved, since said sparks are flying everywhere.
Interesting that Ianto remembered HIS "last snog" as being Lisa, not Jack, and Jack didn't correct him...or even engage in the discussion. And Tosh gets a bit more character development this week, although not as much of a push forward as Ianto's got last week, with the "didn't take you long to get your feet under the table" comment.
And was anybody else left with a "WTF?" feeling after it seemed that Ianto had been doppleganged by one of the people-eaters? Or did I miss something?

gruesome is right. also icky, creepy, nasty, and very very very... hmmm, not turning away? If you ever wanted to not see something you had to close your eyes, you couldn't rely on the camera staying away from it. Or did I miss something? don't know what you mean, so one of us missed something. not going to rewatch this one ever ever ever though. I don't like Silence of the Lambs. I nearly failed Cultural Studies because I didn't want to rewatch creepy serial killer movies. I hang out in F&SF for a *reason*, and that reason is the comfortable layer of metaphor between me and badness. It is not a 'twist' to have it just be humans. Every other genre on TV has it just be humans. Every other genre on TV hasn't even got the not-humans option. So I say humans should stay in every other genre, and Torchwood should stick to the aliens etc. All the message boards I was reading were like 'woah! original twist!' and I'm like "and you live in what world?" Because not original. Just what everything else does. Also, scary. I was sitting around with my sword out for hours after watching this one. Felt like they'd cheated. Disagree that last week was filler though. It was Jack backstory, making it more central to what most people wanted out this series before it started.

If you ever wanted to not see something you had to close your eyes, you couldn't rely on the camera staying away from it. don't know what you mean, so one of us missed something. not going to rewatch this one ever ever ever though. There was a scene where Tosh was whipping her gun around and Ianto appeared, holding his hands out to his sides so that she wouldn't shoot him. And then Ianto was elsewhere and Tosh was gone. Considering that it WASN'T aliens after all, maybe I DID miss something. Like you, I'm not really keen on re-watching it to find out. Huh. That feels just about right for me as well. Maybe they thought it was a "twist" because, like I was thinking most of the way through, it's Torchwood, it's SUPPOSED TO BE FREAKING ALIENS!!! I'm sorry it freaked you so badly, be. Oh, I was all happy about the backstory as well! But I wanted more because of the teensy bit they gave us, so most of what else happened in the story partly annoyed me because I found myself thinking "More Jackstory, more Jackstory! What's this nonsense with the fairies!?" ;D Hence the bitchy "filler" comment, I think.

I'm sorry it freaked you so badly, be. By now I'm less freaked and more, you know, sulking. It did make me think seriously about starting to collect spoilers, or waiting for the Wednesday showing and reading everyone's first reactions. But I think they'll keep it a one off trick. Probably.

Okay. I watched. And, it was as gruesome and creepy as you warned me. I was so hoping they were aliens. Human beings doing this to other human beings. Ewwwwwwwwww. Nothing scares me as much as homicidal sociopaths.
All I could think was "don't split up, don't split up". And, what was with that frakked up scene in the woods? Why on earth did they just give up their guns?
I must admit that I was experiencing visceral joy when Jack bulldozed in and wounded the loonies so they were out of the picture. Man. I do not plan on watching that one again any time soon.

Whoa. I'm totally with Gwen (and apparently all of you) in the episode making me feel shaky and kind of sick. And a little surprised about Gwen and Owen...not sure quite how I feel about Owen yet; there are some, if not sociopathic, at least seriously questionable qualities about him.
Have to process this one a little more...

Whoa.
I find Owen to be a creepy little weasel.
But I'll take him as a neighbor anytime over the Camden cannibals, laying in their decade's supply of... whatever.
I was hoping to god it was aliens, too.
CREEPY damned episode.

Camping!
No other race in the universe goes camping. Celebrate your uniqueness. Hee.
This is gorgeous scenery.
Last kisses.
Gwen and Owen. Let the sexing up begin! Or not. Damn.
Haunted inn story.
Collecting flesh and organs to feed on.
The rift is spreading.
These random folk are the creatures, I'm guessing.
Maybe not, just collaborators?
Every 10 years, there's a harvest.
Jack is an experienced torturer.
OK, the random people are the creatures. I was right the first time.
We're all just meat.
All the villagers are the creatures. Or just cannibals, I guess.
Gwen becomes more Torchwood and pulls away from the outside world.
And is it over with her boyfriend or is she cheating on him?

Is it some sort of prerequisite that every show with a supernatural/horror element has to have an episode about creepy country cannibals?

Whoa. Scary ep. Scary scary ep. And of course it turned out to be humans in a sort of Lottery-esque village. **shivers** I was getting that vibe and so I knew the police guy that they ran into was going to turn out to be in on it. Even before he said he was taking them to the town hall thing. And the scary ep nicely fit the other main thing we were supposed to see, which is how isolated the team is. No one they can talk to except each other. Which also seems to mean no one to have sex with but each other too. Poor Tosh! Why isn't she getting the love, eh? Plus, I noticed that really the only who dodged the "who was the last person you snogged" question was Jack. Well, and Gwen, who started the whole thing. Did I mention the ep was scary? 'Cuz, eeeeeeeee, it was scary.

And yet when he burst into the room to save them all, he doesn't kill all the baddies, he kneecaps them. Which surprised me, frankly. **nods** Yup. I wonder if Ianto doesn't really remember the kiss, since it was a "kiss of life" thingee and he was unconscious/dying/dead when it started and all. I am not sure I know the moment you refer to.

If you ever wanted to not see something you had to close your eyes, you couldn't rely on the camera staying away from it. Yes. Very eepsome. Not one I will watch over and over, that's for sure. One to be probably avoided. Well, or maybe just watch the bits with the team together and leave the rest. **shivers** Okay, this was incredibly gruesome and creepifying after last week's sort of "filler" episode. I like my scary to be, well, not really possible. Oh, yes. None of the eps have been completely filler, really. All are building a picture of all the TW gang.
