I will say the Minnesota - Tampa Bay game today was . . . more exciting than I would have thought, going into it.

well it seems as though the Yanks are back playing well, they've won 7 on the bounce and are only 1 away from .500 Come on, we all knew it was going to happen sometime, they couldn't be poor for the whole season. Cubbies have turned things around slightly, now only 3 games away from .500 and Maddux is on the mound today with first pitch taking place in roughly 15 mins. Hopefully we can pick up some momentum and start winning games because we have the White Sox, BoSox and the Yankees all to come soon Dev

How about those Yankees huh? ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D United in Yankee hatred! . Where I come from, the word "Yankee" is always proceeded by "Damn". So when I hear network cheering over the expletive deleted Yankees, I want to scream. I just found this thread. My home team is not doing so well these days so I've been cooling my baseball obsession. ("Rebuiliding is Hell" or so they say.) It'll be nice to know where to go over the summer before the new season starts airing for baseball fix or commisseration as the case may be. ps I've updated my location info for more accuracy. But warning, my posts can be both off the wall and out in left field!

From the NY Times: Exorcism Is Not Complete Until Red Sox Win the A.L. East By MURRAY CHASS Published: May 24, 2005
The Boston Red Sox won the World Series last October for the first time in 86 years, and they got there by beating the Yankees. What else is there for them to live for?
If they play the Yankees in the American League Championship Series this October and beat them again (they certainly would not be able to top the way they did it last year), then win the World Series again, so what? Been there, done that.
The one thing the Red Sox have not done in this era of the renewed rivalry is finish ahead of the Yankees in the American League East, winning the division championship, of course. For the Red Sox to finish second while the Yankees place third would be an empty achievement. Being the division champion is what it is all about for the Red Sox this season, whether they admit it or not.
Which is a roundabout way of saying the Red Sox have blown it.I'm not sure I could use enough eye-rolling smileys to adequately express my reaction...

Thought you'd like to know:
TORONTO -- After three losses in Toronto, Red Sox manager Terry Francona announced that both first baseman John Olerud and catcher Kelly Shoppach will join the team in New York tonight for the start of a weekend series with the Yankees.
To make roster spots for the new players, Boston designated 32-year-old catcher Shawn Wooten for assignment and optioned righthanded pitcher Jeremi Gonzalez to Pawtucket. Both played in Boston's 8-1 loss to the Blue Jays last night.
Gonzalez pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits, and Wooten went hitless in his only at-bat spelling Jason Varitek late in the game.
Shoppach was supposed to come up when Doug Mirabelli was disabled with a wrist injury May 20, but Shoppach was ''banged up," according to Francona. Shoppach was tied for the International League lead with 11 homers prior to last night's game against Durham and he also had 27 RBIs with a .270 batting average. Olerud was 3 for 8 during his brief tenure with the PawSox.
The Sox wanted to take advantage of Olerud's lefthanded stroke at Yankee Stadium. He played 49 games last season for the Bombers and hit .280 with four homers and 26 RBIs in 164 at-bats. In his 17th season, he's a lifetime .295 hitter with a .399 on-base percentage.
Olerud is likely to earn some playing time against tough righthanders and spell Kevin Millar on defense in the late innings. Millar did manage three hits last night, showing off a new batting stance.
Millar said he scrapped the open stance he adopted last season when he was struggling and returned to his old, more closed stance last night.
''I felt a lot more comfortable at the plate," said Millar who also got picked off second base. ''I was able to get my feet square and it just felt like it used to feel."
Millar didn't sound upset about Olerud's impending arrival.
''This guy is a veteran. I've been a big fan of John Olerud for a long time. He was a great hitter and a great player."
Francona said he didn't want to elaborate on how Olerud would be used, but did say the veteran likely would not play tonight.

Another one for Julia and Rachael, this time a nice article about John Olerud. It's in today's Boston Globe here.

hey hey, LaTroy finally got traded. I was a bit sad because I felt the Cubbies fans turned on him too quickly, but hey we were in a slump and the GM did what he had to do. One of the two pitchers we got in the trade looks good the other nothing more than a triple A player. We will have to see. Bad news about Prior as well Still, we are above .500 and have won 4 in a row. Can't complain. Dev
