Alexandra hit the nails on their heads...
201 To the Society Web Site Authors 2/8/2003
I just came from the Society web site and read everything new that's been posted. It's amazing how many talented writers are on our board. I am enjoying the different 'voices' in the stories, poetry, reviews. I am in awe. And the spontaneous selection that has emerged is such a bonus. Spring does insightful reviews, while others of you do moving or fun poetry and exciting prose. The web site is very well rounded just serendipitously. Thank you all for the wonderful reading experience.

Vlad was talking about things that have now come to be...
233 Also, in other news 2/9/2003 Vlad I
Also posted is the Spike Defense picture. The link is on the bottom frame called: Picture of the Moment. It is my intention to sporadically change this picture as something special comes along. When I change it the next time, I'll begin compiling a page of "previous" moments. On another subject: I just checked the results of the new poll concerning what to do next on the site and this far its a three way tie: A what's new area, A S'cubie profile, and a picture gallery. Hmmmm... looks like a few votes remain outstanding so lets see which one wins. Yet another anouncement: Robert has emailed his next installment on the Truths fiction. I am currently proofing and converting it to webpage format. It should be posted soon. And finally: Thank you Watergal, for the nice words about my sketch. Yes, I placed it there with no acclaim. Being as I am putting together this website, I hate to honk my own horn. However, I like as much as the next person to have it honked. (Cocks an eyebrow, wondering if he ought not rephrase that.) You all have been gushing in your praise over my efforts putting the site together for all of you. I want you all to know that it truly makes me feel very good to know you are enjoying it. It is nice to have my other efforts aknowledged too. So, again, thanks! Vlad, TA, tp

Lookie lookie - Lee's first post!
282 Question about joining 2/10/2003 Lee Hollins
Ok, I have a question. I am a long time lurker on these pages (haven't really worked up the nerve to post here yet though) and highly enjoy the S'cubie website. Spring's analyses, Rusty's, Robert's and Vlad's stories are amazing! Now my question is: how do I join this wonderful group? Do I need to send an email to Vlad? Is there some kind of initiation ritual? Some pledge sworn to JM? I've highly enjoyed the discussions and debates on this board - nice to know I have people to share my love of "Buffy" with since none of my friends watch it (what can I say, I'm friends with morons!). Keep up all the great work on the website! -Lee Edited By Lee Hollins at 2/10/2003 5:19:00 PM.

Early Nan reviewage...
342 At last! 2/11/2003 Nan Dibble
An episode where something HAPPENS. And major Spike screen time. We've been waiting SOOOOOOO long! Maybe the remainder of the season will redeem all the water-treading in the first half. Glad to see Danny Strong (Jonathan) appear again, even visibly dead. He can't look threatening even as the First--too much puppy dog. I was suspicious of Andrew, but (wonder!) he was able to stick to his guns and his new convictions. Of course he's too much of a (dare I say) sissy to seriously contemplate blowing away a bunch of innocent teen-age girls all by himself just because somebody told him to do it. He couldn't even stab a piglet. The wonder is that he managed to stab Jonathan sufficiently hard on the first try to kill him outright--if he'd had to persist, I think he'd have folded right there. Not somebody to be relied on in a crisis, if that crisis can be resolved only by fighting to the death... But still, an improvement over his bending to every breeze that blows. And what portends for our dear Spike, with Principal Wood with a grudge almost as long as his life, trained and oh so very ready to take him out? I shudder to think! This episode, finally, is worth rewatching and rethinking. I am grateful. I'll be interested in what the rest of you have to say about it. Nan

373 Doublemeat Palace 2/12/2003 Alexandra K
I was reading recent posts about analyses when someone (Spring? Vlad? both?) said there are no throwaway episodes. Of course, Doublemeat Palace sprang to mind. This episode ranks possibly at the bottom of the entire multiseason series. But it suddenly dawned on me that the looks of that week's demon's was a big (big, big) metaphor for Buffy's behavior with Spike. She was paralyzed by a big 'dick'. The demon's head growth couldn't have been any more blatantly modelled on a phallic symbol. I guess they even handed the analogy to us by the scene behind the palace with Buffy and Spike. Okay, the sudden, fleeting ability to analyze is gone now. I think I didn't want to analyze the part where the dickdemon gets the appendage cut off and ground up. I came late to the Scoopme board so I imagine everyone already commented on the symbolism on the episode board under the 'Doublemeat Palace" when it first aired. But being nonanalytical to the nth degree, it always surprises me when I 'get' anything.

TWO - TWO Posts for the Price of ONE! (These just go together...)
443 One late night question 2/13/2003 Rob Sorenson
So, Vlad, how come my pathetic plea numbers keep rising when I'm not even posting? There's no need to pad the stats, my friend. The plea count can't be any higher than 148. On another topic, if I may stray from BTVS for a moment, I'm compelled to give credit where it's due: the last two episodes of Angel rank with the best they've ever done over there. Everyone there has done an amazing job, and I can't take my eyes off it.
452 Concerning Rob's Plea about Xander 2/13/2003Vlad
Rob, you brought it to my attention that the value attributed to your pleas concering Xander were incorrect. I apologize for this and I immediately went to the HTML code and recalibrated the Plea Counter. It should now display the correct number of pleas, with only a minor margin of error. Sorry for any inconvenience. Please take a look and inform me if there is anything yet wrong with it. Your ever diligent technopagan, Vlad Edited By Vlad I at 2/13/2003 9:13:00 AM.

Fun with French on Valentines Day..)
83 To Lee P-Fell out of my chair laughing 2/14/03
Lee P. So glad to hear from you again! I was just mentioning how we hadn't heard from you in a while. Your message floored me I laughed so hard. Do you take French lessons with Buffy?
I'm sorry I found your post so funny. I thought I would share my mirth and give you a good line to use the next time you catch JM in a darkened hallway (alley, bar, bedroom...).
May I translate?
"Voulez vous la couche avec moi?" You say?
Translation: "Would you the diaper with me?"
Somehow I don't think that was what you were trying to say! (You were SO close! If only couche didn't have a double meaning you would have been fine!) (Though maybe you were trying to say that and who am I to get all judge-ey *smirk*)
If you would like to invite our Jamesey-boy to get all hot and heavy, why not try dropping two letters and adding one more.
"Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?" would be your line, or maybe if you are really lucky it could be his line!
I am so glad to hear from you though, it has been a long time. (Part 5 I believe.) And I would like to repeat, I am only replying because I found your post so amusing. So if you think I am being judge-ey, tell me off and I will go slink off into a corner and do some pennance. *chuckle*
Post more often will ya! We had so much fun together in Part 5.
Watergal who is trying to share her mirth withought looking judgey and who may or may not be succeeding (I so hope I succeeded.)

120 Re: Joss on the Web 2/15/2003 Alexandra K Diane said, "I've read several postings wherein it was suggested that Joss ought to have a spy lurking on the Buffy sites to see how the fans are reacting."
That would be an extremely intelligent move on his part, and my impression is that he's nothing if not extremely intelligent. Whether or not he has chosen the Scoopme web site for his research, is another matter. But Scoopme is the most intelligent board I"VE come across, so the odds would be in favor or someone on his staff monitoring at least some of our threads. If the monitor has been lurking long enough, he/she is probably enjoying the silliness. My suspicion is that Joss would have intelligent monitors with a sense of humor, and they would appreciate our lighthearted SSS board.

(wherein Alexandra pontificates on what needs to be resolved before Buffy ends in a rather prescient manner...)
193. What Do We KNOW About Season 7 2/17/2003
What things do we know for sure have to happen or not happen in Season 7?
1. SMG is probably not coming back for another year, so Buffy's role in the series must change somehow.
2. If - I say IF - Spike gets dusted, the fans would be howling if anyone did it but Buffy, I think.
3. If a SIT got called for any reason, it would not be Vi (with the hat) unless she then quickly got killed.
4. The FE must be "efeated" or put back into balance in some way.
5. ME has to explain how the slayer line getting out of balance allowed the FE to rise.
6. The main Scoobies have to be part of the climax.
7. Joyce's comment to Dawn re Buffy not choosing her has to come true somehow.
8. The goathead seal in the school basement needs to be capped off or otherwise closed.
9. If SMG leaves the series, Spike and Buffy as a couple must fade from the picture. This doesn't necessarily mean JM is out of the series.
10. If SMG leaves the series, the pairing of Principal Wood and Buffy goes nowhere also.
11. Spike is one of the all-time favorite characters so ME would think at least twice before dumping the character (which I hope negates number two).
12. For ANY slayer to be called, either Buffy or Faith would have to die. (It isn't absolutely clear how the slayer line runs due to recent events in episodes).
13. Buffy can't have Principal Wood AND Spike.
14. Spike won't initiate anything romantic with Buffy. It would have to be Buffy who does it.
15. Spike's trigger problem has to be addressed.
16. The Scoobies will have to figure out a way to communicate with Chao An when it is discovered Giles doesn't understand her.
What else is pretty much a given?
Alexandra K.

236. More Inspirational B.A.P. 2/18/2003
Insipired by Spring, winter weather, and "Something Blue", with apologies to Robert S. and Nick Brendan, I give you...
"XANDER THE DEMON MAGNET"
Xander the Demon Magnet Had a very strong sex drive; It only took linoleum To make it aroused and thrive!
All of the local demons Used to laugh before they'd eat; They only saw poor Xander As a Scooby-snacky treat!
Then one night in Season 4, Anya came to say, "Xander, with your parts so right - "Won't you 'drive me home' tonight?"
Then all the demons loved him, And they shouted out with glee, "Xander the Demon Magnet, You survived your puberty!"

Spring makes us cry...
365. Re:Ye Godz 2/19/2003 Spring Summers
Diane - yes, me too. I got upset several times this season watching fairly benign scenes. I mean, finding slow tears running down my cheeks, and not being sure why. There is such a heavy sense of foreboding.
Some of it is Spike-related for me - that image hanging on the cross, all the mental and physical pain he's been facing. That whole story line and the amazing way it's been developed just really gets to me - completely independently of JM's cheekbones (but not of his acting).
I can't think of a story on TV that's more affecting or has been more beautifully written and developed when you look at the big picture. It's why I can't ultimately feel anything but awed admiration for Joss and his team.
Poor, sad, wimpy and seemingly mediocre William becoming Big Bad Spike - yet the two of them seeming perfectly consistent somehow. Yes, you say when you see William, yes, that's just who Spike must have been. And the way the fragility of that Big Bad construct began to become more and more apparent - and then Spike allowing himself to follow his heart and find his soul against all odds - it's almost too much to absorb, and it really gets to me.
To me, it's a sort of everyman story writ large - it's all about the bravery needed to get through the days and the weeks and the months and the years of our lives, and face it all and still die with a smile. And how amazing it is that so many of us manage to do just that, no matter the horrors we've faced.
I have a mom now in a nursing home who lived through the Nazi occupation of her home town in Italy during her teen years, and partly, all this makes me cry because it makes me think of her. She is a happy giving person, even though she's been to hell and back several times, and she gets more immobile from Parkinson's every day. I'm guessing there is some personalization involved for you too, Diane, for all of us, even if we can't name it exactly.
And it's not just Spike, we've come to know and love them all, and it is so obvious they are in some way going to be devastated. Not that I think it will be all bad. I am sure they will emerge victorious overall. I am just so sure the price will be so very dear, and it's worse that I can't begin to put my finger on what form that payment will take.

Diane was thnking about the nature of power...
459 Re: Confused about Everything 2/21/2003 I've been reading these entries with interest. The problem seems to be one of choice. The shamans didn't offer the First Slayer a chance to choose. They didn't offer one to Buffy, either. Therefore, Buffy's correct in calling what they did a "violation."
Did she make a mistake in rejecting the power they tried to instill in her? I don't think so. Whether or this "power" was demonic in origin, what form it might take, how it would affect her for good or ill, what its side effects might be or how it was to be used--the shamans didn't bother to describe in any way. They didn't ask.
By taking away the Slayers' right of choice, they conducted a violation in the most personal and intrusive way. No wonder the First Slayer seemed so savage. Such a violation had to have been devastating, and right now a devastated Buffy is the last thing that's needed.
From another perspective, to accept a weapon when you have no idea what it is or how to used or what it's for--idocy! How easily can that weapon can be turned against the user?
I can go on for hours about how this episode reflects on a patriarchal society and its effect on women and on how it continued down through the ages in the form of the Watcher's Council (yes, the Coucil had women members, but they were as patriarchal in their behavior as the men were.) Indeed, I believe that this may be the core of the story. If I can draw enough together, I'll post it to Vlad for the website.
This, I believe, is why the episode disturbed us all so much.
Diane U
