Great job Spring! I admire your mental powers. ;D I thing I remembered when I was reading through the dialogue was the use of "1138" which is a number George Lucas likes to use. Guessing that was deliberate. Though it seems strange when thrown in with all the Superman and BTVS references. Thanks, Liz. I don't know George Lucas' stuff (I assume you are talking about Star Wars here, but I barely know that story) so I can't add any illumination to the 1138 reference, if it is meant to refer to Lucas' work. Ah, wasn't expecting any illumination, just reading the dialogue you transcribed reminded me of the observation I had made when I watched it. George Lucas made a film made THX 1138. Star Wars makes reference to a "prisoner transfer from cell block 1138" The number is supposed to be referenced in some manner in his other films as well. So it popped out at me when Fine referenced "project 1138." Could be completely coincidental though... ETA: It's been suggested elsewhere that 1138 is an homage to Carrie Fisher, which certainly seems plausible. I'm spending way to much time thinking about this and it's not that important.

Thanks, Spring, for a hilarious review! I'm amazed at your powers of, errrmmm, James-not-thinkage.
Other than the parts with Sp-ine, it was a pretty campy episode. It's almost as if DeKnight used the entire thing just to be able to talk about "slaying Buffy the Vampire" and so JM could get off his dead-pan "Clark, there's no such thing as vampires."
I found it enjoyable, but the vamp harlettes were a little hard to take.

I will watch this show as long as JM is in it but why can't they let him tuck in his shirt? Or why can't he just take it off? And why can't they get better writers? He deserves better than this dreck. Thanks oh thanks for your commentary. Whoa, better writers? How the mighty have fallen. Did anyone catch that THIRST was written by Steven DeKnight? And actually, I thought it was one of the best written (and funniest) "SMALLVILLE" episodes I've ever seen. Lynn, I'd guess the best advice is not to expect Joss-quality tv. (Refer to the AQUA discussion. "SMALLVILLE" is so much more straight out comic book in its plots, writing and villains.) Darn that Joss, he spoiled us for life!

Spring, once again an out of this world review and recap!
You are to be commended for your determination not to think of James. (Was that your Resolve Face we saw?)
So many great lines and priceless quotes, but I'll just comment on a few here:
"Milton visits Lex, who, I did not realize until now, lives at Kensington Palace. They play pool. The Professor talks to Lex while circling the table, expertly stroking his cue stick, and giving top-notch smirk."
Ah, yes the "sinister" two. And pay attention to the cue stick from the beginning of the scene. We've got a double dose of sinister going on here: both Lex and Fine are playing pool lefthanded. Now I know why Lex was always my favorite on Smallville - until James showed up, I'm no dummy.
"Yes, the lackey has reached for his weapon, but it seems Milton has already got his. An incredibly long, hard projectile suddenly springs from Milton’s finger, just like a . . . long hard thing that suddenly springs."
And, Spring, we were hoping that you and your vaunted measuring tape would give us better data. But we'll give you the benefit of the doubt, as being otherwise occupied not-thinking-of-James.

Definitely, I had the feeling the "Sp-ineless" part of the ep was focused on the Buffy-camp thing - and on just being "halloweeny." I thought it was fun overall.

Spring, once again an out of this world review and recap! Many thanks, leftlady! Yes. I had my resolve face on the whole time!! I didn't even notice the left-handedness of Lex. I never watched Smallville before this, but of the regulars, Lex and Chloe are my favorites so far. You can't expect me to use my measuring tape AND not think of James, both at the same time. I'm only human.

Anything we can do to help? I mean with anything but the not-thinking-of-James? We have to support our sister S'cubie afterall.

As another lefty, I notice that too....And as to writing, though I don't like the female character in "Bones", DB got a better break than James and the writing was zippy in the last episode (Cannibals). I live in hope that Smallville will make So-Fine the second lead.

Screencaps of JM's scenes for 5.5The TWOP wasn't bitter at all (just justly critical of the writers, IMHO), but it wasn't that funny or fan-girl squee either, so I'll skip posting it this week.

Brava Spring! Another fine example of your mental powers!
And while I think that Lola may have been too hasty in joining your cult, I can easily see why she so admires you... ;D
Linda, #rofl1#
P.S. I actually think this episode was making fun of its own self. One of Chloe's lines made me laugh: "Buffy Sanders. (Name changed to protect the vapid.)"

Well, OK. Take your time. I agree the ep was making fun of itself. I thought it was pretty cute. Thanks for the nice words about my review, Linda.

I think I am still in mourning. Spike was such a multifacted character:comic hero, killer, sensitive lover, bad boy, drama queen, sacrificial Christ figure, and just gorgeous naked. (Angel was just a familiar role like Heathcliff or Rochester.) I have wondered if his creators even really know what they did. So I apologize for being grumpy about the comic book Smallville. Forgive, all! Lynn

#rofl1# #rofl1# #rofl1# I still have yet to see this particular episode, but if the way you described this scene here: is any indication of how great this episode really was, I think it should win an Emmy, an Oscar, and a Tony award. Brilliant review, Spring! #clap# But I think you've made you're last purchase at the crazy store--why oh why would you possibly want to not think about James?! That's insane troll logic. Have you recently had a head injury of some sort? I'm a little worried about you. . . . . . and now I'm over it. ;D

OH - you should watch the ep, if only for the pool-playing scene with Lex. James gets to do a bit of the snarky smartass thing he's so good at - Milton is a touch more subtle than Spike, but it's still fun to watch him get the better of Lex (for now). I know! You are so right. It was a fool's errand to try to keep myself from thinking of James. I'll try not to make that mistake again. Thanks for the feedback, Monnie. Glad you enjoyed the review.
