{sigh} So lonely here on the left coast. Julia, and too sleepy to really follow the story, damn. That was exactly my problem. That, and the Migraine That Won't Die. Since Wednesday, if anyone is keeping track. However...I liked the episode, a lot. THIS is what Doctor Who should feel like, for me, I guess. The slimy alien, the social commentary (ahem...a society that doesn't ask questions and will believe the walls are made of gold if you tell them they are - what does THAT sound like?), the humor. And the Doctor, still showing a very unusual level of ruthlessness, for him. He clearly doesn't have time for anyone who doesn't live up to his moral code. As, for example, Adam. I woulda taken him home, too...but I might have waited to get the port taken out of his head, first. I mean, I wanted Adric kicked off the TARDIS nineteen ways from Sunday, but HE got to stick around. Of course, taking him home was a bit more effort. And then they killed him, and I felt guilty. Anyway, I thought this one was fun. But did anyone else think that the Doctor's glowing description of Earth didn't sound all that nice to them? The population alone....

Oohhh, he's visiting a different floor! Think that's a no-no. You go, guy - look for the answers! Heeeeeeeee! "the Martian boondocks" ;D Um. But is the answer to have a chip in your head? Um, 'cuz then the thing that has taken over and changed everything can, like spy on you and stuff, yeah? Plus, she was awful eager to take his technologically superior thingee. And she's giving him quite the sales pitch. "He's no one." Of course the Doctor isn't anywhere on their list of people. This laughing freeze room guy is . . . really rather creepy. Yes, the Doctor and Rose are no one... *laughs* I like the editor; he's probably the best thing in this ep.

They're all zombies! Who is the Editor in Chief?? Well, that's just ewwwwwwww! Call him Max all you want, but he's still really really ewww ewww ewwww!Wow! She's gotten gutsy and is heading out to investigate too. No philosophical debate - just "yes". ;D Well I'll be damned. Dowload all this knowledge into a phone call? Knowledge is power . . . Dang! That's the Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe, to you. (and I'll bet you thought Raxacoricofallapatorius was a mouthful)

Is a slave a slave if he doesn't know he's a slave?
Hmmmmm.....depends who you ask, I suppose. Then there's happy slaves. If totaltitarianism is successful, that's exactly what one gets: people happy to submit to the womb-like national state. Is it better to be a happy slave than it is to be free and miserable?

Chips in their heads. Spike would feel right at home. LOL! I thought of Spike when they would say 'spike'. The writer, Russell T. Davis, is a big Buffy/Angel fan. So it may be deliberate.

The slimy alien, the social commentary ( ahem...a society that doesn't ask questions and will believe the walls are made of gold if you tell them they are - what does THAT sound like?), the humor. Most societies, unfortunately. *smiles* oddly enough, I found this one of the weaker eps in the season's second half. Still, it would be a boring world if we all liked exactly the same things to exactly the same degree. I think you're absolutely write that it's a traditional DW story in many ways, but I'd say it's like one of the more forgettable ones (for me). The social satire does make it interesting, though, and it's far more subtle than the clumsy Iraq references in "World War Three". And then there's *no spoilers! no spoilers!* I thought for a second the Doctor was going to hit him! The Ninth Doctor is hard, is, in fact, something of a soldier (not surprising, since he's just fought an apocalyptic war). Really? I baked a cake. ;D The Fifth Doctor was a very mild character and quite long-suffering. He had to be. Tegan was bad enough, forever saying she would be late for her flight when she was actually a time traveller, but Adric and Turlough drove me mad. I liked Nissa, though. All those people, all that industrialisation. An advanced culture could perhaps make a good job of it, but it could so easily all go horribly wrong.

I found this episode really interesting. and funny.
Oh, so I guess Adam was allowed to come along. Still trying to puzzle out who the Doctor allows to travel with him and why.
The Doctor coaching Rose. Hee.
Adam Parallel with Rose in The End Of The World.
He's your boyfriend. Not anymore. Hee.
So, is this supposed to be the same the space station as in End of the World, or just the same set?
Commerce. Promenade-like. Lots of stuff like this in this show.
the Doctor's so cute. Snippant towards Adam. Different that towards Rose.
I like this black chick.
We are the news. This is why this episode is so interesting. Parallels to/Critique of the world we live in.
Something fictional. As opposed to his "news?"
So exactly when is this phone call being made to? How is that determined?
Multi-sex, undecided, or robot. I like it.
Religious/Cultlike aspect to the newscasters. Seance.
Transmits information but doesn't remember any of it. Talking heads. Dangerous.
Every single fact in the Empire beams out of this place. Now that's what I call power. Information is power. Yes.
So this villian guy can't pick up the Doctor or something?
And he answers to... some one or something.
Promotion is never good.
Adam's up to something.
Floor 500 like Room 101.
Walls aren't made of gold, but the floor is covered with snow. In a space station. That takes work.
OK, this is the first episode where I can see the scary being scary, if you get scared by this kind of stuff.
Corruption of the media.
The editor-in-chief ~ God?
Adam's going to get himself in trouble.
Willing to give up personal freedoms for access to infinite knowledge.
Reminds me of that Sliders episode in the mall.
I don't know anything, but you're a journalist!
There's a way things "should" be, and the Doctor knows what that is. Hmm.
Foreboding.
Faustian Bargain.
Now the Editor's looking into the doctor.
He is no one.
Plumbing's very important.
Really hot everywhere but floor 500?
Yep, sucking heat out of floor 500. Why not into empty space?
Adam down below and Rose and the Doctor up above.
The vomit-o-matic. Hee! Except, such are symptoms you need to pay attention to.
How can you walk through the world and not leave a single footprint?
Cheesy monster. Sigh.
Is a slave a slave if he doesn't know he's enslaved?
Knowledge is Power, but you remain an unknown. Makes him dangerous. Makes him safe.
Like the Dalek downloading the internet in the last episode.
Brave New World.
Characters in their own time have to set things right, the Doctor just inspires them.
Yep, and he's been sent home.
How did the Doctor know about the answering machine.
Clap on, clap off. Hee!
I only take the best. I've got Rose. Aww...
6 months later. From the last episode, or since he went on assignment?

Interesting mentions from the twop recap: Theme of blind transmission of information: The Doctor feeding Rose information about where and when they are and the beginning. "The thing is, Adam, time travel's like visiting Paris. You can't just read the guide book, you've got to throw yourself in. Eat the food, use the wrong verbs, get charged double, and end up kissing complete strangers." So, can't just read/hear about things, you have to experience them for yourself. ref to Bad Wolf channel (is there any more to this, or just a running gag?) Adam and Eva (Suki's real name) ref to genesis myth and tree of knowledge? Fourth Human Empire --> Fourth Estate (i.e. the media)
