In the "Bring On The Night" Episode board, another hot topic has been the subject of my topic here. Xander as a Watcher: I thought this notion would be totally ridiculous myself, until I read the great, ongoing epic fanfic series "Dancing Lessons" at randomthought.addr.com/redemptionista/. So you know up front - it's primarily a Buffy/Spike story, but please don't let that put you off because it is OH so much more! I think overall it's rated PG-13 to R in some spots, and I'm not exaggerating calling it an "epic" piece of work. In it, Xander becomes Faith's Watcher - one reason he decides to become a watcher IS that despite his good career in construction, just as per the TV canon, he learns he'd make about double the salary plus great benefits. Guess the COW were still smarting from Buffy's rebuke of them in S5 in getting Giles restated and "with back pay". Anyway, check it out for a great read! Spike as a Watcher: I don't think Spike as a Watcher is all that far-fetched an idea, either - can you imagine the knowledge he'd bring to his charges? Now as a SLAYER (another hot topic from the "BOTN" ep board) - eh, I don't know where I stand on that one yet, but I'm sure he'd be a good one. Hey, JM may be 40-ish but the way he moves - no worries here! ALL folks in their 40's and up should be so fit 'n trim! ;-) Miss Pamela

and Spike as Watcher or Slayer Miss Pamela - I couldn't get into the web site you typed for us. It's there but it won't let me stay. Instead it keeps bumping me to another page within half a second which says, "the page cannot be found" and to go back to torn-world.com but nothing is there either. It looks interesting. Any ideas on how to get into it? Can you get in still? Are you using Internet Explorer? I am using Netscape and I wonder if that is the problem.
I wrote a bit on Spike as a Watcher or Slayer under Misc./Poss. Spinoffs from BtVS/#7 if you're interested. Alexandra K.

and Spike as Watcher or Slayer Yes, the problem definitely is with Netscape - I just tried going to the "Dancing Lessons" URL I listed above and got the same error you did. I have version 4.7 (which I don't think works too great with Windows 98, anyway). It used to be my favorite browser bar none, but lately I've had better luck with Internet Explorer (currently using version 6.0). So just try it again with IE.
And yes, I did read your post on Spike as Watcher - good thoughts! Yeah, he definitely would be the best candidate to keep Dawn the Vampire Slayer (or SIT) in check! If Giles thought *Buffy* was rebellious, oh my... And maybe Willow could be "Senior Watcher" or something to keep BOTH juveniles-at-heart Spike and Dawn in check. ;-)
You also said you felt that Spike might not be as much into the research as he would be the fighting, which I could see. But also, maybe some of the bookish William might come to the fore, if research is something he'd find necessary to help keep his Nibblet safe. Dawn's no dummy, but I think Spike would definitely be more suited to bookwork. Miss Pamela

Sorry about that; I didn't know until Alexandra was good enough to try it with Netscape and it totally threw her off to another page with errors. It used to be my favorite browser, but with more people using web-building tools like Front Page that have quick, cool features that work best in (if not only in) Internet Explorer, I've gone to using IE almost exclusively. OH - lest someone thinks this is off-topic: the "Dancing Lessons" website contains an EPIC story that involves Xander as Faith's Watcher (plus LOTS more) - and does it, I think, rather convincingly. You can find it here in IE: randomthought.addr.com/redemptionista/ 12/22/2002 Miss Pamela

Oh, yes. I can see Spike looking all studious with wire rim glasses checking through some tome and teaching Dawn (or another slayer?) about a demon that he ran across back during WWII and telling her a fantastic story of his clever fighting moves. The writers could have an open field with Spike's long history adding to his research.
One small problem - how do the writers work in a shirtless (or more) Spike to his more responsible persona?

"Oh, c'mon now, luv - all work and no play makes ol' Spikey a dull boy! Might give 'em a bit of a glimpse of me off-hours - uh... 'indoor activities' shall we say? Use your imagination, pet. Say, you don't go by 'Xandra' as a nickname, do you, now? I'd hope not as it reminds me of the whelp, plus it's a pretty name." ;-)

"Someone" said to Alexandra: "Say, you don't go by 'Xandra' as a nickname, do you, now? I'd hope not as it reminds me of the whelp, plus it's a pretty name."
By "it's a pretty name" I'm sure they meant "Alexandra" is a pretty name and preferred it to a shortened version. ;-)

I like the idea of Xander as a Watcher. Come to think of it I like any idea where his character actually comes to the forefront as regularly as Spike, Willow and Dawn do. As much as I love the way this season is shaping up, I'm starting to despair that my favorite character isn't going to be given a major storyline in what could very well be the final season. It would be a shameful sendoff for Xander if all the attention went to Buffy, Willow, Spike and Dawn. Xander might appear in the occasional argument with Anya and fix windows. Outside of that he gets no attention from the writers whatsoever.

Actually, all through the seasons Xander has been the human glue holding all the magical, superhero, otherworldly types together as a unit. I've always seen him as their tether to the real world. He's in the thick of things usually, if not always effectively. But he never stops trying (except maybe for his wedding.) What would happen if Xander wasn't there? I think after awhile the others would lose sight of humanity in their own narrow views of the world. I know you are saying that Xander doesn't get enough storyline focused on him. I am thinking Xander is going to play a big part in the climax to the season because he is the linchpin for the group. I bet he'll have something to do that nobody else will see is important but it becomes vital.

From your mouth to Joss's ear, Alexandra. Generally speaking the Xandman's always done little things to help out enormously in previous years, but he never really came to the forefront until he stopped Willow. He seems to have turned a corner in his maturity and responsibility this year, and it's nice to see. I'm getting the sense that the writers aren't sure how to fit him in to what's going on...outside of giving him some scenes with Anya and utilizing his carpentry skills.
