Completely new brain, is my guess. Now, where he's storing all his memories and knowledge while he grows a new brain, I have no idea. They're big with the separation of the personality from the memories on this show. Alternatively, I guess you could say, "Different actors." But that's cheating. There are some explanations, but they're fandom explanations. A popular idea in fandom is that regeneration is an artificial process, the result of some form of unguessed-at biological/genetic engineering. In "The Deadly Assassin" we learn about the Matrix on Gallifrey, which stores the minds of deceased Time Lords (somehow uploaded - there is some confusion as to whether this is merely their memories or the psyche itself, but the story does imply that the Matrix is a form of secular afterlife). Fandom has taken this idea and come up with the notion that the Doctor's memories are uploaded into the TARDIS during the regeneration itself and then returned to him. This is just fan speculation, though. Anyway, not all the reincarnations occurred in the TARDIS. Doesn't need to be that complicated, anyway. Let's say his brain doesn't all get turned over at once, so memories can be stored in the part that's still there, then transferred to the regenerated parts as they become available. Many insect species (for example, the common fruit fly ) undergo full metamorphosis from larvae through a pupal stage to an adult. The nervous system is almost completely turned over in the process, but the "almost" is key. You can teach a larvae something and have the adult remember it.

Huh. That's not the way its supposed to work. So Harriet Jones did become Prime Minister. And it is now the Golden Age. Evil Santas! Brass band. Snerk. Evil Christmas Tree! OK. So this is right after the end of Parting of Ways. Apple in his bathrobe. Hee. "Something is coming." That was helpful. Guinevere I Students hijacking the signal? So... student pranks are often on this level in the UK? Ooh. Torchwood. Why certain people turned into lemmings and not others? These shots of people standing on the edges of buildings is pretty spectacular 1/3 of the worlds population Blood relatives but not spouses. Hmm. Ah, all the A+ I think I'd feel more emotion for the plight of the doctor if he hadn't just gotten an entirely new body/actor. Hey, military dude looks a little bit like Mickey. Go, Rose!!! All he needed was a cup a tea. For real. Hee. The Lion King quotage. #rofl1# Awesome. The Doctor's ID, as Earth's Champion. Yep. No second chances. I'm that sort of man. Alien spaceship thing looks like the floating island in Gulliver's Travels. Earth as a "noisy" planet Ooh! Like the deathstar! So, the Prime Minister's not so forgiving. Motivation of "the monsters" Nice confrontation between the Doctor and the Prime Minister. Ah, the TARDIS's costume room. ;D The Doctor wears glasses. Raining ash. Ugh. So... is every regeneration experience similar? Or is this one unusual for some reason, like having channeled the TARDIS right before?

Psst. Do you think they stop periodically to let Rose visit her stylist and get her roots touched up? 'Cause check out the eyebrows on my avatar. It just occurred to me to wonder about the TARDIS's hairstyling capacity.... She's a Rose who's proud of her roots.

Nice point about the issue of pre-emptive attack. That didn't occur to me watching, but I really like it. Well done.
I totally missed Cassandra. Where was she in this episode?

Unless I missed it too, I don't think she was. Maybe Rachael just posted that here becaue they showed both the Christmas ep and the first ep w/number 10 on the same night on SciFi and so the threads just blurred together?

I was responding to this: So, the memories are there, but the way they're processed is different because of different brain, as Rachael says. Hmmm....Now I'm thinking of how Cassandra put her memories into Rose, The Doctor, and then one of the petre dish humans and picked up their 'feelings'. Huh. *muses incoherently about the parallel there*
