Oh, it's so lovely to see Tony on the small screen again. He's soooooo good as the bad headmaster. Loved his scene with The Doctor in the pool room. Very nicely done. Poor Ten. Tempted again...I love how you can read in his face how very much he'd want that. Jacob (on TWoP) pointed out how loneliness is really the dominant theme in this season, and you can see that be revisited in so many intriguing ways...Sarah Jane's loneliness at being left behind, Rose's loneliness at the thought of being left behind, Mickey stuck in the car. It carries over nicely, too, from Tooth and Claw, with poor infected boy forced to carry the wolf (nice parallel to the Parting of the Ways), Queen Victoria's loneliness without Albert... **nods nods nods** These little . . . flashes of sadness. From everyone. Even, as you say, the Queen.

Heeee!!! I really loved Mickey in this ep. ;D He got to be quite the hero, really, even with the Doctor snarking a bit at him about the rats and Rose all cranky at him "crashing" her party.

Well, my response to this one can be summed up with a short play-by-play of my responses while watching with Dave: "Oooh! Giles!" (Dave: "It's not Giles. He's got Hannibal Lecter hair." Did I mention he's good with the observiness when he's trying?) Heeeeeee! Hannibal Lecter hair - oh, it soooo was, wasn't it? I know! And the Doctor was so . . . bouncy joyful to see her. Heh heh. ;D I was squeeeing so much when I saw K-9. Because while I remember Sarah Jane, she was not necessarily a fave of mine, and K-9 was. **pets K-9** Yeah. The idea of her feeling . . . "that way" about the Doctor is a bit retconn-y. Although, the feelings of "what now" after just suddenly being left behind after traveling the universe / time stream? I can really see that. Ah, I like a variety of companions. Especially when they snark amongst themselves.

One of the thoughts I've had on this is that the unique aspects of Ten are almost exclusively cheerful, while the deeper and permanent Doctor is lonely, a carry-over from his Ninth incarnation.

Did I mention he's good with the observiness when he's trying?) "Eww. Not Giles. Giles doesn't eat little girls. But does he ever work in a high school that doesn't have a Hellmouth?" "Heee!" (Are we sitting comfortably?) "OMG...is it? Sarah Jane?" (Dave: "What?") "Sarah Jane Smith! She was a companion in the 70's. Doctors 3 and 4! She's a journalist." (Dave: "How many synapses do you have devoted to this show?" Also, sometimes he's snarky.) "Squee!" (Yup, it's her.) "Oh, tell her who you are!" "Heee!" (So you decided to scream.) "He's Rose's boyfriend. Well, sort of. I guess ex. He's always hoping she'll come back to him, though. But honestly, given the choice between Mickey and Ten, it's no contest." "It's not like he ever told you he was coming back for you." "K-9!" "Is it worse when they're giggling than when they're sniping at each other?" (Dave: "Yes.") "Honey, of course he has to leave them behind. He's 900 years old!" "I didn't really get that vibe from Sarah Jane back in the day. It's a bit retconned. Especially Doctor 3." "Look at all the owls." (Will only make sense if you've seen Saturday the 14th.) "Oh...are they a big computer?" "Damn, I'm good." "K-9 could stand to be more direct." "K-9!" (laser beams) "Well, you can just make another one. He is Mark III, after all." "No, don't take Mickey! Gah! He's such a whiner." "Heh. Told you. New K-9." "Do I stay with WHO? Which one? Argh." "Aww." (Some things are worth getting your heart broken for." My reactions were similar. There was some degree of fan indulgence in that ep. ;D As for your point about retconning, you're right of course. With hindisght, it's possible to see some slight indication of this (there's a surprising vibe all through the Third Doctor story "The Green Death", when Jo Grant leaves). But, yes, it is definite retconning.

Also Sarah Jane making him say goodbye this time. That was good. A wonderful moment. Except that she should have stayed! Grrr! I wonder if it really was goodbye?

Well, I wasn't here to comment on Friday night, but I did jot down notes when I watched my taped ep. So, before I read thru people's posts, here are my "stream of consciousness" thoughts - split into two posts, 'cuz I didn't want that big of a post . . . ;D ASH!!!! Oooooh, so oily and smarmy. And he’s eating the little kiddies! Oooooo, the Doctor in glasses, so hottie hot hot! Hmmmm. The kids are too smart? Is he making them smart before he eats them – that seems a bit of a waste . . . Heee! Rose all dressed up in kitchen worker garb, dishing out the lunch goo. Mickey called them – good for you, Mickey! Spotting something is wrong and wronger than the Earth authorities can deal with. Bleargh! Some kind of flesh eating chemical stuff? Or just icky for the alien-things? So, we’ve got weird aliens in here somehow, someone eating the kiddies, corrosive stuff eating the grown-ups in the kitchen, and hypnotising / smart-making computers? I’ll be interested in seeing how this all ties together. Oh, ASH is just so wonderfully slimey. Heeeeee! It’s Sarah Jane! Actually, the questions SJS has are sort of like I’ve had, with various companions. Why does he just leave them sometimes – seems not fair. And we get a glimpse of harsh not-so-happy Doctor. “Everyone dies.” Which reminds me of when he was so happy last season, yelling “everyone lives, Rose” – which is suppose is actually a rarity for him and thus the extreme happiness. Heee! “Screamed like a little girl.” “I was covered in rats.” Heee! Heck, I’d have screamed too. Ick! They’re like bat-monster-alien things. K-9!!!!!!! Yippee!! I love K-9. Rose asking if he’s gonna just leave her behind too. Ouch! But it’s a good question. We know about some companions. Jamie and Zoe had their memories wiped when the Time Lords put the Second Doctor on trial, and were returned to their original times. (Although there is very strong canonical evidence suggesting the so-called Season 6B theory, in which the Doctor [as part of his punishment] and Jamie are sent on various missions by the Time Lords, before Jamie is sent back to his own time, memory wiped, and the Doctor is forcibly regenerated and exiled on Earth. I just thought you'd like to know. Ahem. ;D See the Wikipedia article, here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Season_6%28b%29)

Sarah Jane! She was a bit younger last time. This is touching. It really was, wasn't it? I've thought about that before, what it would be like to have been a companion and now you're just . . . back to normal. I mean, could life ever be normal again? And it was interesting hearing that the Doctor couldn't bear to keep losing people. But he loses them anyway. He's just not seeing the . . . . well, the natural way to lose them. Aging and death. I guess by not seeing it, he can imagine that they're still out there somewhere. Which, since he travels about in time, is actually true, kinda. Life and death do become less absolute when time travel is involved, particularly for those who travel time themselves. I suppose that's the idea behind the Time War. A species is actually removed from time altogether.

Hey, it's ASH!!! In a psychadelic (sp?) school. What is up with this kid? So they're undercover. Happy Slapping Hoodies. Hee. So there is something up with french fries. How devious. *laughs evilly* Mickey's along for the ride. good results more important than anything. Graveling! Oh, it's computer teacher guy. The Doctor's regenerated half a dozen times since he last encountered Sarah Jane. So this connects with a much earlier episode? Multiple cat-fights. Hee! Oh, so Sarah Jane was a previous companion. So the teaching staff has been replaced by bats. OK. What happens after one's done being a Companion. The Doctor has a robotic dog? Cultural appropriation/exploitation. Rose realizing she isn't special. Curse of the Time Lords. Mickey bonding with the robot dog. Rose and Sarah Jane bonding. I love 10th Doctor's sneakers and suit getup. It's the blowing up the school fantasy. Some things are worth getting your heart broken for. So everyone's in love with the Doctor. They left the doggie behind!! Replaced you with a brand new model. Yeah, he does that.

Right up until the point where he met SJS in the 21st century and she said he'd left her it was a possibility that he could just nip back and pick her up. So yeah, if he doesn't see it, they're one short journey away from a visit, still out there.
