Welcome S'cubies Enter and Enjoy Once upon a time a very very very very long time ago, when we were yet a small band of S'cubies, it was (theoretically) possible to stay caught up on all of the many postings at S 3. Alas and alack we now post so plentitudiously that occassionally it becomes impossible to keep abreast of all of our deep and wonderful thoughts. Yay, verily, we have not only quality, but also quantity. Much, much quantity. And quality sometimes too of course. In the midst of our distress at potentially missing something deep, or meaningful, or snarky, or smutty, or possibly just a mention of "Spike pretty", Sara has ridden to our rescue by assuming the post of S'cubie Synopsizer Extraordinaire! Hour by hour Sara slaves away www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/type.gif [/img] her summaries. They never put us to www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/sleeping.gif [/img] or make us www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/sick.gif [/img]. They put us on www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/cloud9.gif [/img] or have us www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/rofl3.gif[/img]. So we crown her www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/queen.gif [/img] of S'cubie "cliffnotes"; make a www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/cheers.gif [/img] in her honor; and give her a standing www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/claps.gif [/img]. Thanks, Sara from all the S'cubies. We www.soulfulspike.com/membersavatars/smileys/remybussi.gif [/img] you. ENJOY!(disclaimer: I just realized that all the posted times are Central time zone. Not really important--just fyi)

An early introduction, and a foreshadowing of things to come.
On March 10th, she posted:
Let me make sure I have this straight: --You all like Buffy and Angel --You all like each other --You enjoy talking about episodes in fun and thoughtful ways without getting negative and snarky- -You're welcoming and kind to newbies like myself --You occasionally think I'm moderately amusing --AND you're a bunch of NY Yankee haters? *sobbing as I fall to my knees* I'M HOME! I've found my people at last! *collapses into a fetal ball, weeping with joy*

Another glimpse:
From April 5, 2004:
Meanwhile, some random thoughts after catching up on 14 pages of posts...
--Rachael: LOVE the avatar, wistful as it makes me. --Terrific discussion about Buffy/Spike/Angel/Xander/Riley/cookie dough--it's starting to get a little intimidating hanging around a board with so many smart, thoughtful, and articulate people. --I'm still stunned by the abruptness of the "Wonderfalls" cancellation. In a few years more people are going to start complaining about the dearth of quality/risk-taking/quirky television and I'm going to say "Shut the fulk up. You didn't watch that kind of tv while it was on, opting for shows where crappy singers get insulted by a pompous Brit and shallow singles vie for the chance to end up with someone who's spent the past few weeks looking for their soulmate--a vital clue to which was apparently hiding in the tonsils of virtual strangers. You helped put the nails in quality television's coffin--don't start bitching to me about getting blisters from the hammer." --Very intriguing discussion about whether an artist is the best and/or most insightful judge of their own work and its meaning. --Congratulations to Shanno and Patti on their posting milestones!
I'm sure I meant to say more, but my brain is still mired in the springing forward and Mondayness of it all...

And then she started in earnest:
April 28, 11:09 am:
...no, is too much. Let me sum up:
This morning on the board, we've learned:
-something about Angel in a closet. Like this comes as news to many a fanfic writer... -Julia puts on both glasses and contact lenses to worm cows--personally I wouldn't mind blurry vision for that job -Vlad buckled down to the very difficult task of locating pictures of CC's Playboy photos. I'm sure this required lots of research, and we're very appreciative of all the time Vlad spent in front of his computer for this assigment. There's unconfirmed rumors of Vlad developing carpal tunnel syndrome as a result of using just one hand during his research... -Meanwhile, the next science project involved Vlad's bum, although he rushed out of the lab before experimentation could commence. Diane pouted over her hot cocoa while Anne protested that she just likes to watch. No word yet on the status of the clipboard. -Spike doll pretty. -When it comes to defining normalacy, it appears the Addams family wins out over the Cleavers. -Sleep apnea sucks. -Spring had the kind of bonding moment with her son mothers live for. -And Vlad's equipment simply cannot be chained down.
Respectfully submissive submitted,
Sara

April 28: 1:25pm
...not a whole lot happened. And yet we still managed to fill six pages with these insights:
-Shanno's not a fan of Wheetabix. Maybe if she added curry to it... -Shanno, Anne, and Spring waxed (and shaved) poetic about Vlad's bum, while Julia suggested making said waxing Brazilian. Julia, I thought you liked Vlad... -Erin and Rachael are our own Mr. Magoos. -"The Princess Bride" is a S'Cubie favorite--I'll see if I can contain my shock over that revelation. Oh look--I could. -Workplace humor is, more often than not, an oxymoron. As is a network executive with acne. -Mandy Patinkin pretty. Except in "Yentl," where no one is pretty. -When you're a parent, sometimes you *can* still be surprised--and it is enough to live on. -Erin and Rae are moving to Massachusetts, somewhere close enough to Vermont that I can drive down and "visit" Erin on occasion... -Reeta will at some future time regale us with her personal JM experience, but she's looking for a volunteer to be her beta reader. Anyone... anyone... Bueller...? -Cats are easier to housebreak than monkeys, even the flying kind. Who knew? -Lola is everywhere. -George Steinbrenner is an asshat. I know this wasn't actually said recently, but it needed to be.
That is all. Carry on.

Here's what's happened since last I 'capped:
-The garage belonging to Julia's sister and BIL looks like a junkyard threw up in it. -Reeta finished her thesis, got a summer job in Sweden, and bought her first apartment. Congratulations all around to her. Meanwhile I was due to receive an award from the Underachievers Association, but no bothered to send it... -Shanno's project manager is an unappreciative asshat. And Shanno needs a raise. -I was egregiously wrong about Shanno's Wheetabix opinion. Matt's standing by with a wet noodle for flogging. -Opinions varied as to what the 3 S's in Erin, Rae and Sara's monogram really stand for. -Erin talked about rubbing loins with oil, after which conversation seemed to slow down significantly. -Nicki lost 70lbs in about a year, or roughly the equivalent of a small Labrador retriever. (no, really--ours weighed about 75lbs her entire adulthood) -Nigella Lawson=soft-porn cooking. -Current "Andromeda"=raw sewage.
Think that's about it. For earlier recaps check pages 21, 27, and 33 of the last thread.
I am but your humble servant,
Sara

Time for me to head home and probably do some RL stuff for a while. But, just to try and minimize the number of pages to cover on my next visit, one final summation:
-Anne had a cat/grasshopper situation that appears to have been resolved, although grasshopper transport still remains a question. -Erin and Sara discussed how weight loss can change the way your body looks. Who knew? -Anne provided a quiz that lets you know what psychiatrists think about you based on your dessert choice. So far we're unimpressed with their insight, but hungry as hell. -Erin lost that lusty feeling, but with a little coaxing managed to perk right back up. -I managed to make fly fishing sound unbelievably dirty, and that's without even mentioning the Woolly Bugger. -And despite all the recaps we still got to see a bit of Patti-itis in action.
I remain, as ever, your humble transcriber.

...of a half thread. Thread 158 1/2 that is. First recap is on page 5 of said thread. I know what you're asking--was it a right said thread? Read on...
-I'm feeling the love after all those fly-fishing mag quotes, although I'm now apparently part of a menage a troi plus one. -Lola's having an excellent, almost entirely healthy vacation. -More dessert/personality findings are coming in... so far not too many solid matches. Be sure and give it a whirl, gang--it's on page 2 of the 158 and 1/2 thread. -Concerns were raised about various diets and diet meds. A gentleman on my street with some health issues was put on a diet, which he describes as: "Put a piece of food in your mouth. If it tastes good, spit it out." Consensus: eat healthy, stay with what works for you, check with your doctor to make sure all of your various levels are where they should be, try and exercise. Whoa--that's radical. -Fire bad, Spike pretty. -Julia's feeding schedule was completely fulked up by her pack rat BIL. Sounds like she'd like to spend a day in charge of her own life--I say why be any different from the rest of us? -We have some Kids in the Hall fans in the house. -Guns and porn--never a good combination. For one thing, guys who indulge too much in both find the muscles in one hand getting way overdeveloped... -Caraleigh has posted a pretty new picture--everyone go see! -Speaking of pictures, the polls are open until Sunday night--go see and vote! -Matt and I will be under the stairs listening to Mandy Patinkin albums if anyone needs us...
Say it with me now:
Mmmmmm... new Aaangelll.
Enjoy everyone.
Sara
Modified to add: everyone back on dry land okay, Shanno?

April 29, 1:50 pm
So far today the speculation continues to flow hot and heavy, even though it's no longer Wednesday. Since page 14 we've seen/opined/noted/observed:
-Wes+books-sleep=bad -"Squeeee" appears to be the watchword of the day. -Rancid, the songs "World Destruction" and "Eve of Destruction" (no, not Lindsey's Eve), Tennyson's "Ulysses" and, of course, Shakespeare have all been referenced in connection to this episode. I love the breadth of our knowledge base. -Similarities between the visuals of exploding Illyria and combusting Spike were noted. Personally, her big kerboom reminded me of Agent Smith's disintegration at the end of the "Matrix." The only "Matrix" movie I personally recognize as existing, btw. -Buffy/Angel ringtones are available. makd will be keeping an eye out for four horsemen to arrive any day now. -Some folks are speculating that the Angel/Angelus dichotomy will end up being one of this season's main themes. Others see an interesting mirroring effect between the "Buffy" season 7 theme of "you can't fight evil with evil" and all the Faustian bargains we've seen various main and supporting characters make and suffer for. -Huge thumbs up for all the acting performances, with special kudos being addressed to DB, AA, and AD. And in recognition of their talents, the WB will be replacing them with "stormy leather" Charmed nonsense and perhaps the cruellest excuse for a reality show that's bubbled up from the sewer to date: duping people into thinking they're these supremely talented, soon-to-be famous singers. I felt like I needed to bathe in Lysol after seeing that commercial. -Spring's almost rid of her Spiked receptionist, which means if the Libyans show up to deliver Doc Brown's plutonium they'll have to go through proper procedure again. -Background about Shiva/Kali and the name Illyria was provided to help illuminate our understanding (or lack thereof) of the text. -In the "will Fred return" debate Riff's optimism seems to be balancing Rachael's pessimism (and you don't want to know how I almost spelled that word)--stay tuned for further developments. -Speculation has started as to whether the Senior Partners are Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen. Wait, there should be three, yes? For the Wolf, Ram and Hart? Paging Jessica Simpson...
Scribblingly yours,
Sara

April 29, 4:04 pmSince it's been about six pages and I'm due to leave work shortly, I figure a recap is probably not a bad thing to do: -cal and deborah were the buzzby twins, at least avatar-wise. deborah's also included some nifty animation. -Questions of compromise vs. adaptation continued to be debated. Seems to me that ME did both to get even this season of "Angel" on the air and still got hosed for their troubles... -Shanno has a slight issue with the idea of a magic bullet fixing everything in the end, but it's a very subtle undercurrent--almost impossible to pick up on unless you know what to look for. -Ben is Glory. No--*really.* -Spike still pretty. Want real hair color. Where hair color go? -Laurie King is a terrific writer--those who don't know of her, get thee to the mystery section of your local bookstore/library. -Riff has once again dodged the Mexican food question. -Matt is to blame for everything unless noted otherwise. -"You betrayed Shiva! Dohm Shiva ke, vishwas kate oh! (probably not spelled right--I'm going from phonetic memory)" I've had that Indy line in my head all day long... -Riff leads the brigade who suspect too many hints have been dropped to rule out Fred's return. Others are firmly in the "once bitten, twice shy" camp when it comes to trusting Joss. So far the two sides have maintained an uneasy detente, but hostilities could heat up in the coming weeks. Further bulletins as events warrant. -Blame Canada!! Whoops, wrong show. -Angel's road remains murky to most--some suspect he's setting the SP up for some as-yet unknown endgame, while others worry that he's once again straying down the dark path, which as we all know forever will it dominate his destiny. How much of a mislead we're seeing from ME regarding both Angel and Fred is also a very open question. -Consenus seems to be that Angel's save of Spike was more about keeping everything west of the San Andreas fault attached to the mainland and less about saving the man he loves. But you never know... -Anne has found a new target for those still searching for those pesky WMDs in Iraq: salsa in tupperware containers. -Anne also provided a link to a gut-bustingly funny LOTR animation, which even Sara was finally able to figure out how to see: fun.drno.de/pics/english/LOTR.gif. If you get a cranky message after clicking the link, copy/paste it into your browser window. -Spike not only managed to beat out Angel as favorite vamp in a recent poll but defy the laws of addition while he was at it. That's our boy. And I think that covers the main points, but as always feel free to indicate otherwise. Note-takingly yours, Sara

April 29, 7:57 pm
Yeesh, go away for a three hours, make some dinner, come back to a board needing another recap already. A scrivener's work is never done...
-Angel may soon be singing "I've Got You Under My Skin" for Lorne regarding Illyria. Anyone else just go to a scary audio place? Yeah, me too. -Illyria killed everyone else via the heart/guts, Angel by cutting off his head. She also saved Angel for last, meaning he watched everyone else die. Folks are thinking there might be a message in those choices. -"The Brothers Lionheart" by Astrid Lindgren is in print once again. Much rejoicing ensued. -Matt and eg reenacted the end of "Smashed" for the benefit of makd's video collection. Erin found the hidden fly-fishing magazines, and is even now avidly studying the intricacies of the whip finish. -A parallel was drawn between Buffy & Spike's relationship in season 7 and Wes with Illyria now--both Wes and the Buffster side with and defend a potential ally no one else in their circle trusts. -Riff finally answered the all-important tacos vs chorizos question, in the process becoming much more acquainted with the art of the single entendre, which of course all posters here must master bat.. before being allowed to participate on Wednesday. -On page 33 Julia went through a brief spell of Patti-itis, and an extended smell of cow. -Lola took time out of her busy vacation schedule of resting and goofing off to take the Patti-itis mantle from Julia, eetah almost all of Matt's posts, and cast her vote for Julia externalizing her inner goddess. -Shanno reports: ""Eve, I watched Lilah Morgan. I knew Lilah Morgan. Lilah Morgan was a vicious bitch extraordinaire. Eve, you're no Lilah Morgan!" -Ssshhhh--becca's in a very happy slashy place. Try not to disturb her. -George Steinbrenner is still an asshat. Just in case you were wondering.
Your humble scribe,
Sara

April 30, 9:10 am
In brief...
Or in boxers. Or commando. Whatever works for you. Meanwhile, here's what it looks like has happened since last I summarized, way back in part 159 on page 34 (I think):
-Shanno signed on to board the eg/rae/Lola/Sara love train--a few more folks and we'll have an arrangement that might have made Caligula blush. -The WB is abhorrence incarnate, as evidenced by the promos for their new reality show. But we already knew that. -Rachael appears to have hit upon a "conservation of liberalism" principle which states "a progressive/liberal state shall be governed by a strait-laced conservative." See Massachusetts and California for examples. -Julia is most definitely, as she put it, "a specialized kind of delicacy." Lucky for her us folks here on the S3 board are gourmands... no, lemme try that again. Enjoy eating the finest... no, that's not right either. Are able to savor exotic mouthfuls... Yeah, I can't think of any way to make a clean joke here. -Julia also attempted to talk altruism with teenagers, which brings to mind a saying about teaching pigs to sing. -Rae may have written the funniest new thread intro of all time. -Diane has had a spousal breakthrough on the Buffy-viewing front. Numfar!! Do the dance... Oh wait, been there, done that. Never mind. The important thing is, he is now a true believer. Mmwahaha... -The sign-up sheet is now on the fridge for anyone who wants a Wesley clone. Rachael has kindly offered to test out everyone's model after she's finished to make sure it's fully functional. -Caraleigh had a moment when the whole "child sacrifice at thirteen" deal didn't look half bad... But in the good news department, it looks like her daughter will be able to move her grades several notches up in the alphabet. Woo hoo!! Meanwhile Sue and Julia continue to provide excellent advice in this particular subject area. -"Tru Calling" has won some fans on the S3 board, which naturally means Fox will be announcing its cancellation any day now. -Apparently only certain kinds of rum make a rum and coke gay. Who knew? -A brief discussion of poker livened things up for a while, especially when pocket queens were referenced. Rob, do you want to explain that "dead man's hand" is also a poker term and not a reference to the balcony scene in "Dead Things" or shall I? -Tomorrow, on Xander Appreciation Day, I suggest we all raise a glass of ginger ale to celebrate Nicholas Brendon's recovery. Don't worry Rob: a lot of us here know exactly how you feel. -Spike pretty. Spike without shirt: hyperventilation inducing. -Big congratulations to Sunset for achieving triple torch status!! -Spring and Diane are planning on hugging at S'cubie fest. Obviously neither one of them is British. -And I think everyone will join me in wishing Nikki all the best and hoping her upcoming nerve blocks finally do the trick.
I think I hit the high points, and more importantly the low ones as well. But if I've missed anything, you know what to do.
And seriously folks, if you ever get tired of these little recaplets be sure to let me know. I don't want to cross over that line between amusing and annoying.
Stenographically yours,
Sara

April 30, 11:24 am
...it seems as good a time as any for a summary of the last 6 or so pages:
-New vocabulary word of the day: momnipotence. Thank you, Julia. -Glee all around at the confirmation that Jack is Tru's counterpart on "Tru Calling." He's kinda like John Dye on "Touched by an Angel," except watchable. Some debate was sparked as to how we can be sure Tru's actually working for the good guys, other than the fact that the heroine is always working for the good guys. I think the consensus was that Fox lacks enough imagination to air a show that goes against convention. See "Cancellation, Firefly" and "Cancellation, Wonderfalls" for more details. -Lots of hugs for Nikki, who confirmed she'd be attending S'cubiefest come hell, high water, or anything in between. -Julia observed how comfortable Spike is talking with crazies. So why isn't he visiting the S3 board, then? -Ways of pretending to work while doing lots of board posting were shared. Seems like this is a common skill among the S'cubies. -Methods of dealing with kids were discussed, and in what might be a S'cubie first leashes were mentioned without any implied sexual connotation. -Erin and I continued to make fly fishing sound borderline pornographic. I may never be able to speak to our trustees about the sport with a straight face ever again. -There's always room for Jell-O. Particularly if you use a wrestling ring. -Eating food until you puke--apparently never a good thing, no matter how tasty the food. I've been told if you anticipate being in a vomit-inducing situation to eat bananas, as they taste pretty much the same both ways.
And that's where we stand as of write now. It's been a fun morning for all, with the afternoon looking mighty promising for more mischief...
I remain your humble scribe,
Sara

April 30, 2004: 2:45 pm
...another recap to go through:
-Anne's local Fox news network is stupid. Isn't the phrase "Fox news network" a contradiction in terms in the first place? Or is it that the Fox/stupidity connection is redundant? -The merits of frivolous and non-frivolous bonefishing were discussed. -We all checked out images of, and I quote, "the giant goateed Elmer Fudd" otherwise known as the hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne. Speaking of which, Erin made everyone aware of an easter egg on one of the Firefly dvds that allows you to see Adam Baldwin singing Jayne's ballad. -There was some debate as to whether male multitasking would be a good thing. However, no debate, however, as to what a shapeshifter would be like in bed: definitely a good thing. -The potential merits and pitfalls of tossing cow pies were examined. Paper or plastic? Definitely plastic. -Julia returned from a far-too productive morning and went through a bout of Patti-itis, chiming in on cow pies, Adam Baldwin/Marcus Hamilton, Robin Williams quotes, and picturesque speech. Anne shortly followed suit with a mild case of her own. -A puppy dog-esque picture of Jayne broke through Shanno's resistance just a teeny bit. Maybe. -And while alliteration and onomatopoeias seem clear, we may still be fuzzy on the metaphor/analogy difference...
Secretarially yours,

April 30, 2004: 10:41 pm
...and this part seems to be drawing near the end of its lifespan, it seems as good a time as any to summarize what insights the afternoon's musings have provided:
-Men, women, sex, multitasking still debated. Rachael and Shanno assure us that a man who can use both heads at the same time if needs be is always preferable to the alternative. -Folks who use glass dildos shouldn't be stoned. Or something like that. -Both Matt and Shanno dress butch for formal dancing. But after butch is dressed, what do they wear? -Next came a whole thing with cats and purring and a furry Jesus. No hairballs involved, thankfully, but I think Matt might have missed the litter box. -Lots of fans of the "Brimstone" tv series, which I confess I don't remember hearing about, much less seeing when it was on. A bunch of "American Gothic" devotees chimed in as well. All are crossing their fingers for potential future dvd sets of both series. -makd didn't log in and yet still somehow was infected with Patti-itis. Fascinating. We may need to bring the CDC in on this. -be shared some thoughts on clothing colors and body language in "Origin." Very interesting stuff. She also made a very nice catch in pointing out Connor's use of the word "dad" vs. "father" at the end of that episode. -Posting totals and posting frequency reports were, y'know, posted. -Julia contributed a very apt description highlighting how Spike and Angel could both dress in black and yet feel so different: "Spike in black is black and white and bright blue eyes; Angel in black is black and shadow. Spike is like one of those high-end baby mobiles, with sharp lines of contrast to catch the eye; Angel is camoflagued to blend into darkness." -Many Xanderific avatars in honor of Xander Appreciation Day on May 1st. Could be a very interesting look to the board tomorrow. Lots of Xander/Nick Brendon love expressed as well. Good thing Spike isn't the jealous type. Oh, wait... -Matt added a new question to the WTF pile: what exactly is an organic cola? He also confessed to being overheated, and not in the usual way. -A glass dildo? Seriously?
I think that hits the highlights, but it's past eleven from where I'm typing so you may not want to take just my word for it. Apologies to those whose brilliant insights I may have missed along the way.
Typographically yours,
Sara
