Deep breaths... and here we go:
-There's just a litle too much reality in the ambiguity of Angel's moral code. -Emotions and logic have an uneasy truce most of the time. -Rachael and Riff started talking about justice and whether any punishment a given legal system can come up with could truly be just, or what the concept even means. -Julia terrorized starlings. -Erin provided some very interesting insight on the good/evil/right/wrong/moral/immoral debate by sharing Kohlberg's Stages of Moral Development. Read all about it on p. 9 -We also talked a little about technical virginity. Yeah, I know, but it was actually quite interesting. -Ben--innocent or not? Erin says no--he made a horrible, selfish choice to put a chance at power and immortality ahead of Dawn's life and the welfare of humanity. Matthew was persuaded by Erin's argument, and called Ben an example of evil's banality, which makd loved. -What happened to the Neaderthals--extinction or assimilation? Only your wisdom teeth know for sure. -Sometimes, just living is in and of itself a victory against evil. -More Dru channelling started on pg 11. -How would you dress up Spike? Or Wes? Or... I'm sorry--what was I saying? -Flirting: good. Flirting with chocolate involved: better. -And then there's the elephant in the room: the afternoon/evening's main event. Let me explain. No, is too much: let me sum up. Riff made a comment about sociology, and between the comment itself and his initial apology wound up with his foot so far down his throat his toenail was eaten away by the acid of his stomach. Julia came online swinging and made what Willow did to Warren look like a tender caress--and then she went to work on him. Caraleigh, Lola, Becky and Anne tried to distract us with shiny pretty Spike, while Rachael, Rob, Nan, Matthew and Erin donned their kevlar vests (Matthew's was by Victoria's Secret) and tried to play peacemaker. Riff started apologizing about once every ten posts, and while makd came in and got in a few licks (and not the good kind) of her own in, ultimately she was benevolence itself. Then it seemed like everyone took some deep breaths and things settled back down.
It got said before, but it bears repeating: we're all hanging on to our emotional equilibriums by our fingernails here these days, mostly because of what next Wednesday signifies. As Rachael said so well, we're like a family here, and while none of us is immune to saying stupid things sometimes we can say really fulking stupid things when our guard is down around people we trust. Between the two, we all just gotta try and take that extra moment to reread what's in the little box before we click "post" and check all our air passageways to make sure they're clear of all foot-related parts. And's that all I've got to say 'bout that.
So now I'm going to post this and pray no one starts chucking any rotten fruit my way. But while I'm here, I'll say myself what Erin said earlier for me: let's do our best to be excellent to each other. In the grand scheme of things, the ties we've formed here are a rare and unique gift, and when we each come to our ends will mean far more to us than any of the issues that may divide us.
Peace,
Sara

I almost fell over when I saw I was almost 30 pages behind on the board--do any of you people ever sleep? Thankfully the stuff you talked about last night was kinda boring, so I don't have that much to recap... ;D Just kidding. -Before I forget it again: Anne let us know there's an interview with Joss Whedon in the new issue of EW; Julia warned us there are many declarative sentences in said interview. -There was a whole thing about dressing JM in Speedos. What? Oh, I'm sorry: it was actually two unrelated conversations on how you'd dress up JM and the pros and cons of Speedos on people of varying physiques. Phew. -Then a bunch of folks spent several pages talking about the books they read in h.s. english, what books they think h.s. froshes should read in English class, and how senior English class tended to be much better than freshman. It was actually really interesting--I'd suggest going back and taking a look (starting with page 28 or so) -Survey says: people don't really dig taking surveys. Making life pretty stressful for our Nan as she tries to meet her requisite number of "completes" in her job. -Off of Caraleigh's earlier revelation that she'd flirted with an 18 year-old when she went to buy candy, a few waxed rhapsodic about the mental and marital health benefits of such activites. Here's to you, Mrs. Robinsons. -Rachael jumped into Matthew's lap, but when she realized she'd missed a chance to make a joke about restraints she said she must be losing her touch. Matthew said he'd noticed. -Julia provided links to two fun websites: www.eecs.harvard.edu/~yaz/en/squirrel_fishing.html and www.talk.to/mr.ed-Shanno introduced us to the fearsome shoe gambit. S'cubiefest attendees--keep your eyes peeled for flying footwear. She also revealed that "plastic toys are the most satisfying." Then Shanno and Matthew played pool, with Shanno doing a pretty good job as a ball braker. -Caraleigh provided the website for virtual season six: countylimerick.prohosting.com/ats_nolimits/(no word on spoilers for the s5 finale yet); and a link to cute pics of JM at www.livejournal.com/community/marsters_daily/88492.html#cutid1-Diane had a slight freakout about returning to 40 pages, the state of the pool table, the lack of restraint on the board, the state of the pool table... -This weekend Rachael is attending a family reunion with people she's never met. Moreover, it's in some place called Turlock, which is apparently just south of Purgatory. Should be fun. -Rae and Rob met in RL, which had Matthew beside himself with jealousy. -Excellent news--Sue's dreaded meeting from hell went fine. -Rachael's thinking about buying a hybrid car. Given her vocation, I'm kinda nervous as to what it might be a hybrid of... -Sue noted that TPTB haven't been mentioned on "Angel" for a while, wondering why that might be and if we'll hear anything about them this Wednesday. Branching off of this, Julia wondered if the vision Angel received from Cordelia of his path was of a beginning, and ending or a turning point, and pointed out that the visions don't usually send Angel into death traps. She also gave Matthew a visual to store in his happy place, which at this point requires its own zip code. -Sue, provided a funny story at end of pg. 6--be sure to check it out. And I think that catches us up again. I hope everyone's having a great weekend full of opportunities to observed the S'cubie code of conduct: eschew the badger, embrace the bonobo, enjoy your inner bitca, defy the chicken, assume the IMO, eat some chocolate, and be excellent to each other. Typingly yours, Sara

Only seven pages to catch up on this go-around. My fingers just breathed a sigh of relief. So, among the many thoughts and observations shared on the board since yesterday are: -Yankee losses are always good. -Happy Birthday to David Boreanaz. -Julia clarified her pronouns--it was her cousin who was involved in a 3-way with his elder brothers future and former wife, not JM. I think I liked it better the other way. -Anne gave us a rundown on the history of "snark"--the word itself, not the concept, which probably dates back to, "Sure, like I made you take a bite of the fruit. Twerp." -Lola took part today in a 10k AIDS walk in MN--good for you Lola, and I hope the sun shone on your day. -We've got a growing contingent of "Big Fish" fans. Not to be confused with big Phish fans, although there may be some crossover, I suppose. -Julia provided a link to a Spander story: www.catbones.com/scarecrow-horses/fanfiction.html-Sue posted some far-ranging and always interesting comments on part 172 at the bottom of pg 9, including a nice bit of advice about PWP (which in this case means Posting When Pissed). She also made an excellent point regarding the "killing Ben" debate, observing that no one had any compunction about killing Glory even after they knew it would mean Ben's death as well--Giles merely did it while Ben was the dominant face. -Matthew expressed his admiration and enthusiasm for both parts of "Kill Bill," although he feared he went too far over-the-top in his praise even for QT. Trust me--I don't think it's possible for anything to be too over-the-top for QT. -Rob took a moment to express his love for Diane's avatar. Rob, I'm not sure I'd be advertising that it only took you a moment... -Diane, near tears, confessed that she cheated on her desktop by buying a new laptop. She confirmed it is red in spirit and shaped like a penis. They're just adding more and more functions to laptops these days. -cal provided a link to the JW EW article--no word yet on what it has in the way of spoilers, but as Julia points out Joss has a healthy hatred of 'em so we're probably safe: www.voy.com/14567/9871.html -The issue of the fetish strong enthusiasm for stationery shared by many S'cubies came up again after Patti detailed her nice, relaxing Saturday at home. They discovered that as a side effect some folks have the urge to organize, some to hoard collect. Some just sit at home, stroking their pens... -Caraleigh's little Brittani is graduating today. Given your town's recent loss, I hope all goes as well as it can. -Nan's friend brought her some awesome spaghetti sauce, the description of which had us all drooling. -Shanno had a bout of Patti-itis on pg. 14. And that catches us up on a lazy Sunday afternoon. I hope everyone is enjoying a weekend full of badger eschewing, bonobo embracing, bitca enjoying, chicken defying, IMO assuming, chocolate eating, and all-around excellence. Keyboardingly yours, Sara

There appears to have been a flurry of posting activity since I last logged on. As it's almost time for me to grab some dinner, this'll be another quickie. But as I know that's the way most of you like it, I'm not too worried about it... -We bandied about the pros and cons of correct pronoun usage, ultimately deciding that if omitting pronouns is wrong, we don't want to be right. -Shanno introduced her kids to the delights of "Galaxy Quest," sending Patti into paroxysms of joy. This just in: We think we're the green thingy - Shanno said "raw wood gives me the heebie-jeebies." I'll pause to let you absorb that information. Anyway, for Shanno raw wood is apparently the psychic equivalent of nails on a blackboard. To no one's surprise, no way did Matthew leave that one alone, noting that if this was the case she'd make a poor prostitute. That and the giving out of free samples... -Patti. Patti-itis. Page16. You've been warned. -Julia shared links to gorgeous pictures of her flowers: www.justourpictures.com/roses/aglaia.htmlwww.heirloomroses.com/cgi/browse.cgi?page=item&cat=13&item=216www.veseys.com/store.cfm?product=1795www.justourpictures.com/roses/josephscoat.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/josephscoat.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/ispahan.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/oldblush.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/mutabilis.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/buffbeauty1.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/stanwellperpetual.htmlwww.justourpictures.com/roses/souvdelamalmaison.htmlwww.heirloomroses.com/cgi/browse.cgi?page=item&cat=4&item=9and a link to a song to accompany them: www.preciouslordtakemyhand.com/christianhymns/morninghasbroken.html-Some folks reminisced about "Morning Has Broken" and how much they love it when used as a hymn. Much Cat Stevens love shared. Favorite flowers were also discussed--many happy, pretty thoughts all around, and shockingly none of them had to do with naked Spike. -Diane is still adapting to her new computer. Shanno had laptop envy, while fellow laptop users wanted to know what kind she got: it's an eMachine. Upon hearing that Matthew said a novena for her and urged frequent back-ups. -Some talk of "Troy" and whether any S'cubies had or were going to see it. Many are concerned the movie will be less Homer and more Homer Simpson, but it was acknowledged that the chance to ogle Brad and Orlando is a tough one to pass up. -Matthew deviates from the norm. And he also does origami a little differently than most. -We're all avoiding looking at the walls with the writing on them. Erinland is such a happy little place to be--and we sing the Spike song there all day too. And that's where we are now--singing and skipping happily through Erinland. Join us there, won't you? Trippingly yours, Sara

And a new part to start the week afresh. Seems like as good a time as any to see what we were up to in the last part's waning pages... -Happy Birthday Rachael! -Matthew posted "Heroine Barbarian" from Xena Warrior Princess on pg. 23, along with some awesome footnotes. Guffaws abounded all around. Julia mourned the fact that we'll never see James Marsters and Kevin Smith (Ares) match swagger, subtext and cheekbones. -Thumbs up from Anne, Lola, Patti and Matthew for "O Brother Where Art Thou" and its take on "The Odyssey." Great music too. -Bone folders. Need I say more? See one for yourself at www.dickblick.com/zz129/64/products.asp?param=0&ig_id=853-makd expressed her displeasure that so many retellings of "The Iliad" ignore the primary reason Menelaus went after Helen--she had the power and the prestige. makd also created a thread with links to and info on the con David Boreanaz attended May 20. -prokryote posted some excellent thoughts about Illyria and her development as a character on p.26. Later Anne pointed out that in Tibetan Buddhism, benevolent deities have blue hair. -Thoughts from Pogo:"we have met the enemy, and he is us" and (as paraphrased by Lola) "The greatest gift you get in life is life itself. And you don't know how perfect it is until you realise you're not stuck with it, either." -Matthew told us about the time he put the verbal smackdown on a neo-Nazi. Rob shared the time he unwittingly took $240.75 from some Florida Klansmen, a fact he only discovered after the game. A few days later he donated the entire sum to the United Negro College Fund. Big round of applause for both these wonderful guys. -Patti-itis. Page 28-29. You've been warned. -Caraleigh is justly proud of her new avatar, which she created all by herself. Matthew tried to help her figure out how to get the proportions right, so it's still a work-in-progress. Still, tremendous job Caraleigh. -Spring's guest is making noises about moving out--woo hoo! -Karen's boys are rebels. -Rob misses the rural life, but not the actual farming. -Matthew told us about what his grandfather did during WWII, and let me say this--it was a very, very tough job. The post is on pg. 31 and I encourage everyone to take a look at it. Matthew, I'm very glad you shared and I salute your grandfather and his courage. -Rachael's back, and the family reunion was actually fun--except for discovering there actually is 45 minutes' worth of Turlock. Her sister and BIL are getting a new house, so soon they'll have no more worries about flat tires. No word on whether they'll be flattening the neighbor in question before they leave... -Yes, we all really do tend to turn conversations back on ourselves. -Lola. Patti-itis. Page 34. 'Nuf said. -Vlad reminded us that Spike is Spring and Patti's, but he is available on a rental basis to the rest of us. When Spring read the news that Spike is not her exclusive property... Vlad, it's been nice knowing you, buddy. -Even-numbered Star Trek movies don't suck. There's some dispute about the last one, as it technically was an even-numbered movie but did not feature that number in the title. Vlad and Matthew will be settling the matter with phasers at dawn. And that's where we are on another Monday morning. I hope everyone had a great weekend, and as we continue the countdown until Wednesday just remember to: eschew the badger, embrace the bonobo, enjoy your inner bitca, assume the IMO, defy the chicken, enjoy some chocolate, and be extra-excellent to each other. If all else fails, the gates to Erinland are open 24-7. Stenographically yours, Sara

Been trying to catch up for about an hour now, but the final page keeps scampering away from me... -Murphy hates Nan, foiling her attempts to finish her review yesterday. It was determined that there is no such thing as welcome road construction. -Lots of folks wished our S'cience S'cubie a happy birthday, including Diane and Karen. -makd contributed a link to photos of JM in Amsterdam. log.nu/gotr/index.html-We're all looking for a piece of Spike. -Riff turned into a zombie while cataloging musty journals. Well, at least he'd pass for a zombie extra in a scifi movie... According to Riff, avoiding work is good for your mental health. And since this information comes from an Englishman who works in a library, you know it's gotta be true. -Riff also provided info on a new version of Dr. Who the BBC is filming starring Christopher Ecclestone. Many Numfar-esque dances of joy. -Suspicion is growing that reality tv shows are part of some vast psychology experiment. To quote my man Oz: "Actually, that explains a lot" -Julia posted some very interesting and insightful thoughts on "Power Play" on pg. 4. Be sure to take a look-see. -Erinland has a pool with a nice, broad shallow end. -Lee the Long Lost at last returned to the board, full of great energy and spoiling for a fight--she's already got Spring and Diane lined up as sparring partners. Hugs and mucho joyo all around. You heard it here first: the randomness has returned. -Lola was blessed with an overabundance of perkiness today. No more caffeine for you, missy. She also has her brand spanking new Master name--emphasis on the spanking. -Rachael's trying to figure out why it is she and her ex get along better now than they did when they were together. Many folks tried to offer whatever insight they could, including Karen. Time, distance and less pressure were all suggested as possible reasons, along with fewer issues leaving more space for niceness. Meanwhile Vlad's take on the question on pg. 12 was very, very sweet. -becca's having one of those days when it feels like her brain's on tape delay. I don't know about anyone else, but that'd be an excellent way of describing my state of mind most days... -Big thanks to Erin, Lee, Sandy, and Patti, just for being so nice to me. There, you all got your names in the recap. -Erin posted a Tears for Fears song that reminded her of Wes--you can see it on pg. 13. -The pleas that Matthew write up his family history contine... -And in case you haven't heard, Vlad had a featured role in a recent article about the Jossverse and the Internet; you can read it here: www.mediasharx.com/index.php/news/2068 or in the Articles and Interviews thread. Vlad also posted the entire interview, not just the parts the article excerpted, in the thread as well. Naturally the S'cubies, including Diane and Karen, weren't hesitant to express their love for Vlad. Today is a very, very good day to be a S'cubie...but then, aren't they all? And now I'm posting this before another couple of pages get added while my back is turned. Live the creed: eschew the badger, embrace the bonobo, enjoy your inner bitca, defy the chicken, assume the imo, eat lots of chocolate, and show eternal excellence toward each other. Yours in Scubiedom, Sara

Turned out to be a fairly talkative few hours on the S'cubie board this fine Monday. Let's see what we've got: -Rachael's AHA fellowship application was approved--what an awesome birthday gift for her. Jubilation abounded in her wake after she shared the good news. Shanno's style of congratulations, meanwhile, made Matthew's happy place grow just a little bigger. Speaking of which: cyberlesbian pain-inflictor is our new Master name in waiting... -Caraleigh continued to hone her avatar, giving it a nice Modigliani-esque feel. -If Spring can't go to S'cubiefest Lee has offered to go to her house and kick her butt there--'cause that's the kind of gal Lee is. -Poor cal wasn't feeling too chatty today, but she was with us in spirit. And later contributed nicely to our David-palooza of avatars on pg 19--many, many happy thoughts were inspired by that delightful visual. -A nice, relaxing day in Erinland. Speaking of which, the founder herself asked if anyone knows what the "sweet" level in Ghirardelli's double-chocolate chips is--are they like a semi-sweet or bittersweet? -Gentleman John stopped by to say hello--Friday is the birthday of his miracle baby, and he's stoked for S'cubiefest. -Spring, Lee and cal started running around in circles chasing each other, trying to pull one another's hair. You remember Xander and Harmony's fight? It was like that, only less girly. -Folks are having some weird Buffyverse dreams lately--although so far no reports of anything involving a man with a plate of cheese... -Lee serenaded Erin after Erin pointed Lee's way toward finding a rerun of today's "Regis & Kelly," which featured David Boreanaz. Imagine if they'd actually done publicity like this for the show DURING ITS ACTUAL RUN. *deep breaths, deep breaths* Okay Erin--can I come back in now? Please? -Sqeak squeaken squeak squeakity. I think I got that right--the declensions and conjugations are a complete and utter bitch to keep straight. Oh, and FYI: Shanno's computer squirrels are not Spanish. -Lee got nothing done at work today. You should be different from the rest of us...why? -Diane assured Lee of how much she'd missed her. -Rae contributed an update about S'cubiefest Saturday mini-golf to the S'cubiefest thread. -And Matthew, Shanno and Sara temporarily formed a mutual admiration society. I believe Patti will be running the pool to place bets on how long it lasts... And here we are. Past my quitting time, I might add. The things I do for my fellow S'cubies. Now, repeat after me: eschew the badger, embrace the bonobo, enjoy your inner bitca, assume the IMO, defy the chicken, eat some chocolate, and always be excellent to each other. Your ever humble scribe, Sara

One more for the road--and to give myself less work in the morning. Wrapping up my Monday, I've noted that: -Upon seeing that both Erin and Gentleman John were using Gunn avatars, Diane noted that we may need some Gunn control fairly soon. This sent Matthew to his happy place with a visual of Fred in leather toting a riding crop. -Some folks were pretty upset that Spring will be getting her Buffy season 6 DVD set from Amazon next week, as they're being told much later arrival dates. -When doesn't cal find Spike adorable? Um...on the days that the earth rotates backwards? -Shanno sent us to this website www.janicke.com/kcspeech.htm to prove she doesn't have an accent. -Meanwhile Anne contributed this link www.ghirardelli.com/products_bakechip2.html to answer Erin's pressing chocolate question. When the issue of long-term chocolate storage came up, most S'cubies found the phrase itself to be an oxymoron--apparently this is not a problem our S'cubies have had. Shanno may have won for "line of the day"; when Lola said, "Chocolate storage is not a large problem with me either," Shanno added: "Nor me. It goes straight onto my ass and stays there." -We're wondering what Illyria's reaction to her thrashing at Hamilton's hands is going to be: I'm going to take a stand and say not good. -Rachael had the bestest birthday ever. -Lola had an excellent day for her AIDS walk, and her group raised $1100 for an event that took in over $500,000. Many congratulations for Lola came from everyone on the board--you did something awesome Lola. -Erin provided a nice jolt of chocolate soft-porn on pg. 26. Those of you who are so inclined may want to have cigarettes handy for after you read her post. -Rachael and Sara had slight meltdowns after seeing this week's TV Guide, but through mutual support and a hit of Erin's chocolate were able to come down safely off the ledge and back into the safe confines of Erinland. -Julia gave an entertaining rundown of all of the present indicative tenses for Matthew on page 27. -Rob has this totally out there idea that the Fang Gang, in order to defeat Hamilton, should work together AS A TEAM. I know, I know--we didn't think he had that kind of rebellious radical streak in him. Just calm down there Rob. Meanwhile, Rachael took the idea of all that testosterone energy in one spot to a somewhat Wednesday place. Or, for Lola, an everyday place. -Erinland truly is paradise on earth. Rachael was concerned about balls bouncing in sync, but Erin assured us that'll only happen on the days that James Marsters, David Boreanaz, J. August Richards and Alexis Denisof visit Erinland together. -makd. Patti-tis. Page 29. And it's a doozy--she addresses posts by Diane, Lee, Riff, Erin, Rachael, Patti, Matthew, another Lee, then echoes John's congrats for Rachael, asked WTF about the squirrels and acorns, responded to two more posts by Matthew, and eetahed something Karen posted. This is all on one page, people--only a lone post by Rob prevented her from owning the page outright. Then on page 30 she snuck in one last post on the top, a grin off of Shanno's LotD. The whole thing truly is a wonder to behold. -Not to be outdone, Lola made her own valiant attempt at a similiar streak on page 30, commenting on posts from Spring, Diane, and Shanno, but then makd muscled her way back in. Her momentum broken, Lola never recovered. Patti tried to pick up the slack toward the end of the page, but I'm afraid it was a lost cause. -Regrouping, Patti took another run at getting up a head of steam on page 31--unfortunately her efforts were foiled by posts from Julia, Rae, and (whoops) myself. -Rob and makd joined the chorus of love for Vlad and his words about the board. -Lola has written the official Erinland meditation. Revel in its glory on page 30. -Patti reports that, as far as S'cubiefest goes, and I quote, "Vlad is doing all sorts of technical magic to make sure all the folk who CAN'T come...sorta can..." Vlad, I think I speak for all of the attendees when I say: I can't wait to meet you. -I encouraged all and sundry to check out the antics of Foamy the Squirrel at www.illwillpress.com/vault.html. Start with Foamy's Rant (second column from the right, third square down) and be sure to hide the kids and coworkers if applicable--rated PG-13 for strong language. Oh look--I've caught up to...myself. Huh. Guess I'll leave you fine folks for the evening. May all your dreams be pleasant ones of the wondrous beauty that is Erinland, where the men are hunky, the sun is shining, and everyone lives by these simple rules: eschew the badger, embrace the bonobo, enjoy your inner bitca, defy the chicken, assume the IMO, eat some chocolate, and above all else always be most excellent to each other. Blissfully yours, Sara

Although we haven't filled that many pages since last I 'capped, it made sense to me to post something finishing up the last part so we can start fresh with our brand-new one. Wrapping up the few final pages of part 174, we find:
-Spring. Patti-itis. Page 32. She noted, and I think we'd all concur, it was a good day in S'cubieland: media coverage, posts by Lee and Gentleman John, the article linked on slayage.com, and four new members. -Caraleigh posted a link (http://www.livejournal.com/users/estepheia/315070.html) noting that JM is going to audition for Harry Dresden. Consensus was that anything keeping JM visible is a good thing. Meanwhile, someone in Caraleigh's neighborhood set a wet hay bale on fire behind their school--the smell continues to linger, and her house reeks. Grr arrgh. -"Emperor's New Groove"--funny flick. And if anyone's hesitant, consider the cast: David Spade, John Goodman, Eartha Kitt (!) and Patrick Warbuton (Puddy from "Seinfeld," The Tick in the live-action version of the cartoon). And Tom Jones belts out a couple of tunes. Trust us--it's a kick. -betsyAB noted that marmalade cats shed a lot. Vlad was surprised, as he assumed they'd be too sticky to shed, and suggested buttering them. -Matthew-Patti-itis. Page 33. -Conversation about Caraleigh's daughter's music class led to a trip down amnesia lane and some fond recollections of that stuff from the 80s loosely called "music." Consensus: Shanno was much cooler as a kid than Matthew's older brother. -Rachael saw "Troy." Her thumbs-up review can be summed up thusly: nekkid Brad Pitt pretty. Orlando Bloom with bow and arrow pretty. Cool fighting scenes. Gail also gave it a good review, but she was more enamored of Eric Bana as Hector and also singled out Sean Bean, Peter O'Toole and Saffron Burrows (Andromache, Hector's wife) for praise. IE she paid attention to the acting. -Diane's early-morning poetic contribution, as she succumbed to a bout of Patti-itis on pg 35: I blearily log on in the early morn and the first thing I see is cookie porn. Now alas, I have to dash I'll await more pastry slash. She also suggested moving the Thrall Room to Erinland. -becca noted another strike against Ben as an innocent bystander--it was he who summoned the quellar demon to kill the folks Glory had made crazy. Julia noted that as the crazies were also the ones who ended up building the tower, perhaps making Ben's action more neutral than evil. Meanwhile Shanno tossed in the possibility that since quellar demons locked in on the crazy--like, say, Glory--perhaps Ben was indirectly attempting suicide. -Dignity is overrated. -Julia got eight hours of sleep Monday night--let there be rejoicing throughout the land.
And thus endeth another part. So sit back, relax, and stroll right on into part 175 and the paradise-on-earth that is Erinland. Enjoy your Tuesdays, all.
Eschew the badger, embrace the bonobo, enjoy your inner bitca, assume the IMO, defy the chicken, eat some chocolate, and be excellent to each other.
Scribblingly yours,
Sara

Hah--made you look. ;D 17 pages... not too bad. I can handle this. Observe: -There was a moment of panic when Part 174 appeared to be no more, but it's an illusion folks: just open the part and you'll see the pages in all their rambling glory. -Shanno went to a Fred & Ginger/Burns & Allen/Hall & Oates place this morning, which led to more music talk, which led to a sharing of song lyrics/titles we've mangled or misheard in years past--a discussion that wove in and out of the conversation throughout the day. Meanwhile Diane shared her spouse's unusual and funny alternate song lyrics, Rachael shared one of her mis-hears that had the S'cubies stumped as to what the original song was, while trivia-obsessed Anne pointed us to two websites filled with such misinterpretations: www.rulefortytwo.com/mondegreens.htm and www.rulefortytwo.com/mondegreenhall.htm -Karen was queen of the non sequitur today, and Matthew her voluntary king. -Spring noted that Willow always seemed to find the dead bodies. -Shanno shared an urban legend about hotel room key cards that Anne kindly debunked for us. -It was the last day of school for Caraleigh's daughters, commencing that special time of year when parents and children get to spend far too much time together: school vacation. It seems that many moms would merrily sell said children for 30 minutes of mental privacy--and maybe a shower. -Becky has a "sorta job" for next year and is "making toward the day when my (sort of) job is completely budgeted out of existence." Yay? -Trent Reznor and Rachael share a birthday--proof of a balancing force in the universe. -Great band name: Mummified Penguins -Shanno and Erin started smoking pot way before they started having sex; Rachael vice versa. Shanno has since given up both, a situation Erin and Matthew have offered to help rectify. See if you can guess which one Matthew wants to help with. -Sue had a terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad morning between dealing with her dishwasher and fending off the stupidities of some PTAers. Unfortunately the use of a 2x4 was not part of her rebuttal, although clearly it should have been. S'cubies offered what support and empathy they could, making up a nice, relaxing spot for her in Erinland. -Those "squees" you heard earlier were prompted by the news that "Repossessions" has been updated. -I'm confused: you can either go to Erinland for asylum, go into the asylum in Erinland, or Erinland is an asylum, full stop. Question is: does it even matter? -Spring's review of "Shadow" is posted for your reading pleasure. -Linda, after pondering a few questions, offered an interpretation of events in "Power Play" which may have established her as one of Erinland's most native children. -Len returned, with news of a baby boy born 5/4/04. Much joy and congratulations were offered by his fellow S'cubies, not to mention more than a few "welcome backs." The pros and cons of various child-rearing manuals were discussed by S'cubies who'd been there, done that, have the puked-upon t-shirt. -Erin offered her entry for "Social Theory Porn of the Day" on page 10. Read it...if you dare. -Julia put a sachet of roses in the pool, evoking evenings in a Persian garden for most and allergy attacks from Anne. -Julia and Shanno took a brief detour to revel in love of all things Sting. -Riff goes to work on the Hogwarts Express, and can't understand why we all consider "optimistic" an outlook he sees as "realistic." -Gentleman John stopped by 'cause he was feeling all nostalgic with his daughter's birthday coming up on Friday. -Riff asked about the Thrall Room, which Patti, Rachael and Anne were more than happy to describe. Rachael also volunteered to show him around the place, which meant Shanno had to do a quick clean-up while Anne put in fresh video tapes. -And many S'cubies are temporarily changing the name of their location in their profiles to display where they are currently residing, at least on an emotional/spiritual level. There you go--17 pages distilled for your skimming pleasure. So hop aboard the train to Erinland, grab a frozen cocktail, and enjoy the bliss. And to make sure your visa is never revoked, just follow these few simple rules: Eschew the badger. Embrace the bonobo. Enjoy your inner bitca. Assume the IMO. Defy the chicken. Eat some chocolate. And always be excellent to each other. Yours in deniability, Sara

Nature's first green is gold, Her hardest hue to hold. Her early leaf's a flower; But only so an hour. Then leaf subsides to leaf. So Eden sank to grief, So dawn goes down to day. Nothing gold can stay. Had that poem on my mind this morning... Okay. Let's see what we've all been up to since my last recap yesterday afternoon. Looks like it was a somewhat subdued afternoon and evening on the board, but we still covered a lot of ground: -There is no wrong way to eat Nutella. -Sue shared a funny list of new dog breeds on pg. 18. -Check out what happens if you Google Rob Sorenson. No, you perverts--I mean internet Googling. -Riff's tour of the Thrall Room ended with warnings to stay out of hot tub and to avoid the broom closet, especially if Matthew is around. -Anne had a day o' frustration with daughters Emily & Kitty, but rumors that she posted their pictures on eBay were greatly exaggerated. -Lola's meditation/affirmation is so far turning out to be a saving grace for her fellow S'cubies. -It's official: group therapy starts tomorrow. -Nan is actively seeking new & more reliable/consistent employment. Best of luck to you, Nan -Rachael had some writer's block issues, but she managed to break out the bulldozer and plow her way through them. -makd fought valiantly against another Patti-itis outbreak on pg. 23. -Check out Caraleigh's brand new avatar--cool stuff, huh? -Those of us on the east coast drove Rachael nuts with our vague but tantalizing posts about "Gilmore Girls." Good times... -rae is having difficulties with her cats; Rachael, Lola and betsyAB tried to help with some encouragement and advice. -Lola provided a Giles soft porn meditation on page 25. Just try not to overload the server, okay gang? -Julia made sure the fanfic methadone clinics would be available 24/7 over the next week or so and that the trays in the Thrall Room are fully stocked. -Julia and Rachael noted that Randy Johnson pitched a perfect game yesterday, followed by Patti posting about the Pacers basketball win last night. Yes, Patti posted about sports. Keep your eyes peeled skyward for flying pigs and watch the Weather Channel for news of a severe temperature drop in a very warm location. -Our beloved man-whore Matthew was nursing a toothache last night--I sincerely hope today finds you feeling a lot better. -Congrats to betsyAB on achieving Master S'cubiedom. When others offered similiar felicitations Rob suggested perhaps the S'cubie women should be called Mistress S'cubie. Rachael said we'd all rush right out and get riding crops. Rob prayed she wasn't kidding. -Shanno. Patti-itis. Page 28 -Our Aussie friend Kerrie is getting screwed over by the network that airs "Angel" in her neck of the woods. 'Cause none of us knows what that feels like... -becca provided links for more information about mummies and their uses: www.straightdope.com/columns/020222.html and www.forteantimes.com/articles/124_mummy.shtml. becca also proposed a very interesting theory as to why the Master's beloved prophecy from season one could in fact have been referring to Illyria. I'm liking the sounds of this, becca. -Nan's review is in and should be posted for your reading pleasure any time now. She also reports that "Repossession" has been updated to part 109: lazuli.kat.users.btopenworld.com/repossession.htm-Lola, in the midst of a Patt-itis run on page 29, gave a thumbs up to the JM movie "Winding Roads" that Barbalurina lent her. JM--very yummy and sweet. So if anyone wants to have the movie mailed to them, just drop Lola a line and she'll send it on its way. And I believe that catches us up on this very momentous Wednesday. Be strong, take deep breaths, read Lola's affirmation (reprinted on page 20), and stay close. We're here. Yours in Jossdom, Sara

Okay, after a slow morning things seem to be picking up around here. Let's get everyone up to speed:
-Spring summed up what a lot of us are thinking with this eloquent post:
-Lasagna without cheese--not lasagna. More like toxic waste. -Diane updated us on all of the neato cleaning tools to be found in the Thrall Room broom closet. If only we could mass-produce them. She also continues to maintain an uneasy truce between the Englishman and the Cat. -Dean has turned into an asshat. Luke & Lorelei--yay!. And the good news is it's unlikely one of them will die a horrible death in next season's premiere. Watching a couple on television be happy for a while--what a radical concept. -Jasmine and Principal Wood were on "24" last night, while Darla and Jayne were on NCIS. The Buffyverse is everywhere... -becca has stocked in important supplies for after her "Angel" viewing--tough decision as to whether to test the ice cream now or be surprised later. -Spring and Gentleman John shared the love for "The Temptations" tv movie. -"Too Many Connections..." is simply an unacceptable sight today. Meanwhile, HWSNBN seemed to be cranky today as well. -becca bailed on a disappointing book. -Matthew worried about losing his mind. Did you even have one to lose? -As Rachael said, there's always oil on Wednesdays. -Real world? So unnecessary. -Check out Shanno's pic of Willow and Spike tongue-to-tongue on page 4. -A bunch of us lapsed back into squirrel talk, adding some new vocabulary (squick and squee) while we were at it. Squirrel is a fluid language... -Matthew stole Shanno's acorn. Yes, I think most of us had assumed she'd lost it a long time ago. -The broom closet needs to be cleaned out...again. -Nan's review is posted for your reading enjoyment. -Sue suggested using the ratings thread as a backup in case the active discussion thread freezes. Good idea Sue.
And I think I'll post this recap before it gets to be too many pages since the last one, especially at the rate we're filling them right now. Stay strong and keep to the code:
Eschew the badger. Embrace the bonobo. Enjoy your inner bitca. Assume the IMO. Defy the chicken. Eat some chocolate. And always be excellent to each other.
Yours in S'cubiedom,
Sara

Our posting rate noticeably sped up as the day went along--a sign of nerves, perhaps? At any rate, topics were varied and far-ranging, with plenty of smut mixed in for your reading enjoyment. Highlights included:
-becca suffered from an onslaught of klutziness, a common S'cubie affliction, that resulted in a pasta burn. Hope it feels better soon. -We veered off into a zoological discourse on the faster than the speed of light mongoose. It's legendary, of course, because no one has seen one. becca wondered if it was related to the Ambiguous Puzuma. -CRS disease--it affects all of us. -Wendy returned to hugs from all her friends -Diane unleashed The Full Monty Smiley, while Erin provided a spanking. -Too Many Connections -Matthew's owie still hurts. Damn you, Mr. Dentist! -Shanno contributed a good one: "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming--WOW-- What A Ride." Rachael's still looking for someone to ride. -Riff describe the board as going pear-shaped. Not realizing this is British for wonky, the team sprang into demon research mode. When they were done Rachael offered to debrief Karen, who gladly accepted. -Chocolate is a better bait than golden apples. Unless your name is Atalanta, of course... -Avoid the cigarettes on the silver tray. Upon hearing this, Shanno quarantined herself; Matthew prepared a break-in, Rachael and Sara prepared to break head, and Shanno, hearing Matthew, broke out and dragged him away. Huh. -Diane unleashed her inner bitca on Amazon. The results were promising. -Several of us are prepared to consider "Smile Time" the series finale, with the subsequent episodes becoming a bad dream/alternate dimension detour by ME. -Anne waged a valiant war against the gopher in her lawn, but finally withdrew and ceded the field of battle. -Wonkiness on the board? Fuggedaboutit--there's nothing we can't face if we're together. Except for bunnies.
And I'm posting this before another two pages get filled on me. In the meantime, keep to the code:
Eschew the badger Embrace the bonobo Enjoy your inner bitca Assume the IMO Defy the chicken Eat some chocolate And be excellent to each other.
Yours in Erindom,
Sara

I'm not feeling remarkably articulate right now, so I'll just get right to it:
-The S'cubies channeled OMWF -Linda provided some excellent insights about Spike and his central role in PP on page 22. -Anne's daughter found her book, "Lord of the Flies." Question is--since she deals with teenage boys on a daily basis, will she even bat an eyelash at the antics of the "Flies" boys. Riff wondered what "Lady of the Flies" would be like--Vlad assured him he was in the midst of it. -Special offer from the Friends of Vlad--for $20 you too can receive an autographed 8x10 glossy of "the photo" and a special invitation to sit at his dinner table at S'cubiefest Friday night. Hurry--supplies are limited. -Rachael asked if cleaning up computer desktop=vacuuming to avoid studying. Hell yes. -We had some obscure John Lennon quotage that went zipping right past my head. -Matthew assured Riff that when Rachael is good, she's good--but when she's bad she's better. Rachael tantalized our man whore by implying she might be very bad later tonight... -rae's avatar and quote almost made me cry. -rae opened the discussion thread for tonight's episode with an absolutely stunning, eloquent, and beautiful opening worthy of the occassion. Awesome, awesome job rae. -makd contributed her version of "Thanks for the Memories"--really well done, makd.
And so here we are, the hour at hand, trying to come to some kind of terms with the end of an era. Since I have no words right now to convey what I'm feeling, I think instead I'll close with something Joss might find appropriate--what many consider to be Shakespeare's farewell to the theater, from The Tempest:
Our revels now are ended, These are actors, as I foretold you, Were all spirits, and are melted into air, Into thin air. And like the baseless fabric of this vision, The cloud capp'd towers, the gorgeous palaces, The solemn temples, the great globe itself. Yea, all which it inherit shall dissolve, And like this insubstantial pageant faded, Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff, as dreams are made of, And our little life is rounded, With a sleep.
Yours,
Sara

I may have my moments of being fairly decent at stringing words together, but not even on my most eloquent day could I possibly summarize this part in a way that does justice to the gamut of thoughts and emotions expressed therein. So instead, at Julia's suggestion, I simply went and collected all the poems and songs various S'cubies quoted as a way of trying to express some of what they were feeling when their own words failed them:
makd's own tribute, borrowed from Thanks for the Memories:
Thanks for the memory Of things i can't forget Spike and Angel on a jet Our wond'rous weeks writ by writer geeks And vegas and roulette How lucky we were
And thanks for the memory those evenings of TV Cordy in a bikini She had a pad with Dennis there And Wes would steep the tea, how cozy it was
Now since The WB's no, we wake up Alone on a gray morning-after We long for the sound of your laughter And then they'll see the laugh's on them ptui to the WB!
But thanks for the memory Each episode a thrill We've been through the mill We've lived a lot and learned a lot The WB loved you not and still
We'll miss you so much
Thanks for the memory Of Gunn and Fred and Wes fighting at their best Even in Pylea - keeping Groo close to the vest Away from all the demon priests How sunny it was
Thanks for the memory Of demons you destroyed Banter we enjoyed Tonight the way things look We need a book by Sigmund Freud How brainy he was
Gone are those evenings - those Wednesdays, Together we'd watch a great show But now we begin with TNT and tapes And wish that the frog was watching, too
Gone is our repentant vamp, our Angel Our hero, our champion, our guy Together we'd watch a great show We followed him around the tube, and watched him - then we sighed - how lucky we were.
I know it's a fallacy That grown men never cry Baby, that's a lie We had our bed of roses But forgot that roses die And thank you so much

Sara, from The Tempest

Gail, from The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkein
Out of doubt, out of dark to the day's rising I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing. To hope's end I rode and to heart's breaking: Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!
===============
Diane, from A Midsummer Night's Dream
If we shadows have offended, Think but this, and all is mended, That you have but slumber'd here While these visions did appear. And this weak and idle theme, No more yielding but a dream, Gentles, do not reprehend: if you pardon, we will mend: And, as I am an honest Puck, If we have unearned luck Now to 'scape the serpent's tongue, We will make amends ere long; Else the Puck a liar call; So, good night unto you all. Give me your hands, if we be friends, And Robin shall restore amends
===============
Becky, from Wordsworth's Ode: Intimations of Immortality
Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting; The soul that rises with us, our life's star, Hath had elsewhere its setting, And cometh from afar; Not in entire forgetfulness, And not in utter nakedness, But trailing clouds of glory do we come...
===============
Sara, from Wordsworth's Ode: Intimations of Immortality
What though the radiance which was once so bright Be now for ever taken from my sight, Though nothing can bring back the hour Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower; We will grieve not, rather find Strength in what remains behind; In the primal sympathy Which having been must ever be; In the soothing thoughts that spring Out of human suffering; In the faith that looks through death, In years that bring the philosophic mind.
And O ye Fountains, Meadows, Hills, and Groves, Forebode not any severing of our loves! Yet in my heart of hearts I feel your might; I only have relinquish'd one delight To live beneath your more habitual sway. I love the brooks which down their channels fret, Even more than when I tripp'd lightly as they; The innocent brightness of a new-born Day Is lovely yet; The clouds that gather round the setting sun Do take a sober colouring from an eye That hath kept watch o'er man's mortality; Another race hath been, and other palms are won. Thanks to the human heart by which we live, Thanks to its tenderness, its joys, and fears, To me the meanest flower that blows can give Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears.
===============
Becky, William Ernest Henley's Invictus
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud. Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.
===============
Becky, from Tennyson's Ulysses
Tho' much is taken, much abides; and tho' We are not now that strength which in old days Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are, One equal temper of heroic hearts, Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
===============
becca, from Ovid's Metamorphoses
Nothing in the entire universe ever perishes, believe me, but things vary and adopt a new form. The phrase 'being born' is used for beginning to be something different from what one was before, while 'dying' means ceasing to be the same. Though this thing may pass into that, and that into this, yet the sum of things remains unchanged.

John G., "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday" (From "Cooley High")
How do I say goodbye to what we had? The good times that made us laugh Outweigh the bad. I thought we'd get to see forever But forever's gone away It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
I don't know where this road Is going to lead All I know is where we've been And what we've been through. If we get to see tomorrow I hope it's worth all the wait It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.
And I'll take with me the memories To be my sunshine after the rain It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday. And I'll take with me the memories To be my sunshine after the rain It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday.

Julia, "Not Fade Away" Original lyrics by Buddy Holly; (The Grateful Dead recorded a version of Holly's tune, making minor changes to the verbiage and omitting the third verse. Word has it it's the GD version of the song that inspired the episode's title.) I’m a-gonna tell you how it’s gonna be you’re gonna give your love to me I wanna love you night and day you know my love a-not fade away a-well, you know my love a-not fade away
My love a-bigger than a cadillac I try to show it and you drive a-me back your love for me a-got to be real for you to know just how I feel a love for real not fade away
I’m a-gonna tell you how it’s gonna be you’re gonna give your love to me a love to last a-more than one day a love that’s love - not fade away a well, a-love that’s love - not fade away

Julia, Jefferson Airplane's "Mau Mau"
1. Mau Mau TOP NOTE
Put your old ladies back into bed Your old men back in their graves Cover their ears so they can't hear us sing Cover their eyes so they can't see us play Get out of the way Let the people play We're gonna get down on you Come alive all over you Dancin' down into your town Tyrannosaurus Rex was destroyed before By a furry little ball that crawled along The primeval jungle floor And he stole the eggs of the dinosaur
CLOSE YOUR EYES & CREATE THE SOUND OPEN YOUR HAN DS & REBUILD THE GROUND
We are egg snatchers Flashin' sunshine children Diamond thieves You unleash the dogs Of a grade B-movie star governor's war While you sit in the dark Insane with the fear of dying We'll all ball in your parks insane with the flash of living
I AM ALIVE I AM HUMAN I WILL BE ALIVE AGAIN
So drop your fuckin' bombs Burn your demon babies I WILL BE ALIVE AGAIN The rabid lover - feelin' the starch in your grin Callin' for acid cocaine and grass And receiving your homemade gin
PUSH THE BUTTON PULL THE SWITCH CUT THE BEAM C'MON MAKE IT MARCH
Sign me up as a diplomat - my only office is the park
You need to be out before you come in And after you come to go In the midst of Yang is a smaller part of Yin And when it happens you know -
THE DAWN COMES HEY DICK
Whatever you think of us is totally irrelevant Both to us now and to you We are the present We are the future You are the past Pay your dues and get outta the way 'Cause we're not the way you used to be When you were very young We're something new We don't quite know what it is Or particularly care We just do it - You gotta do it
Open your eyes there's a new word a-coming Open your eyes there's a new world today Open your hearts people are lovin' Open it all we're here to stay
OPEN THAT DOOR
