I thought most of this was great - lots of history and a love story in the middle and gorgeous sets and a musical number that they somehow managed to make have plot stuff in. And Daleks. And them saying much the same about humans as the Doctor says about Daleks.
But... the central new development? Lame.
Also, while Daleks is scary, Daleks surrounded by pigmen somehow cease to be scary. and vaguely cthuloid businessmen could possibly be scary, but are not, not, not Daleks. So they aren't scary in a Dalek way. And if Daleks aren't about racial purity what are they about?
So, lame.
yet pretty.
It's possible next week will unlame it. Never know. Shall see.

Well, it's interesting, and feels unfinished...that's the bad part about not seeing them for the first time on DVD; the two parters are harder to judge on their own. It does seem like an interesting development, that they have taken the next step beyond the human/Dalek hybrids the Emperor created. But you're right; right now they are less scary without their metal shells...

Showgirls... in the 20's? '30s? Sounds like a pig. It is a pig! Is that like that fake alien from the WWIIII episode? Credits. Statue of Liberty. So good they named it twice. 1930. Hoovervilles. Hooverville justice. Truly equal society. How can they build the Empire State Building while people are starving? I have a feeling we're going to find out. The Daleks are behind it all. And they've got PigMinions now. Wonder how the Empire State Building is to their advantage. Now that people are missing, because they leave their belongings behind. Why doesn't the Doctor try asking the reporter who wrote the article? It's a jellyfish. Or a baby Dalek. Those things. They're making a giant Dalek? Progress. Experiments. So that's why those people were abducted. Dalek cult. Never trust a traitor, not even one you create. [/Dune] Abducted men --> PigMinions? Like with the Cyberman. Run away! Run away! In the dressing room again. I know some guys are just pigs, but not my Lazlo. Have to keep going. Like the Doctor. So Martha *is* sweet on the Doctor. Oh, I should have guessed; he's into musical theater. Hope keeps you going. Tulip still on the dressing table. so it's sort of like Phantom of the Opera. That was hysterical. And more than a little sexual. (ref: the Dalek swallowing up the guy). Theater again. Like with Shakespeare. Artificial. Ah, the PigMinion in the sewer was Lazlo. The Doctor has a stethescope. The Doctor realizes. They always survive, while I loose everything. {{{The Doctor}}} Lazlo, but he's not completely transformed. Martha meets the Daleks. How do they determine "high" and "low" intelligence? Birth. So... A Dalek-Human hybrid. OK then.

So I guess the "this is just for one trip" thing got dropped well and completely in the last episode? OK, then.
Also, the guy from the Hooverville was named Solomon, which I missed. His breaking the loaf in half was a King Solomon reference. (got this from some one in lj-land, didn't come up with it myself.)

In order to do that they must sacrifice some racial purity, it appears.

Cockroach Daleks, just never totally die, eh? Pigman?! ?!! !!! Oh how very very fun! I mean, creepy, but fun. Oooh, depression era. Hoovervilles. Interesting historical setting. Not many people remember/talk about the Hooverville cities. Leader guy in the Hooverville, rousing call of coming together to fight in the Great War. Yeah, there were lots of veterans in the Hoovervilles. Huh. The top of the unfinished Empire State Building looks like a Dalek in the architect sketch. Well, and that's appropriate for this ep, yes? People are vanishing - some kind of experiment. Down the sewers they go. The Doctor has his "I'm very angry with you" face on for the guy sending them off to maybe get killed. Heee! "It's gone off, whatever it is. Aaaand you've got to pick it up." ;D Huh. So they are trying to make the building look like a Dalek. They're putting Dalek bumps on it. Ooooh. The cult of Skaro or Skalo or Skaros or whatever that was. We saw them before. They were different, designed to think differently, weren't they? And there's only a few, yes? They've been controlling the builder guy. Want the Empire State up fast. Because it's gonna be so high? Maybe to beam something out or to collect signals or something? Awwwww. Poor little piggie. Sad sad little pigman. Doctor gonna be all helpful and then . . . lots of pigmen! Run! Run from the pigmen! ;D ;D ;D Oh noes! The pigmen got what's his name! Frank! Pigmen got Frank. Are they gonna make him into a pigman or just kill/eat him or what? Maybe bring him to "the experiment", whatever that is? "I know some guys are just pigs, but not my Lazlo." Heee! Oh, Tallulah, Tallulah. I think he's more "piggy" now than you think. ;D "I let them take Frank because I was scared." Well, who wouldn't have been? You were brave to go down there in the first place, and you did turn back for him once, but ultimately it was his decision to try and hold off the pigmen while the others got away. "Oh. I shold have realised. He's interested in musical theater." Hee! Hmmmm. Is pig!Lazlo bringing her a rose everyday still? Oh. Now Hoovertown guy (Sol? Sam? Something?) is going to fight back. Have them take up arms, prepare to fight. Keep others from being grabbed by pigmen or try to get the others back from pigmen? Because he feels guilty over the other guy. And because now he knows what's been happening. And because he is always the "we need to stick together" guy. The "final experiment". "We need your flesh." Well, that's just ewwww! "If we are supreme, why are we not victorious." Well, it's just plain scary when the Daleks start getting sensible like that. Ah! Yes, the cult was made for a reason - they "exist to iimagine new ways". So, by being not as rigid as standard Daleks, they can perhaps find ways to defeat the Doctor and so on. Eeep! "We must adapt to survive." (Very unusual Dalek idea. Even the other "special" Daleks are having trouble with that thought.) Gonna sacrifice himself. Ewwww! He eated the guy! "Girls. It's showtime." Cut to Doctor, getting to work. Heeee! Oooh. It's like . . . a half pig guy. Lazlo maybe? Martha! Go behind the curtains, you silly! Oh noes! The pigman has Martha! Oh and of course Tallulah is now running around the sewers in spangles and fur. ;D "No no no no. They survived. Why do they always survive when I lose everything." "We must evolve." Contrasted by "they made me a monster". (I'm flashing on a Kids in the Hall sketch now . . . ;D ) Ah. But can she still love pig!Lazlo? "What have they done to you." I think she can, at least a bit. "They'll kill you!" "If I don't stop them, they'll kill everyone." Well, he's right about that. They're separating the "superior" intelligence from the not. Making pigmen slaves out of the "not" and taking the others for their "final experiment". Is the final experiment to eat all of the special ones, absorb them and "adapt"? Martha is "superior" intelligence. Well, we all knew that. "You can kiss me later. You too, Frank, if you like." ;D Boy, they're just handing out the goodies to the slash fans right and left, aren't they? Martha, getting all dominant tone and saying "report". Which gives the Daleks the perfect chance to be classic Evil Villian and tell us their dastardly plan. Evolve a life outside the shell. The children of (?) will walk again. Hmmm. "I am a human Dalek. I am your future." Well. That's some crappy future. EEeeeeepsome scenes from next week! OK, have to run away now, but I'll be back to see what others had to say about the ep.

Is that Sec's thinking, perhaps?

That's the thing about a near-perfect concept like the Daleks - anything new can really only diminish it. It has, however, been normal for the Daleks to create slave races. This allows for: a display of the Daleks' utter lack of respect for any life but their own; a display of the Dalek's status as genius genetic engineers. It also allows for: people with hands who can pick things up for the Daleks; an excuse for the Daleks to leave a planet's population alive for dramatic reasons.

Of course, his ploy wouldn't have worked for a loaf of bread, and, erm... ;D
