OK, that was just, you know, awesome. I love how each of the strands of the episodes previous (the Doctor as human, the watch, the Face of Boe's words) have fit in together so perfectly, and not precisely in the way I would have imagined. I love Derek Jacoby anyway...but his befuddlement is so well played, providing clues to his real identity that were subtle and yet inescapable once we knew the full story. Jack and the Doctor's conversation...learning what happened after 200,100; why Jack might have been so dark and so sad by the time he got to the 20th century. Calling the Doctor on being "more cheeky." And JOHN SIMM! Woo hoo! Such a perfect match for the energy that David Tennant brought to the new Doctor; even paralleling Nine to Ten's regeneration in so many ways: "New voice...that's different." Even better, transforming into a Northern accented Doctor as Nine regenerated into Ten away from that. Brilliant. He's like Ten's dark twin. JOHN SIMM! Sorry, still excited. *Realizes something, goes back and checks notes...* Yup, here it is: "6/24/07: Woken just after midnight by extremely high-pitched noise. Suspect it might be squeeing, but cannot confirm. Must investigate further."

Plus, did anyone but me just feel incredibly sad when they realized that nice old man was going to die? Him, I liked. But then, I always liked Claudius.... It is sad. His own slow realisation, the tears in his eyes... At least Claudius is able to leave his memoirs, explaining everything. The way you could see his personality changing as he remembered . . . Just an amazing bit of acting!

Speaking of The Hand.
How does The Master end up with it?
The last time I saw the hand, it was at Torchwood, being watched over by Jack.
Was what we saw on the planet some remnant of Torchwood?

No, Jack brought it with him. Remember the "Oh. My. God. You have a hand. A hand in a jar. A hand in a jar in your bag" bit?

Oh, I know. I just find it really depressing. And exciting, for story reasons, but still - hugely depressing. I mean...it'd almost be better to be alone in the Universe. That's really the killing thing about it, isn't it? It's almost better to be alone. Well, exactly. The part where the Master is in the TARDIS (which, incidentally, is what Dave has named his new Wii), and the Doctor is trying to make him understand - they're all dead. All of them. We're all that's left. Not worrying about the TARDIS being stolen, or the most evil Time Lord ever being STILL ALIVE, but - trying to reach out to the only one of his kind he's managed to find in the universe. Wanting so much not to be alone that he'll let the whole "tried to destroy the Universe just to get more regenerations" thing slide, even. So very sad.
