Ah, the elusive blowfish driving a sports car. Do they know this alien is a threat, or are they just shooting on principle? Oh. Team Torchwood, the Teachers Pets: "The Doctor [Owen] with his hands full of blood, the Carer [Gwen] with her oh so beating heart, the Technician [Tosh] with her cold devices, which leaves me with the Office Boy [Ianto] promoted beyond his measure." No narration over the credits this season. That is one pink shirt Ianto's wearing. So how long was Jack gone/since the finale? And wasn't Team Torchwood sent to the Himalayas or something? There he is!!!!!!!! Squee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So he's a good guy with shady morals then. Hotness!!! Making out!!! Ass kicking!!! So just a simple meeting between old friends then. Torchwood talking about how weird Jack is and how little they know about him. But it's definitely more fun when he's around. Hee! and Eetah. Captain John Hart. So they didn't even know each other? Huh? Oh, they didn't know each other's aliases. Ah, he's a fellow Time Agent. But the Time Agency's shut down (when was it shut down? ) Only 7 time agents left. Wonder if we'll get to meet the other 5? Partners in every way. Trapped in a time loop for 5 years. Torchwood finds out about Jack being a Time Agent. This is the entrance for tourists. I remember the last time you said that. Snerk. Gwen and Rhys are getting married. Oy. This isn't going to end well. Mention of Jack being a con artist. Jack asks Ianto out. Timing of it is kind of suspicious to me. The penny drops. John wants Jack to come with him and do the time traveling con artist thing again. About Jack's immortality. Hey, they took the Torchwood detailing off the car.

Crossover squee: I am delighted with JM doing such a good job translating this character and making him different from Spike, despite the cocky, sexy-bastard stereotype. JM worked out the differences between the two so I'm really impressed. Which is a conversation for later when I am not so tired, but please feel free to take it up in my absence... Looking forward to the next ep.

Also, I thought the critter in the stolen car looked more like a lionfish than a blowfish, because I grew up in a house with a big tropical fishtank. However, if they made a mistake and it really WAS supposed to be a blowfish, check out the .com site of the same name for a giggle. But make sure you don't look at work and that there are no children present.
And speaking of same critter...was anybody else holding it in their mind that the JM character was the fishy guy in the stolen car? I thought they were supposed to be intertwined somehow at first. And then I realized that they were just using the fishy guy as a way to explain VERY briefly whose role was what in the team, and what important person was missing. Which...okay fine but how many viewers are that new that they don't know who's missing and who's the "heart" and who's the "geek" and who's the "medic" and who's the "love interest" in the show?

Millions. The first season was shown on BBC3 at 10pm and then repeated on BBC2 late. This season is going to be on in slightly edited form at 7pm, pre-watershed, so there's an entirely new family audience. Well, hopefully new. Season 1 was really working on 'adult'. They've promised the kissing stays in ;D So that "Hey kids, did you miss me?" becomes very meta, because there's a whole audience of kids who watched Captain Jack on Doctor Who and had to miss him in his spin off series but now he's back in a timeslot they can watch.

What is about James Marsters playing a character mostly evil and perpetually horny that rocks my world so mightily? I'm not sure I want to examine that too closely, but this episode hit all the right kinks for me. And James seemed to enjoy playing the character. His "Help me, Obi Wan" line was hilarious, and a reminder that JM is deep down, or maybe not so deep down, a big sci-fi geek. He was made to play that role.
This was a great second season intro because it introduced the characters to people who had never seen the show before, but without being tedious for those of us who have. There are a few changes in characterization, however. Gwen is lovey dovey again with Rhys. Owen seems to be a bit older and wiser, and there weren't any obvious repercussions to their disastrous affair. Owen wants to settle down with one woman--is Tosh going to be that woman? I saw hints of that in their conversation.
Jack and Ianto have a nice chemistry. Last season, I was a little uncomfortable with the imbalance of their relationship because it's between a boss and his subordinate, and Ianto was so insecure, whereas Jack was so....not. But in this episode at least, Ianto seemed to have a bit more self confidence in himself. Either that, or he's just not as awed by Capt. Jack as he used to be.
Um, as usual, I didn't entirely grasp some of the plot. I watched half of it last night and the other half this morning, so that might have something to do with it. So John Hart was after three nuclear bomb clusters, or at least that's was he was telling the Torchwood team, but in fact it was some sort of holographic message thingie left by the woman he murdered. He thought the message thingie was going to lead him to a diamond, but in fact, it was some sort of smart bomb that would attach itself to the person who discovered it. Do I have all that right? So, was there ever a diamond? If not, then why would the woman lead John Hart to think there was? Be, can you help me? Anyone? Anyone?

It was great, of course. Fast and clever. But am I the only person who actually misses some of the angst and darkness? (Which surprises, me, incidentally, since I generally found it obvious and clumsy last season). Owen, especially, has changed completely. I didn't like his character much last season, but now I actually think that there was something quite unique about that weird sociopath. ;D
This is in part about responding to to criticisms, and in part creating something suitable for censorsed versions going out earlier in the evening for the little ones. I mean, can you see an episode like "Countrycide" appearing again? The first season will not be appearing in a kiddified form!
I hope I don't seem over critical - I loved the ep and found it a great improvement - but it just feels like something has been lost.

I think if it goes on all the same like 2-01 then yeah it's lost something, but same isn't a thing Torchwood does, so far.

Jan and I just saw the episode and I have to say we loved it. It felt like James sent the show into overdrive as though John Barrowman weren't enough of a spark plug for the rest of the cast. The kiss/fight scene was really great. The scene where James tries to tempt Cap'n Jack to join him and con their way across the galaxies together reminded me somehow of "The Man Who would be King." Fun episode and a great start to a new season.
Oh, and Jan says "Hi" and love to all and sorry she's been too sick to be on the boards these last few weeks. She misses you all.

How can you beat an opening scene like that?
"Excuse me. Have you seen a blowfish driving a sports car?" . . . "Bloody Torchwood."
So happy this show is back!! **bounces**

I've been off this board for a long time. I just had to check in to say this is the best thing JM has done since Buffy. He was perfect in it. The right mix of sex, villainy and polymorphys perversity. The repartee was charged and very funny. I read he'll be back at least once more. If they haven't finished shootin ghte season I hope it's more than that.
