Whoa, what a mindfuck, I was certain that he was in a coma until this epside. But then it turned out that he really was. Huh.
Metropolitan Accountability and Reconciliation Strategy
Neat! Finally making a connection to the show's title. And no, the song is not enough.
and then he shangri-las it back.

This show is really good, but I don't have have as much to say about it as I thought I would. I think that some of it may be me having less affinity with cop shows that say medical shows or sci-fi or period drama. Some of it is unfamiliarity with the culture it's set in, Manchester, the 70s, 70s cop shows, even the UK. Like I had no clue what the little girl was all about until I looked up the show on wikipedia and discovered that she is the equivalent of the color bars in the US. Is there some good analysis and review of the show that anyone can recommend that would help me appreciate the show more?

So, is Frank Morgan the surgeon? And, what is Sam's mother's first name? As Sara pointed out, is he related to Rose Tyler? ETA: Name is Ruth. Darnit. ;D

This is very much "Normal Again" with the destroy Gene Hunt and all his compatriots so you can come back to us, thing.
Have I mentioned lately how much I love the music on this show and how evocative it is for me? Takes me back, it does. ;D

The operation is "time to destroy Gene Hunt and his whole rotten department?! So, Sam has to decide between the friends he's made in his "fantasy life" and his own recovery? How very Buffy.

Written reports, spying on Gene. And Sam is totally locked into "that's what it takes to get me home" and "I'm doing it again, trying to change you when there's no point".
Lots of emphasis on being "strong enough". And of course Gene is particularly nasty in his ep - just to reinforce why Sam should turn on him. Genes being a tough guy and the man they beat up is trying to be "strong enough" and not talk, but they break him.

Interesting how Sam wants to spend more time with Annie. Who, if this is really all a coma induced world, might just be another aspect of Sam's own mind. Eeeeeeep! Creepy little girl! Eeeeeee! But also, she's reminding him "none of this is real". 'Cuz if that's true, if Sam is really just about to go home to his real people, then Sam shouldn't care what happens to any of these "not real" people. Not worry about Annie or the guys, not worry is they get hurt. Can he do that? And is it the right thing. Gene just cares about "his city". And believes that if the bad guys follow no rules, then they don't have to either. Oooooooooh! M.A.R.S.! Rebuilding the force. Like rebuilding him. Only this DCI guy is still a part of this "not real" fantasy, so of course he's not going to respond to being told about the future and the coma and all. And now it's all wrapped up with an accident within an accident. Coma and hallucinating or undercover and crazy, like he's been before? Which is it!

Oooh! "If this is real, then Gene has a life. What happens to him?"
I have to wonder though, how does he know about future things? Not only the computers and cars and stuff we saw from his accident at the start of the series, but also the things he's know before they happened within this '70's reality. Like heroine and the people he's met in the future who he meets as younger version or meets their parents, etc. If I were him, I'd be sooooo lost as to what is real, what is not, etc.
So very nicely confusing!

You've got a good point there. I think he's in a coma. He knows way too much about future happenings and keeps running into people from his youth.
