beccaelizabeth.livejournal.com/1317985.htmland beccaelizabeth.livejournal.com/tag/torchwood+2-02That was *fun*. I had laugh muscles hurting, some bits were that fun. And then also dark, and revisiting some of my least favourite themes from last year but with a different spin. And then with big action and small moments and... that was just all kinds of fun. Also, Ianto has a personality. And it is *snarky*. And cute. ... it's much easier being a fan of him when he, you know, exists. specifics... We got a lot more from last week's previouslies than I thought. We also got the entire 'lets have sex' joke in the trailer. That makes it less fun. *pout* ... Except only Tosh and Ianto were there so it's a lot more aimed than it looked. Which makes it funner. We got some of that dark stuff where Torchwood ignore the usual rules, the bit where they won't let her have a lawyer etc... and then they turn out to be right, so what does that do to the moral stance of the show? I mean basically they just tortured her to find a terrorist cell, only with a SF twist. The fact that it worked is also down to the SF, the mind probe. So I can't technically give my usual complaint about torture-doesn't-work. But... they complicated the hell out of it by having the tortured be, well, emotionally tortured, be an innocent human woman who tried to help them once she found the plan. So oh dear they hurt an eventual ally. But... it worked. That's just not simple, that tangle there. They also fixed Gwen and her whole 'humanity' speech, the parts that bugged the hell out of me, and fixed Torchwood-the-organisation a bit too. Because Gwen standing there telling her if she feels human that counts, that would be 100% different than the Torchwood 1 stance on the matter. And Gwen's speech about humanity... well, okay, I still am annoyed at her having a definition based on demonstrating things in a socially acceptable manner, but here she's actually doing something useful with it instead of whining at people. Here it's more of a pep talk, being supportive. It's very difficult to keep liking a character that whines. ... I'm trying to think big thinky philosophical thoughts and I'm coming up "Because I know everything! And it's written on that screen there." That's just win that is. What else... had the feeling it was a bit short. Like, if it was a 42 minute US style episode it would have been spot on, but as a rounds out at 50 minutes with the previews UK ep? Very slow ending. And why is it still Gwen gets the wrap up speech? Ianto and Jack got much funny but no quiet moments. And we don't even know if they went on their date yet. ... Though Ianto's willing to talk about Jack's bad manners in bed... *giggles again* This was another good one. And it could be the kick off for a big arc. All kinds of win.

Ah, there's the opening narration. So something is making spouses turn on each other. And now it's spreading? Arms that turn into weapons. Like inspector gadget. Hee. love the phone argument. "With a dashing hero like me on the case, how can we fail?!" "He is dashing, you have to give him that. And "What if they can't stop it?" "Then we can all have sex." And I thought the end of the world couldn't get any worse" Can't say I really paid attention to the main plot much, but the group interaction was great.

This.. was a really rough episode to watch. Jack acting all paternalistic and being a complete bastard, and on top of that, being right about it (after a fashion), and none of his people standing up to him when they clearly thought he was taking things too far. Reminded me a lot of the Milgram experiments.
Yet we have the means getting justified by the ends he gets: I'm well aware of Torchwood as a dodgy, dark agency, but this whole situation had me edgy and nervous throughout the episode, which I've never felt before. Kudos to the jumpy camerawork that excarbated it.
Also reminded of Witchblade, just by the arm arms. Or something like that.

But the arms didn't so much say "Witchblade" to me as they did "budget constraints". But that could be partly my longstanding with the special effects on Doctor Who shows, and this is still closely related (in my mind) to DW other than how it takes such cheeky advantage of being a post-9pm watershed show. Thank goodness single entendres are cheap.

Obviously things were a lot darker on Torchwood this week. Two babies killed. Let's hear that again - two babies killed (at least, that was the implication in both cases). And the issue of identity loss was nicely grim.
Interesting that the sleepers were suicide bombers. It seems unlikely this went unnoticed by the production team, so what was going on there, do you think?
I thought this week's ep was a good balance between the new, pacier and more amusing Torchwood, and the entertaining bleakness (well, some of it was entertaining) from last season. Ianto, in particular, was great. He's developed a wonderful deadpan delivery.
Those arms? Terminator II, surely? But much, much, much cheaper. ;D
As for Jack in the episode, I was reminded of Angel's attitude to Harmony in Season 5. The Mind Probe (which some of us remember from classic DW) is not a torture device, but a device for uncovering the truth in people's minds. It just happens to hurt a lot.

Thank goodness single entendres are cheap. Noooo! Surely not! ;DSome of the witchblade comics featured armpieces and swords that were very similar to the style of weapons that these cell-members sported. Quite quite different from the Yancey Butler show... and well, no matter what the effects budget is, it will still be crotchwoot. *sheds tear of joy for single entendres*

Oooh scary break in. Hmmmm. Is Owen right? Did she do it? Is Gwen right? Did he do it? Or, did an invisible alien time-traveling gnome do it?

Whoa. They grabbed her. Oooh. Torchwood flexing muscle. They'll be no lawyer and charging. Just them. "Terrifying." "Really?" (All little boy hopeful voice. ) "Absolutely. Shivers down my spine." "You don't look scared." "Oh. It passed." Heeee! With the "windows" and "we don't sniff" stuff. Which is good to have the funny, 'cuz otherwise this would be scary. Needle snapping, scapels breaking. Cool!

Okay. That was gross. Not at all feeling very warm and fuzzy about that creepy thing coming out of her arm.

Okay. Those limpet bombs? Clever idea. But, what are these sleepers? Bombers, only? Looks like suicide bombers.

Exploding heads? Heh! Ianto is being very amusing in this ep. Heh heh!! The whole bedside manners, in bed manners bit is too funny! Eeeksome questioning . . . oooh, and a secret compartment inside her . . .that she didn't know about? Name, rank, serial number. But she/he/it does look at the boots. So, she the human doesn't know about the alien in her? Or?
