A flashback? 1918. Ah, Torchwood in the past. Credits. Tosh is wearing a dress! Cryogenically frozen. Time shift due to the Rift. Yep. I want some pretty boys in MY freezer. Seems like there's always a war somewhere. It's not exactly a war. Looks like one. Nice discussion about the nature of warfare. Humans are worth saving, wars and all. People from each time see that others as ghosts. Neat. Executed for shell shock? Yikes. About whether Jack would go back to his original time if he could. So, did Jack and Ianto actually go on their date yet? And then they kiss. Awww... And Tosh got some too. Yay! Soldier as a pawn of others. And we're back to the beginning.

Tommy, can you see me? Can you feel me near you? Tommy, can you hear me? Can I help to cheer you? Oooh, Tommy! Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Back in time with ghosts? And there's the ep title "every position must be held until the last man", so it's a WWI reference. Rift? Take me so I can be here now. Oooooooh!!! Early Torchwood!! **squees delicately** Tosh getting all spiffed, and Tommy gets unfrozen. Defrost him every 12 months or so. And Tosh looks forward to the defrosting, I gather? Is it time again? So, he actually is up and about for a bit of time each time and then is frozen again? Whoa! Because "one day we're gonna need him". Oh, TW back then sent a message to TW in the future, but the now TW don't know what they need Tommy for. Cool!! Heh! "Jack, have you got any more of those pretty boys in the freezer?" ;D So, folks pretty much know that Tosh and this guy are "seeing each other" once a year? "He's a frozen soldier from 1918." "Nobody's perfect." Very true, very true. Tosh has choices . . . What happened to them all back in 1918? She died - "they all did". Has Tosh never asked him about a girlfriend before? How many days have they had together? Spooky old hospital . . . with a wounded guy . . . something tells me the rift time slip thing is happening. The "ghosts" are back.

Jack memories again . . . another war he went through. And he doesn't want to disturb Tosh and Tommy again. Ah. Tommy seeing the news. "Seems like there's always a war somewhere." So we compare his remembering and Jack's. Damn. Tosh really is so beautiful when she's happy. He'd do anything for her. Ah. Well, that was a bit foreshadowy, wasn't it? Oopsie. One of the "ghosts" has noticed Gwen. That's gotta be a sign that things are shifting. "I see you." Because Gwen is the "ghost" from her perspective. I think for Tosh, a kiss makes it a bit too real. The whole situation and how it will likely turn out. "Want to come back to my place?" Go for it, Tosh! Except, you probably should have moved faster. Yep. Should have done this last year.

Jack and his lovely simple metaphors. "You're very close to Tommy." "I've only known him for 4 days." Owen knows this situation somewhat, so he's the one to warn Tosh. They decipher the notes from 1918 - heh! Some kind of armour. ;D It's not the future, it's now. And of course, the time locked message unlocks. Instructions for Tommy and Toshiko. You're the only one who can do this. We brought you from 1918 to now. And when you go back to 1918, your life will be like a thread, stitching time back together again. That's actually rather poetic. But I also like the Tosh's practical "how?" Another soldier who they know will die. Like the WWII Jack Harkness. Jack tells Tosh the truth about what will happen to Tommy, which will make it harder for her, but is the right thing to do. I think. Shot for "cowardice". And, what is almost worse, knowing that all the memories will come back when he goes back. But she needs to know so that she knows to spur him on to fix things when he starts falling apart. And that is really rather horrible, isn't it?

Save the world in your pajamas. You're strong enough to do this. Yes, she is, but it's gonna be hella hard. Give him his "last night", Tosh. "He can come home with me!" Only me here. And me. Just for tonight. So sweetly sad. Intersting the phrasing that Ianto uses. 1918 is Tommy's "own" time. Would Jack go back to his? And does Ianto mean "back" because he thinks of Jack only back in the past, like the WWII and so on times that they know about? Or does he mean "back", like whatever time in the future Jack came from originally? Or does Jack have a time that is his own, really? Don't know where I really belong. Sounds like he doesn't really. Love this scene! Flirty and sweet and sad. Nice parallel to Tosh and Tommy. Going home wouldn't fix lonely. Cut from their kissing back again to Tosh and Tommy. What did he tell about what's going to happen. Is she going to tell him? "They send you back to France." No, she doesn't. And all he wants to know is if they find his body. Because they didn't find so many of the bodies . . . lost in the mud . . . is that why he asks? They still find bones in the fields of France, I hear.

Different times mixing and Tommy is . . . remembering a bit, I think. I know what will happen, you're no better than the generals. Why me? All this time I've had, it means nothing. Yes. This is where he was, what he was thinking, when the rift opens and he goes back. Because Tosh convinces him to go. "You're a hero . . . you save us all." "I don't want to be a hero. I wont to stay here with you." I actually am all sniffly now. They take him out - "don't look back" - and future him sees the old him leave.

Tommy isn't using it . . . one of us will have to go back. Jack volunteers again, of course, because he could live through all the years again, I suppose. But instead, they'll go into his mind . . . and of course it has to be Tosh, because he trusts her. He's forgotten, or can't put his memories to it. "That's why I'm here. I'm a coward." "No, you are not!" "So what am I fighing for?" "For the future, for me. Because you're my brave handsome hero." Oh, packing up the clothes. Owen has to leave, and Jack says thank you. Now Tosh and Jack have each had their sad and noble soldier boys. All of this is still here because of you. (Owen, at this moment, I love you.) Because of him. What a good ep! I'm a complete soppy weepy mess now.

Yes! I liked the way you put this: And I think the uniquely Tosh thing was the strength it took to do all she did. Not just the sending him back, but the going into his mind to get him to do what they needed to do.

Oooh, and this is another thing that is special or inherent to Tosh. She believes humans are worth saving. All the team is trying to save humanity, but I think Tosh is the one who most believes they are all worth it. Loved the two scenes of Tosh and Tommy bookending the scene with Jack and Ianto. Time is a line on a piece of paper. And time is a circle.

Another excellent episode.
The chemistry with Tosh and Tommy really made this work. I really believed they had already developed a relationship in "4 days." And Tommy's little speech to Tosh about how he'd do anything for her if she'd just call him her handsome hero....<sniff>

Tosh just broke my heart... And she broke my heart most in all the scenes where she didn't break down, I think.
