Scary? Creepy. Kinda cool. But... sort of lite on Torchwood. A lot of people are comparing it to the show the episode writer created, Sapphire and Steel. I've never seen that one so I wouldn't know. But I do know it turned Team into Two, again - Jack & Ianto this time. And yet managed not to bring the Jack/Ianto. And, well, I kinda hate the way they resolved it. Too much fantasy, not enough even handwavey science fiction. beccaelizabeth.livejournal.com/1369095.html

The Master of Ceremonies guy was sufficiently creepy, and the opening scene with the little girl disappearing along with the carnival was way cool (although it didn't jibe with the later scene where the MoC offered that woman a ticket). But other than that, the story made very little sense to me and even the Torchwood team seemed a little bit "eh, what's going on now?" about it all. I really wanted them to explore Jack being a part of the carnival more. Why was he miming blowing his head off with a gun? I liked your point, be, about Owen feeling pain when before he didn't. That explains the look of utter shock on his face. Burn Gorman opened his mouth so wide, I thought he'd turned into a Pez dispenser! Was Ianto crying because he saved the one child, or because they lost all the others?

be, you've made me curious about Owen feeling pain now. Now I must fanwank, dammit. You keep making me do this. Okay, so maybe since pain is the emergency signal to our brain that something is happening to damage (possibly to death) the organism experiencing it, like, "Stop that/fix that RIGHT NOW!" and Owen-the-organism can't be damaged to death, he doesn't feel pain. But he still feels things because the rest of his senses are still functioning, otherwise he couldn't see or hear or taste. If his sense of touch didn't work, he couldn't feel his feet to walk and he couldn't sense his tongue and lips to talk. Why have all his senses return, giving him the illusion of living, but not the sense of touch? Why would "touch" come back less functional than the rest? Is his vision dim? Is his hearing diminished? Do we know? Or did I miss it? That's entirely possible. So...Why the pain from the MC? Well, heck, I dunno. The MC was fantastical, like Owen's resurrection. I am of the same thoughts about finding The Jack & Ianto Show a bit at odds with knowing there is Jack/Ianto. They should have more of a visible connection. A touch, a smile, an intimate reference. Enh.

Spooky Carnival (tm)?
Ooh, a Ghost Carnival. Cool.
Is this going to be like The Ring?
Cool old timey movie house.
Oh, OK, that guy from before was in charge of the film for the movie that Ianto and Gwen are seeing.
Tiny crowd. Poor theater isn't doing so well.
Jack's in the film!
Carnival and Cinema. Cool.
Stealing souls? Is this like in that ST:TNG episode where they went back in time to SF?
And is this chick in the hat the little girl who was taken way back when?
Like the clips wanted to be seen.
Ah, Jack heard the organ because he's in the clips.
And this woman is the mom?
Hmm. Maybe not.
Ohhh, are these the acrobats Jack hooked up with?
Night Travelers. Are they in Cardiff for Jack?
Yeah, this is like The Ring.
I love little bits from Jack's past, like this.
Oh, Jack was undercover.
The Man Who Couldn't Die.
She will take your breath away. I guess that's not the chick who was taken at the beginning.
Ah, escaping through the old theaters they played in. Cool.
Oh, this is the chick who was taken.
Filming the film to trap them. Clever.
Trapped in the film to escape again some day.

I really, really liked this one.
It had a spooky atmosphere, and a ghost story vibe, plus it explored the whole Carnival/Cinema dynamic.

Not many folks showed up to this (probably supernatural) educational showing of old-timey movies. Yep. The barker has taken over the film. And Jack knows something about this. And Ianto is fascinated by it. Ooooooh!! Jack's in the movie?! Doing a kill himself over and over "trick". Oooooooh! Ooopsie. Did the carnival people come out of the movie? Something they did affected things at TW even. Disturbance in the force rift? Their days were numbered. Cinema killed the traveling shows. Not dead enough, I'm thinking. The creepy show people steal . . . something from people. Their essence? Or . . . ?

Movie played itself. Yes indeede it did. Heartbeat but not breathing, liquid all gone. Huh. Odd, that. "Make her cry, I want to drink her tears." Hmmmmm. So, they take all sort of liquid out of people?? Comparison to spider. Aha! Life force taken. Once again, Owen and Jack will each have an . . . advantage, of a sort. But what I/we really want to know is what Jack was doing with them before, eh?

Watching the film . . . are we gonna learn more about Jack's past, eh? I was sensational! ;D Part of a freak show - some things never change. They're night travelers. "So, they did exist." "I didn't work with them. I never knew anyone who did. They only performed in the dead of night." Intriguing-er and Intriguing-er. And now the title - they came from out of the rain. What has Ianto spotted? Oh! The people that are wandering about, zapping people, are the ones missing from the movie. Coolio! Heh! "Local knowledge" "is that what you're calling it these days". Heh! ;D Although, I do think Jack does generally want Ianto's knowledge about the area and its history, etc. Ah, and Jack tells Ianto about what he was doing there, but not the rest of the gang. And do they not even ask for more from him because they're used to never getting details from him? Jack joined a small traveling show to try and find the "night travelers". Oh! Pearl lives in water, etc. A mermaid? Closest you'll ever see to one. So, that's why she needs the liquid from people then, and why they appear "out of the rain". She will take your breath away. Well, yes, yes she will. Did these two just . . . arrive and attach themselves to an already existing show, then? And the other show people didn't really know about them? Or kept away from them? See! There's some of Ianto's "local" knowledge about pubs. The sea. Does she bring a bit of the sea with her? Leave a trail of the sea? Eeeeep!

Heh! If "cinema killed the traveling show".
He's got a bottle of people essence and listens to it? They've got 6 people (so they took the whole car then). We can't feed, but we can hear.
Hmmmmmmm. "Last breaths". Bring the others. Get the other people from the movie?
A clue from the nurse. (And Ianto has some reason to know the psychiatric place, too.) So, I'm betting the witness is the woman that lost the little girl way back when.

Huh. So not the one who lost the girl. The girl herself? Or just someone else? And she tells Jack he's "from nowhere". So, are those standing people the "essences" of the people who are now in the hospital? Ooooh! And they "touched" Ianto, but passed him by. So, it wasn't just me reading into things when I was worried about him in the theater. When Owen and Gwen left, I was worried he'd somehow get sucked in by them. Wanted to take my breath and put it in his flask in his pocket, take her with forever. But she ran. And saved herself. Movie dude, you should never have gone back to your editing space. And don't go look in the tub, you git! Run!! Run!! Call! Call!! Oh, they've returned to the theater. Look out, theater people!

Figure it out, Jack and Ianto and all! Oh, the theater folks are his mom and dad. Film of a film. Trap them again. Then expose to light. Clever. But will it work? And you better get the flask first, eh? Circus needs an audience. Good to send Owen, 'cuz, well, they can't exactly steal his breath now can they? Yup. What are you, not a breath in your poor sad body. Get the flask! Yes!! Heh, nicely grabbed. And then run and eeep and toss. So, it's like sport then. And the film and then expose to light thing worked - which is good for a completely made up on the spot from virtually no evidence kind of plan. Opening the flask not good? Maybe not good if the person isn't right there to have the breath put back into them? Only one left? We've managed to save one. But which one? One of the kids. Oh that's really a very sad outcome. Just one of the kids but all the rest of his family gone? A nice unresolution-y resolution. All those bits of film out there (and we, of course, see one). And Jack locks up the flask - quick! Put it away! So, no explanation for the night travelers were. More of a supernatural vibe, except that the rift is involved somehow.

Also really like this comment of yours: Also agree that the whole "get them by filming and exposing to light" thing is . . . well, thinly implausible is putting it nicely. ;D But still, nicely atmospheric ep.

I can't believe none of the rest of the team picked up on the "man who can't die" vibe from that image. I think a bit of both. Relief and sadness. Mostly sadness over not saving all/more of them.
