Why didn't they retcon the mom? I'll bet she would even have welcomed it. Then she wouldn't have to know about her son, and about Things, and about the fact that for all her dogged determination in looking for him, she couldn't cope with what she found. i was expecting this as the most likely outcome, or at least a choice - and i was surprised that it wasn't brought up at all. it seems like they're letting more and more people know about the existence of torchwood. i don't know if this is supposed to be deliberate on their part (via the writers) or if the writers aren't consciously thinking it through.

Telling Andy that mom knows and now wants him to corraborate. Using me. You'd never suggest me to TW, no I wouldn't. Ouch. So, it's harsh truth/reality day, is it? i wondered if part of it was wanting to protect him from the things she's seen - that maybe she thought more about the ways it's changed her, and didn't want andy to be changed by all the things he would too then know? just a thought. yes, it was very "them", wasn't it? at the end of the episode, though, i still didn't fully understand why jack didn't tell her once she started figuring things out on her own. it seemed, from him watching her put away the files, that maybe when she got as far as the facility, he felt like he needed to 'teach her a lesson' somehow about listening to him when he says to stop, by letting her carry it through on her own. but if so - that's, um, just a little bit paternalistic.

Oh yeah, Ianto totally helped her. Totally. Which just adds to the possible background story for him, eh? i think it's so interesting that first he tried the direct approach and when that didn't work, he decided to go subversive. it seems to me that a lot of people would do the two in opposite order - start out being sneaky before taking things into the open. i also think it's interesting that jack didn't think ianto would do anything sneaky until the point at which gwen showed up at the facility. i wonder if ianto's ever been there. given his comment in the previous episode about already knowing the psychiatric hospital, i wonder if the facility itself or even just knowing it exists (depending on how much he knew/saw) was triggering of unpleasant memories for him...
