Now all the aftermath. "Maybe killing him would be the release he needs." I kinda maybe agree with him a bit, much as I don't want to. And he's right that it's not your fault, Jack. You were a little kid who dropped his hand for a moment. Were you as a kid supposed to protect him from this horrible enemy? Jphn's gonna stick around on Earth. **does the happy schmoopy sigh** Ianto putting Owen's things away. **sad sigh** Gwen and Jack and Ianto doing the same for Toshiko. **sad sad sigh** Last message from Tosh. It was indeed impressive and you did good, Tosh. The end is where we start from. Well, it's been like that for Jack for a long long time now, hasn't it? Well. That was one hell of an exellent finale. Damn! I know lots of folks might not like it, 'cuz it's not always that logical and stuff. But it brought the operatic level of angst and all, so I'm totally happy. Oh, Tosh! I was sort of expecting Owen, 'cuz I knew the whole dead thing couldn't go on forever, but Tosh!

I don't watch TW regularly. I only watch for the JM bits. So that's what I focus on.
And loved this:
"It's always the same. Nobody listens until you tie them up."
[Do they write him these lines or does he through them in for the Buffy fans, or am I reading too much into what simply evolved naturally?]
Also: "I'm not my own man."
As for the rest---it was a bit of a mess. Plus, I agree about the acting ability of "Gray."

I feel like if the show were broken into pieces, it was pretty successful.
The return of James Marsters? Check. Big explosions? Check. More Caption Jack backstory? Check. Actor who greatly resembles Barrowman to play his brother? Check. Heart-wrenching death scene? Check.
But the whole is not greater than its parts.
Marsters was back, but didn't have a whole lot to do, once it was revealed who the real Big Bad was.
All the explosions led to what? A couple lame "inspirational" speeches by Gwen, and Rhys looking on in near hero-worship. Puke.
The Captain Jack backstory was not really very plausible, as becca has already so wonderfully explained.
The actor playing Jack's brother LOOKED the part, but as others pointed out, couldn't really act for a hill of beans.
Finally, the heart-wrenching death scene. I got to give it to the actress who plays Tosh--she nailed that scene. I was in tears. And how painful that she died feeling like failure because she couldn't get Owen out. And if Owen did die, he will never know that Tosh died a hero.
The scenes between Owen and Tosh kind of made up for the whole other mess. I can't wait for the next season!!

I "It's always the same. Nobody listens until you tie them up." [Do they write him these lines or does he through them in for the Buffy fans, or am I reading too much into what simply evolved naturally?] Well, I flashed back to Buffy and Dru in the crypt, so if it evolved naturally, you aren't the only one spotting/inserting Buffy subtext.

If ya'll want to know who makes it and who doesn't after the season finale there is a bbc radio episode that you can download from their website. I'm just disappointed that there won't be a full 13 episodes this coming season. Just five, IIRC, which means less James Marsters.

They killed Owen and Tosh? Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.
I just watched this over the weekend and JM is truly doing Spike as he was extremely sympathetic to me. But that's okay - I love JM doing Spike.
I can't believe they killed Owen and in such a weinie fashion. At least Tosh got to die all bloody and gory in Jack's arms. And I still don't like Ianto at all so I'm bummed that the wrong person died.
ETA: And I agree that while there were good things scattered about, the whole just didn't fully satisfy. The actor playing Jack's brother was really, really bad. As in - can't act at all.

I'm not incredibly invested in the show so I feel sort of neutral about most everything. I like Tosh. Owen got better either through character development or re-characterization in the second season. I was sort of hoping for more from James, but to me, which John had similarities to Spike, the character was distinctly different, so kudos to him. The actor who played Jack's brother was really, really, weak.

(I'm such a rebel) Oh I agree James added nuances but the basic character was very spikelike. And I'm not being negative when I say that. I like Spikelike characters. Some of JM's guest spots have left me yawning. But, as I say, I'm a bit of a rebel on the board as my likes and dislikes seem to be fairly opposite of everyone else most of the time.

It's funny, because I see Owen as being kind of Spike like, but yeah, I can see where John Hart had shades of Spike as well. I never really liked Tosh very much (though her death scene made me bawl) so I think everyone can have their favorites and not so favorites.

Ianto did start out more as a background figure but now that he's got a bigger part in what the group does he's a lot more interesting... The scenes with him and Captain Jack don't hurt, either.

Also, I like the growth we saw in season two (in Ianto and all the team), from the time when Jack was gone and then as they build a new relationship with him.
