Copying what I posted in the main thread: I have to agree that the casting of YoungJohn and YoungMary were great. I do think that Castiel is who he says he is, mostly because he seems to be projecting a sort of angelic demeanor and I haven't seen any inconsistencies in his behavior or any hint of maliciousness from him so far. And I think he brought Dean back in time or whatever instead of Sam because he can't change history (or "destiny" as he says). The goal was to provide Dean with the information he needed to know; He can't change what happen to Sam and since Sam is slipping away Castiel may not be able to even reach him and having Sam see what Dean saw probably wouldn't have made any difference. i don't know what comment you were responding to since i don't log in often enough to read the main thread very frequently, but i agree with what you said here. i also feel like castiel has done everything so far with a very specific purpose in mind - like he's very (very, very) deliberate in every move he makes - and that he brought dean back in time because he felt dean needed to know the backstory. from this perspective, bringing sam into the past wouldn't make sense, because to someone who believes sam is headed down a bad path, they'd likely think that showing him the past would only make him more resolute in his decisions. plus castiel might already know that the YED showed sam some of the same events (i wonder if dean is going to find out sam kept that from him; i can't imagine he'd be happy about that!).

So, was the Monster of the Week last night an obvious metaphor for Sam or what? Loved the background music they used.

the last episode was the first one this season that left me feeling somewhat confused about what they were trying to do. it seems like if sam and dean's old family friend hadn't pressed jack into a situation where he felt like he had to defend his wife, maybe he wouldn't have "turned". and yet the show seemed to be saying that a slippery slope is a slippery slope, and if you take one turn down the wrong path, you might abruptly find yourself the whole way at the end of that bad road. i felt like it was a very black and white way to think in what i'd been seeing as a typically shades-of-grey season. i agree about the background music, though.

My post from LJ on this episode:
I don't have to have angst on my plate every week and I truly appreciate all the episodes SPN has done that have stepped outside the box. The Ghostchasers, the one where Dean was a production assistant in Hollywood and now this one. I giggled, I adored, I thought some things were silly but overall I really truly appreciated the awesome homage to monster movies.
The opening credits were gorgeous. It kind of took me to a Buffy musical place and that's always a good thing. The black and white really brought out the pretty in Jensen especially. And the one moment where Dean talked seriously about what he does was nicely inserted and moved me.
Then we go to the image of Dean in lederhosen strapped down. Bwah! The pretzels, Dracula having a coupon for pizza, the crazy phantom music behind the screen which was just the red herring guy, Dean with beer foam mustache, Dracula driving a moped and beeping, INTERMISSION, and kickass Jamie.
It did feel a little out of sequence since last week ended with the guys in full on angst mode but I get that they wanted this around Halloween.
I also feel like this was a bone thrown out to the whiners who are moaning on TWOP that they just want the boys back together hunting monsters.
I am more invested in the arc and those episodes, but I don't mind a break for something as awesome as this was. Gripping drama the way the first few episodes were? No. But enjoyable? For me - yes.

Oh yeah. Particularly given how... icky last week's was it was very nice to have such a delightful change of pace. Not to mention the added bonus of having a female character not only survive to the end of the episode but also help save the boys' asses. Loved that our shapeshifter named his female persona Lucy, which had to be a nod to Lucy Westerna from the novel Dracula. I also got a huge kick out of the reference to yet another classic monster movie, King Kong, right as the shapeshifter was dying.

I thought they did a very nice job of incorporating several 30's classic and, as you say Sara, twas Beauty that killed the beast, was a lovely reference to King Kong.

I don't normally watch the show, but I'm always interested in the "different" episodes of certain shows.
Did anyone notice that the set was Stars Hollow?

Maverick.
I don't suppose that's a deliberate reference to the presidential campaign.
And then the ginormous beer stein. Hee!

All of Dean's scars got healed when he got resurrected, not just the ones from the hellhounds. Interesting.

I thought the episode was a great send up of old school horror movies. And it was a great change of pace. The timing of it worked for me. The first couple episodes of the season got us up to speed on the boys and set up the main storyline of the season. At the end of the last episode, Sam said he didn't plan to use his powers, which suggests to me that something has to happen or somebody (Ruby or Lilith or whoever) has to do something to change that decision and set things in motion again. So this point in the season is a good place to do something completely different.

i agree with you guys - i loved the different feel of this episode, loved the homage and i thought the whole thing was great. i also loved jamie coming to the boys' rescue. and no, i did not notice it was stars hollow either! liz, when you say a couple comments up, "At the end of the last episode, Dean said he didn't plan to use his powers, which suggests to me that something has to happen..." i'm guessing you mistyped and meant sam? just wanted to make sure.
