Well, Natalie's not dead yet . . . . Doc I'm Voting He's the Big Cheese Cylon Cottle! Crisis in the quorum again. Adama gives the big snub to Zarek and Apollo. Which, I understand he's got more on his mind right now, but still. Not the brightest idea. Why oh why can't these folks just, you know, talk to each other! "Do you hate your people so much?" Well, I'm thinking Sharon has done just about everything she can to distance herself from the Cylons emotionally and mentally and physically, so yeah. I think she's not that fond of "her" people. Duh! I think Adama is getting really sick of hearing about visions. Oooooh. "More important, you betrayed a promise to me!" Well. That's more important than everything else? Really? Everything else? Hmmmm. Apollo tells the truth and it doesn't go down well with the quorum. Oh, such a mess they're all in!

I think Adama's right that they're heading off to unbox the D'Annas. Oh, snap! "But I was elected to office, which is more than Roslin can claim." Facts on the ground. Facing the reality of things. I . . . well, I just don't know how the hell they just pick someone else? I mean, what else are the laws for, that say what order to go in to reach the next leader when one is vanished, if not to solve this whole problem? I mean, I don't really trust Zarek either, but he's got a point. How can you just "pick" one? How is that legal? Ooooooooooh! Lawyer guy's back!!!!! I love this guy!!! With his cat and his cool shades and all. "When an irresistable force meets an immovable object, stand aside and wait for the class action suit." Didn't I say I loved him? Inhaling fear and exhaling anger. I like that phrase. I think I need to find an opportunity ot use that phrase . . . Oh frak! Adama is sending Tigh to ask Caprica about the hub. Yeah, that's gonna go well. Oh, Saul, Saul, Saul. She always ends up getting more info out of you than you get out of her. Don't you get that yet? A raptor, all drifty and beat up. (Nice CGI and camera work there, by the by.)

Oh poor Adama. All wounded and scared about Roslin. And Tigh, just trying to make things right for "the old man". Both Roslin and Apollo as studies in "repressed ambition". Interesting. And, I think, rather apt. The field of floating ruined ships is a beautiful and simultaneously creepy image. Is it one of the signs of the apocalypse that Adama is the one going off the emotiona rails and Tigh is the sensible one saying "shouldn't we be back there protecting the fleet"? The lawyr guy just keeps . . . looking at Apollo. Because he wants him to figure things out on his own? It he being all snarkily non-helpful to help force that? (Well, and because that's what he's like, too, of course. ) Uh oh. Adama knows something's up with Tigh and Six. Pregnant?! WTF!!!! Um. But . . . but he's a cylon too. They can't make babies together, can they? Is this maybe Baltar's baby? The dream baby from long ago? Whoa!! BFF fight! "You know how many times I've had to repair this thing?" Heeeee!!

OK now Starbuck is the sensible one compared to Adama? That's when you know you've really gone over the edge. Lawyer guy twitting Adama about realism versus hopeless hopefullness. And now we get the title. The things we deem most essential. So, what do each of our characters deem the most important thing to them? What can't they do without? We could do worse than Tom Zarek. And Adama doesn't go for it. But at least he's realized that he' not making rational decisions. Yes! Ask the cat!! Not who doesn't have flaws, but who has the qualities that are . . . wait for it . . . most essential, eh? So, who'd he write down? Apollo? Yep. It was kind of obvious. "What you always wanted" and "it's why you had me cross 47 names off that list" and "savor your victory, you'll never get the chance to serve" and then pull a gun? WTF??! OK, now I'm really really confuzzled!!

Um, Ok. Wants to shoot him because he's a shining beacon of hope and hope is the last thing we need. Um. I'm with Apollo. What the hell is he talking about? The cat's dead. And it wasn't his. (Um. Who is the other cat, then? Was the cat never there? Did he hallucinate the cat? Was he all "I see dead cats"? WTF?) And he's basically nuts 'cuz he chose to save himself rather than try to save his family when he probably couldn't? Aaaaad that's why he wants to shoot Apollo. Except he doesn't and instead is sworn in as pres. And Tigh is in charge of the fleet. O-kay. That was odd. "You're not the same man." Oh, Bill. You have no freakin' idea how right you are!!!! Tigh in charge of leading everyone to Earth. **slightly hysterical giggle** The president gives his would-be killer a doggie. **slightly more hysterical giggling** Adama staying behind (to continue to search for Roslin, I presume) while the fleet jumps away. Good plan. Yep, that's just a Jim Dandy plan that is. Why, that's a Starbuck-style plan if I ever heard one. Which, come to think about it, probably means it will work. Sharon rocking and singing to Hera in the brig. (Now every time I see the kid, I just waiting for her to do somthing freaky and momentus. ) Well. That was one gloriously freakishly messy crazy-quilt of an ep, wasn't it?

I don't think I understand the bit about Prisoner Six being pregnant and Tigh (potentially/theoretically) being the father? I thought 2 cylons couldn't procreate with each other? No? It makes no sense to me either. I mean, I can see why Adama thinks this, 'cuz he doesn't know that Tigh is a cylon, but . . . All I can think is that it's actually Baltar's baby. 'Cuz insane as that is, it's not quite as insane as Tigh being the baby daddy.

Unless the final five are more human than not and thus different from the others, likening it to a human/cylon mating. I suppose that could be why the final 5 are so "special", eh?

Not one of the best episodes, and frankly a bit confusing for a newcomer to the series. I perused the BSG forum at Television Without Pity and I feel somewhat enlightened. Most of you probably know this, but Jake, the dog that Lee gives to Romo, was the owner of the yellow bowl that was used as a signal for the New Caprica Resistance whenever Gaeta had information to pass along. Also, I came across this hilarious re-cap of the Romo with a gun scene: Seemed perfectly clear to me:
Romo : You're the best choice for president so I have to kill you! Also my cat is dead somehow! Lee : You had a wife and two daughters! Romo : Swear you're the best man for the job! Lee : Ok. Romo : We're good then. Lee : Have a dog.
Yup, clear as crystal. Evil duplicitous crystal. And that led to this animated gif: Bwah! But even though it wasn't one of my favorite eps, I did enjoy the scenes between Edward James Olmos and Michael Hogan. As someone pointed out on the TWOP forum, Michael Hogan's eye should be considered for a special Emmy. That was some excellent eye acting! And the line about Adama always having to repair that ship is especially funny. Ronald Moore explained in one of his podcasts for an earlier episode that it wasn't in the script that Adama break the ship in anger. EJO ad-libbed the scene assuming it was a cheap prop when in fact it was a very expensive antique model ship. Best! Gif! Ever!!!! Evil duplicitous crystal. Have a god kthx. ETA: Just noticed my dog/god typo there and was gonna fix it . . . . but now I think I like it.

I suppose that could be why the final 5 are so "special", eh? Huh. Does this mean that Tory is going to end up pregnant? Cause I will be so sad if that happens.
