Well, since nobody's started here, I guess it's up to me.
WARNING: Spoilerific if you haven't read your copy yet.
First off, everyone knows the issues I have with the art in this series. That said, I must compliment the artist, who, if he doesn't seem to have a grasp of simple human proportion, does manage facial features and expressions very well.
Next, I was deeply critical of the ending of Part III of this arc. (Actually, I've been critical of Parts I and II as well.) I thought--and still think--that they were going for the cheap shock. However, I'm very pleased with how the story is resolved. There were quite a few chuckles throughout.
I found myself dividing the portions of the story I couldn't buy--but didn't care that I couldn't buy--and the portions I could.
Believable: Buffy & co. beating the vamps at their own game and kicking vamp ass
Believable: Willow taking on and besting any witch that challenges her.
Less believable: Buffy's dive off a skyscraper in a less than world-savey suicidal scenario.
Still less believable: Cement-into-water in time to prevent certain beloved faces from kissing pavement in the time-honored Angel way. Fun, anyway.
Not believable: Dracula/Buffy alliance
Believable: Dracula being pissed off at the young vamps' stealing of his powers
Believable: Dracula being one major butt kickin' warrior.
Not believeable: Giant Dawn
Not believabler: Giant Dawn Robot--with a tail??
Believable: Pissed off Giant Dawn taking out Giant Dawn Robot
Not believable: Dracula/Xander friendship--especially in its Master/Manservant form. Did anybody else read some slashy subtext here? All right, IF you can buy it then...
Believable: Dracula's viceral understanding of honor and his handing the sword over to Xander to avenge Renee'.
And you might say the Thrall has gone out of their relationship.

Hey, long time no post.... Stopped paying for the comix after issue #5 (why throw good money at something that only made me unhappy), stopped reading them around issue #9. Made the mistake (IMO) of reading this issue at the local Borders recently. Can I say here how much I hate the comix? 'Cuz I really do. Hate giant Dawnie, hate the idea of Buffy committing crime to finance her activities, hate the bit w/ Suzuki (Sashimi...whatever). I find it laughable on its face that her drunken encounter with this girl was "the best night of [her] life." What's more, I find it laughable (and kind of sad) on a deeper level as well. Given the way it started, and the way it ends in this issue, this Suddenly Sappho turn has less to do with Buffy's sexual orientation (IMO) and more to do with her discovery of the pleasures of pleasuring herself. Seriously, if masturbation is the ultimate fulfillment of your sexual awakening, then you've got problems. I figure this is in reaction to societal pressures (esp. on young women) to be part of a couple, but Buffy seems to be slipping closer and closer to Narcissism. After all, the characters around her only matter to her if they reflect some aspect of her. She may be happier now, but she doesn't seem a whole lot healthier. Given her conversation w/ Willow (basically, I've got a list, and you're not on it), I wonder if we're actually being set up for an eventual Buffy/Willow pairing. That would be another reason for her trial run w/ Whatshername, which doesn't make it any more palatable.

Hey guys! Thanks for the discussion. I was beginning to think no one wanted to come play in my playground. ;D Just a reminder that we all have opinions and should feel free to express them, but let's try and keep the discussion on an even keel and not look like we're shouting. ;D There are people who like the comics and while the stories may not appeal to everyone, let's not forget our fellow readers. Thanks!

My understanding of posting etiquette is that all caps is shouting, not other forms of emphasis like bolding or italics. Is that not correct?

I find it laughable on its face that her drunken encounter with this girl was "the best night of [her] life." I don't...unless it was a night with Riley that really qualified. Take her previous choices: Angel - yeah, that night started out nice, but the end almost certainly colors the memory. Parker. Same, only with somewhat less murder. Riley: probably lots of pretty nice nights, but he never really seemed to "do it" for her, unless they were under the influence of a spell. Spike: the sex was good, but inevitably followed by self-hatred. Seems to me the girl-on-girl night might qualify as at least one of the top five. As far as my reading of the text, there's no data to back up that hypothesis - no indication is given that Buffy didn't enjoy giving as well as receiving pleasure. Yes, she "did less things", but that's because she had no experience with that sort of sex before. I've often thought that if I had a relationship with a lesbian, I'd have no clue what to do or how, and I'd have to let her take the wheel. 'Cause it's NOT the same thing as masturbation. I'll take the relationship with Satsu (I did get that right, I hope) over Spike most any day, and over Angel, too, for that matter.

Finally going back thru all my comics, so I could make comments on the ones I hadn't commented on . . .
______________________________________
Well, first, the action was super cool – lots of layers and different things going on in different places. But also, I really noticed how not one person one their fight alone. Buffy helped Willow fight Kuriko, Dracula guarded Xander and helped the team, Andrew gave Dawn advice about taking out Mecha!Dawn, etc. Which nicely fits the overall theme of the Buffyverse (the slayer is more powerful with her friends to help) and the season 8 comics arc that we’re seeing so far, with Buffy and company telling the other slayers they have to fight as a team and the villains working to split them up, etc.
Even after the fight is over, we see how people are helping each other, depending on each other, etc. And then of course we have the final ending panel of Dracula to juxtapose against that – “And I’ll stand watch alone.”
Also? Loved Andrew’s “I’ve been preparing for this my whole life” line.

I tend to take the actual quote as, you know, something that people say. And they mean it, every time they say it. I'm betting that some nights with each of the people she's loved and had sex with were "one of the best nights" of her life. Because, at that time, they were. You know? Of course, I tend to be a "you can have a bunch of best nights of your life" kind of gal, personally.
