The Big Bang Theory This is the place to talk about the shenanigans of our favorite geek squad.
In this thread, we only discuss those episodes which have already aired. No spoilers! If you post a spoiler I will introduce you to Sheldon and lock you in a room with him and two books: one of poorly constructed scientific assumptions and a How To Speak Mandarin! textbook. I don't know about you, but that's not my idea of a fun afternoon.
Discuss away!

Copying my posts about the show from the summer:
Re: The Soulful Spike Society Part 979 « Result #17 on Jul 22, 2008, 6:14pm » I decided to give Big Bang Theory a try, and I have to say that I am pleasantly surprised. I initially avoided the show because I'm not generally into sitcoms and the premise made it seem like "laugh at the scientists/geeks; laugh at the dumb blond." But the chick's not a dumb blond; she's just not a scientist or a geek. She holds her own and makes her own fun. And the guys totally make sense to me; I mean, the things they say, I pretty much think all the time, even if I've learned not to say such things in the general public. Basically, the show is laughing with the characters instead of at them. I also liked that the show decided not to put off the love from afar storyline forever and ever, the way shows like to do. And it's refreshing to watch a show that gets the science right.
I found the studio audience (?) laughter a little offputting at first, but that might just be because my sense of humor is different from everyone else's. Then, either it got better, or I learned to tune it out.
I also wonder how much story arcing there's going to be, because I love me some storyarcing and stand alones can start to get tedious after a while.

Then Matthew Said:It's indeed a live studio audience. As the show went on, it gained a geekly following, so the audience towards the end is probably more in line with your sense of humour than the one from the earliest part of the season. And they are SO laughing AT them, too. I know I am. In the way that says "Oh, god, my people." I do like the fact that Penny isn't dumb in the slightest, and finds them entertaining in a way. I particularly like her communication style with Raj, not at all expecting him to answer her verbally except when he's drunk. And I LOVE Sheldon something fierce. He is a cat in human form: misanthropic, occasionally affectionate, curious, and totally a selfish slave to his own comfort. My friends and I have taken to using "It's a non-optional social convention" with each other. How far have you got in the series, Liz? Finished up the season? Then I Said:I just finished the season. See, Sheldon I identify with the most. Hopefully that doesn't say anything bad about me. I'm not germphobic or obsessed with gastrointestinal functions, but I always analyze where the best place to sit in a room is based upon a series of environmental factors. And so forth. And pay meticulous attention to detail. And correct people and fictional characters [in my head] when they get things wrong. And I've also taken other people literally when they were joking many a times. I tend to take things literally a lot of the times. I've also pondered that non-optional social convention thing. About gift cards, instead of gifts; my mother told me in no uncertain terms that I was expected to give gift cards to everyone in the family on birthdays and other select holidays no matter how ridiculous that custom is. And James and I actually gave each other $20 Amazon.com gift certificates for birthdays and Christmas (thus canceling each other out) for several years until we stopped giving each other gifts entirely. Recently, we've started giving each other gifts again, but that's mostly because of Heather. The only reason I don't talk usually the way he does is because I've been scolded, lectured, and humiliated about it so many times growing up.

Re: The Soulful Spike Society Part 979 « Result #14 on Jul 22, 2008, 8:15pm » Oh! And wrt to The Big Bang Theory halloween episode. The whole thing about Robin Hood constantly being mistaken as Peter Pan happened to a Band friend of mine. It was during Seige Feast, when we were supposed to dress up in vaguely medieval warfare looking costumes (mostly tin foil shields and swords) and one guy got a shepherd's costume and a plastic scimitar. Everyone, of course, kept asking him why he was dressed as a shepherd, but he kept insisting that he was supposed to be a Moor. It was this constant refrain throughout the whole feast: "I'm a MOOR, dammit!" ;D
And the dressing up as the Doppler Effect is an awesome costume. I may do that some day.

Re: The Soulful Spike Society Part 994 « Result #11 on Sept 23, 2008, 3:06pm » Ha! Penny (from the Big Bang Theory) dumps all her clothes into one laundry load, just like I do. I guess that's one way in which I'm not like Sheldon.

Heh! I love how they don't tone Leonard down. He just keeps going further and further with his explanations. ;D Also? "Oh, I see." "What does that stand for." "Oh. I. See." "Yes, but what does it stand for?" Plus the dancing corn starch and water was hi-larious!

Danger! Danger! Also? "You mean up 'til now we've been experiencing the happy fun-time Sheldon?" Ah, poor Penny. Gaming can be a bit addictive sometimes. And she was at a vulnerable moment in her life. But when you're being told by Sheldon to get a life? Time to step back, woman!

"Mmmm, testify!" Followed by Leslie's wonderfully literal "I'm not touching that". ;D
