And let me just add this: in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize, the only person to turn it down was Le Duc Tho; putting oneself in that company (especially since this is a prize which cannot technically be refused; Tho's share is still in escrow) is hardly a canny move.
Julia, there are so many sheer idiots on the internet, I can't believe it.

Obama wins Nobel Peace PrizeI don't quite know how I feel about this. On the one hand, it's quite the honor. On the other hand, it's awfully early in his presidency. One thing's for sure, there are right-wing heads exploding all over the internets. Tonight's punditry will be loads of fun to watch. Anne, was really hoping it'd be Pete Seeger Left and right- some of the ugliest rhetoric, at Metafilter, at Making Light and on my flist has been from the progressive end of the spectrum. I think there's a virus for ugly extreme reactions to everything going around, or it's a late stage manifestatio of the same viral stupidity that makes drivers think turn signals are optional and lane markers mere suggestions. Julia, honestly, does it cost money to think firstI watched his speech. I think President Obama was as shocked and surprised as the rest of us. The speech itself was a thing of beauty, IMHO, and maybe now he'll have more leverage to get done what needs to be done. Idiots on the interwebs? I am shocked, shocked, I say!

Some days I feel like sending my $5 to MeFi so I can favorite comments like this one. Julia, people have damned well not been paying attention.

I hate my once favorite local talk radio station. WLS. It's gotten so politically/personally inflamatory that it's painful to listen to it. All the name calling and unwarranted attention to the insignificant is enough to turn my stomach. It is all half of my office listens to and regurgitates over lunch. That is all.

Jon Stewart's riff on CNN last night was genius. All 12 minutes of it. Lots of work went into that one, clearly.

All good. We had a nice discussion today about dangers of internet dating , the new company party pooper policy - asking all co-workers to police their fellow co-workers' alcohol consumption at company functions, and the non-matchiness of my red and pink striped socks.

Appalling: www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/15/jon-stewart-takes-on-30-r_n_321985.htmlAlthough when Jeff Sessions tried to frame it as: "government shouldn't be allowed to dictate what private corporations put in their contracts" was such a dodge. The amendment didn't care what Halliburton put in their contract (well, I'm sure Franken and others did care] but the amendment simply wanted to instruct government to not do business with them. Appalling. I hope/assume that this vote will crop up in their re-election campaigns.

Atlantic Monthly has an article on "Brave Thinkers." I found this one interesting: www.theatlantic.com/doc/200911/brave-thinkers2/8My niece is selling magazine subscriptions for their chorus trip to FL. I'm seriously considering subscribing to Atlantic Monthly. I know I could read it online, but I rarely do. There are just so many places you can take a real magazine.
