Fringe Welcome to the Fringe Division
This is the place to discuss all the latest twists and turns and mysteries and "patterns" investigated by Olivia, Walter, and Peter. All aired episodes and previews are fair game. Spoilers, however, qualify as "classified." If we do see a spoiler here, we tell you, AND have to kill you.
Otherwise, discuss!

I thought Dr. Bishop had gone off with the bald guy? Now he magically shows up? I'm so confused!

The season opener is creeping me out. Seems to be a theme for me today. I thought Dr. Bishop had gone off with the bald guy? Now he magically shows up? I'm so confused! I'm confused, too, but only because I can't remember the exact order of what happened at the end of last season. Let me see... Walter went off with The Observer, who dropped him off at the Bishops' old beach house. Peter found Walter there, and they found the important artifact thingy to close the hole in space/time and keep the bad guy from crossing over to another universe. So that's how Walter got back into the storyline. This week was certainly fun; it reminded me of the X-Files, in a good way. I really appreciated not being shown the monster first thing - it had much more impact when it jumped out and grabbed Olivia, and even then we didn't see much of it. The denouement though - the police car fell on it and killed it? Seriously? Well, I'll give them one silly problem resolution, and the whole thing was, in retrospect, neatly set up with the car parked right next to a burrow and all, but don't try that every week, okay? It feels to me, and this is just my take, that Peter has taken up the role of older brother relative to Olivia. The "you aren't used to letting people help you" line was right on target - Olivia has always taken care of others, and she doesn't know how to ask for or accept help no matter how much she needs it. I also approve of the way she's recovering slowly and making mistakes - she nearly shot Peter - and he covered for her with Boyles. He really has stepped up and taken charge. Walter has certainly adopted Olivia as a daughter; the scene where he told her how he felt when he thought she'd died was very touching and nicely played by both of them. I could tell he was remembering his own loss, and again when they were talking about the doctor's dead baby boy - was it just me, or did Walter glance over in Peter's direction, just for a moment? That's another little plot point that I hope they address sometime this season. I just remembered, wasn't there talk early on about Peter needing special medications? And in this episode, Nina and bowling alley guy both hinted at nasty side effects from crossing between universes, and there have been hints dropped that Walter may have brought Peter over from another universe after his own Peter died (Not spoilers here, I don't know anything, just what I interpret from the show itself). I think Fringe is the one show this season that I'd be upset if I missed, at least until Chuck comes back, if it ever does. So much going on, so much to think about... More, more: I keep remembering things. Charlie Francis - shapeshifter has Charlie's memories as well as his form, yes? Either he's one heck of a mimic, or he's fighting the memories of Charlie's loyalty to his partner, because he seems a mite conflicted about the whole "Remove Olivia" thing. Should be interesting to see where that goes.

I might have more to offer as the day goes on and the coffee kicks in more fully, but just thought I'd comment on your last observation--I'm honestly not sure whether the shapeshifter gets the person's memories when they dupe the body. We haven't really seen Not!Charlie exhibit any information he couldn't have gleaned from going through Charlie's case files, and then there's the part where Charlie and Olivia work together in the parallel universe she was flashing on--Not!Charlie could know enough about that Charlie to fake being ours. I mean, you could also be completely right about memories being transferred. I just can't recall an instance where we've been shown one way or the other. I'm more certain about one thing--Not!Charlie wasn't feeling so hot, making me think that however the shapeshifting process occurs it's not meant to be maintained for any significant period of time. So I'm wondering if the person's original DNA is starting to try and reassert itself.

Didn't watch last year, but think I'll keep watching for now.
I second Anne's and Sara's observations about not feeling well and the possibility (unproven) that he might be conflicted about harming Olivia. I'm less clear on why they need her to remember vs just killing her.
And - - - - so Olivia is going to develop superpowers[/i]hearing? Not sure where that is going.

Should be interesting to see where that goes. Yeah, there was a real battle for dominance going on on Charlie's face in the scene in the car. John Savage was great in last night's episode; I've missed him since DA went away. He does "Trying to hide a secret and failing to hide the fact he's hiding something" so awfully well. The opening of the episode, though: that hit all of my big freak-out points, including being pulled under by an invisible force; that they played with us by showing the guy trying to get away, later, was right past the line for me. It wrecks my ability to watch. Julia, not much with the suspense and horror genre for that reason

The errant memories just surfaced* - Olivia had some of John Scott's memories for while, and couldn't tell them from her own. That's just by the way and may have nothing to do with Not!Charlie. On the other hand, if the shapeshifter doesn't have the memories, what's the point of the whole icky download cable thingy? Just for DNA doesn't seem like enough somehow. I mean, if you just wanted DNA, wouldn't you scratch or bite or otherwise ingest part of your victim? Sue: The super-hearing scene towards the end reminded me of "Earshot", only audio instead of thought. I was wondering if Olivia will be overwhelmed by noise at some point. Anne, cough cough sneeze back from the Bowers *Mine, not Olivia's, and having to do with comments I meant to post.

I almost forgot Fringe was on last night. Thank Goddess for DVRs with "all new episode" options.
It was good, but I have the feeling I missed a lot of small details. I'll have to go back and watch it again over the weekend.
I did like the way Astrid dealt with Walter's various oddities this week - "No more fruit, Walter".
"Why is there a watermelon in there?" "I'll tell you later." Heh.
Also, I liked the way she reassured Walter that doing something new, breaking routine, could be a good thing. Our four primary characters are quite a family, rather like Buffy and her Scoobies in their own way.
Olivia's back, and it looks like she's starting to remember her trip across the dimensions. Yay.

Wow. Roller-coaster time!
I was afraid, being a JJ Abrams veteran, that the Charlie scenerio would plug on for the whole season, or at least until the end of the front half- tonight's denoument was... nice, in a not-at-all-nice kind of way. And the scene with William Bell *shudder* had a great combination of visuals and meaning.
And Walter listens to Yes! I knew he'd be a prog-rock kind of boy.
Julia, am I the only one to get a Giles-Ethan vibe from William and Walter?

So Fringe is the love child between X-files and Terminator?
Definitely held my interest, though.
Like that Curtis from 24 has a role.
**I need to grind up some flatworms and drink them (but AFTER the strawberries are added) -- maybe it will improve my memory.

Random babbleage over last night's Fringe: Okay, I admit it. I squeeed when I saw Ravi Kapoor listed as a guest star. Bug! With a beard, yet! I miss Crossing Jordan. Poor Walter, so disturbed by the guy in restraints, and the smell of Seattle. At least this time he was able to explain his feelings to Peter, and get away from what bothered him. Also, when Walter mentioned MK-ULTRA, hilarity ensued, although I had to explain to Paul because he hasn't gotten to that part of The Men Who Stare at Goats yet. I said the book was Fringe for reals. Heh. I like bowling alley guy; I hope he's a recurring character. The running subplot of Olivia working through her guilt and grief over Charlie was very nicely done, I thought. It looks like the whole Peter-stolen-from-alternate-universe thing is about to hit the fan... In November? I have to wait? Argh. Grrr argh. I'm sure there was something else, but I forget. I do love this show.

But I did catch the snatching at the end, and poor Peter... Julia, also poor us, having to wait until after the Series.

I too felt bad for Walter when he was confronted with the guy in restraints, and my heart broke for Olivia when she figured out the anagram. And Walter's lip lick when he was describing the rush he'd felt while absorbing the dreams was quite... unnerving. Well played by John Noble.

Yes, I'm really impressed with John Noble, although they're all excellent. JN has made a caricature mad scientist into a fascinating, complex, layered human being. I give credit to the writers as well, but his acting is outstanding. I think we're going to watch this one again over the weekend, and probably the episode of the week before. There's so much going on, I know I'm missing important clues. By the way, Sara, please could you repost the link to that site that deciphers the symbols at the commercial breaks? I should've bookmarked it, but my brain is all swiss-cheesey.
