Here's the place to discuss SyFy's newest fraktastic series, Caprica. You may only discuss those episodes which have already aired. No spoilers are allowed! Those who post spoilers here will become target practice for Centurions-in-training, and I don't care how fast you think you are, there's no way you're coming out of that without a few extra holes.
Put your holographs on and let's get this discussion started!

So, I watched the movie/pilot yesterday, finally--I bought the dvd before Christmas but just never got around to watching it. I think I'm going to love this show. That was one of the best pilots of any show that I've ever seen. I found the daughter, Zoe, riveting. And of course Stoltz and Morales kicked all kinds of ass, as I had expected.
Fun fact that I just discovered: Alessandra Torresani, who plays Zoe, played George Michael's girlfriend, Ann, in her first appearance on Arrested Development. All other appearances of Ann were played by a different actress.
Anyways, after I had lamented a week or so ago about how I've lost interest in all tv except for SPN, this show comes along and is working hard at making me love it. Well done, showrunners. *slow clap*

The parents are both called Doctor, but Eric Stoltz appears to be a scientist type, whereas his wife appears to work in a hospital, correct? I just thought that was kind of interesting.

Well done, showrunners, indeed! I had only a slight idea of the premise and was completely gobsmacked by the end! Whoa! Interesting about the eye coloring disparity/distraction. You never know, it might be a clue or something.

Yeah, I chose to fanwave the whole daughter looks nothing like the parents thing. Either they'll address it later or she was so fantastic an actress that they couldn't turn her away. Or some other yet-to-be-revealed reason. . . . . . .

Also,
I'm not going back to find the original exchange but someone (Michelle?) asked whether Willie was Admr. Adama or his father.
I said it was Adama, but I believe I was wrong. The ep was set not 50, but 58 years before BSG and Willie is 11 years old. So, 69 for BSG, so I guess we assume he is Adama's father and Adama is only mid 40's? That's stretching it a big, I think.

Well, it makes more sense for it to be Commander Adama (a more direct tie to BSG) but somebody didn't do their math in that case. 69 years old seems unlikely. And should I know who the other family is? Was there a character on BSG who is descended from Eric Stoltz? Finally, is this the second time around for Cylons? (Sorry for my confusion and lack of background info.) When BSG did the reset what was the story? Had humans simply settled outer space over the centuries and was that the original attack by the cylons, as in the original BSG; or were they on Caprica because they had originally been driven from earth by a Cylon attack? Because....it would seem likely that there would be a prohibition against developing robotic warriors if there was a history ....

So, the infinity symbol used for the monotheists is an interesting choice. If you elongate and sharpen the end of the right arm and shorten, widen and sort of flatten out the left end (the right side would be longer than the left at this point) you would have the fish, symbolic of Christianity.

Of course, science always wins out because people have that old thirst for knowledge 'curse'. To answer your - which came first? question, I think what we are being led to believe is that 'all this has happened before and will happen again'.

Well, EJO is sixty-three right now, so it's not too far of a stretch. As far as I know, no, this is the first we've heard about the Greystone family. I'm not really sure what all you're asking, Caprica is set before the first Cylon attack. You see Dr. Greystone working on developing the Centurions, which were the first cylons, so they aren't even perfected and usable yet. But, he had Adama steal that piece of tech from the rival company, so that's helping him get the Centurions perfected and up and running, so to speak. I mean, I guess you can say that this is all a retread, given the whole "this has all happened before and will happen again" thing, and that humans are on Caprica because they fled from the cylons or whatever, but this is where my brain starts hurting because I can't think to deeply on this and be at work at the same time. But, as far as what was shown on BSG, what we're being show on Caprica happened 58 years before. And it is before the first cylon war. Here's the SyFy page that gives some history on BSG, and it can probably answer your questions a lot better than I can.

Interesting. I think that in our Earth (the one I think was founded by the settlers from BSG at the end of that show) the infinity sign may have been adopted by the Christian religion. Based on what I read this chicken definitely followed the egg. ;D

Based on what I read this chicken definitely followed the egg. ;D Good catch on the infinity symbol. Don't go googling explanation for infinity. It will boggle your mind. My understanding of the end of BSG was that they found Earth - and it had been destroyed, by I am assuming nuclear bombs. Or did I miss something? That the current BSG was set in the future - our far far in the future, after we blew up our planet. It is possible that the original band of survivors of Earth - the ones that went on to populate the Caprica/et al system, brought their religions with them, one of which was Christianity - and the fish symbol could have morphed into the infinity symbol....and so on....and so on...to infinity. ETA: I will read Jane's blog tonight and revise all previous assumptions. :DI think Caprica is going to rock!
