If Locke needed the six candidates to leave the island, why did he try to kill them?

Gail I think he wanted all the rest of the people who could be the new Jacob turned into squishy pudding.

You HAD to find out, Jack.
Too bad you don't know that Cooper was a murdering conman bastard.
This Jack does have a little bit to say about forgiveness of the self.
Not that he is good at it, apparently.
"Maybe you could go first" yeah, Locke, that made me laugh, too.
He believes you, Jack. he just doesn't want to be helped.
back to the island..
Poor Sawyer..
Oh, whew, things there are as they should be. Kate is fixated on Jack.
Oh, Hugo...
"they're all dead?"
"Not all of them"
nope, because smokey is still tied to the island.

SidewaysLocke was in a plane crash. Oh course! Of course!! He was the pilot and he crashed the plane. Oh that's just poetic. And freaksome.
Trust me. Believe me. Hitting all the buttons tonight.
So we're down to Jack and Sawyer and Hurley and Kate and Desmond and Claire and FLocke. And that's it?
Oh, poor Kate and Hurley and Jack and Sawyer! **huggles them all**

Gail I keep thinking that Jack's take on it was probably right - he needs them all dead but he can't kill candidates himself directly . . . Which doesn't completely make sense, but who cares!

Sayid and Jin and Sun. That's sad.
Who was it who said that Smokey needed the six candidates to leave the island?
I'm confused.
I still think there's some kind of connection between Smokey and baby Aaron.

Trying not to think about how little LOST we have left... Well, this was a precognitive statement if ever there was one. Haven't watched the episode yet, but from the comments I skimmed it looks like it was a doosy.

Sayid and Jin and Sun. That's sad.
Who was it who said that Smokey needed the six candidates to leave the island? Smokey said it, which means we can trust it about as far as we can throw the island.
Who was it who said that Smokey needed the six candidates to leave the island? Smokey said it, which means we can trust it about as far as we can throw the island.

He needs the six candidates - dead - to leave the island. Ah..that makes sense. I cried over Sun and Jin. Sayid was ultimately a hero, but he left Desmond in the well? Didn't kill him, tho. What did he say to Jack - that "it's you"? Free-flowing, work procrastinating thoughts: I do think Jack is the Candidate. Aaron and Sun and Jin's baby will most likely grow up to return to the island to find out what happened to their parents. (Claire will probably die, too, then.) The island's whole purpose is to keep Smokey contained ... and the Jacob character brings people to the island to what? Make sure that he has a candidate to take his place if Smokey gets the best of him? So - it's like Survivor. Whoever survives, wins the dubious prize of island caretaker. All the rest of the people are just used as pawns in the game. I wonder what happens if Smokey actually kills one of the Candidates himself. Does he die? So.....pushing the button at the beginning of the series was important why? Did we ever find this out? Oops...I wasn't going to start with the questions.

Teaser
Back in LA. Post surgery.
Jack and Locke.
Jack wants to know how Locke became paralyzed. Does...Locke not know?
Locke is a candidate...for an experimental procedure.
Jack wants to fix Locke. Locke turns him down.
Helen arrives.
Back on the island.
Jack's in the kayak. Oh, on the beach.
Sayid. They're on Hydra Station.
At least you didn't have to paddle. Sayid is starting to sound like his old self again.
Everybody's at the Hydra Station, now. Right?
Losties march 2 by 2. Back in the cages.
Widmore has Jacob's list.
Faced with the same choice that Ben had when the mercenaries pulled their guns on Alex. Sawyer backs down.
Widmore pulls the "for your own good" crap." DIE, DIE, DIE!!!!
Hey, Kate can just slip out of that cage, right? She did it before.

Part I
Back in LA.
Bernard the dentist.
Bernard did emergency oral surgery on Locke. 3 years ago. When the accident took place, I presume.
Anthony Cooper involved in Locke's accident.
So Anthony Cooper is not Locke's father in this reality? Or he is and Locke just doesn't know it? The father he was referring to is his adopted father?
Good luck, Doc. I hope you find what you're looking for.
Back on the island.
Sayid and Jack.
The Others were either killed or scattered into the jungle. I still don't understand what makes them so shiftless.
Just Sayid, Jack, and NotLocke left.
NotLocke returns. They're planning on rescuing the Losties.
I would ask him, but somehow I don't think that he's going to give me a straight answer. I don't imagine that his intentions are good. Pot. Kettle, NotLocke.
Jack's not leaving.
Locke wants Jack's help convincing the Losties to trust him...because he could kill them all and he hasn't. He's trying the "help" them. Um, that doesn't really inspire trust. I'm not sure if NotLocke understands what that means.
In The Cages.
Kate and Sawyer.
Running in circles. Kate knows running in circles.
Sawyer tells Kate about how her name was crossed out.
Jin and Sawyer. Why are they talking in English and not Korean?
Sun gives Jin's ring back to him.
Aww...
Cutting the power. Smoke Monster attacks.
Frank tries the hulk smash method.
So Jack did ally himself with the Smoke Monster. Jack, Jack, Jack. You were doing so well.

Part II
The Losties, together again.
So they're taking the plane now instead of the sub.
Sayid.
Ah, Sayid was the one who turned off the generator.
And they're cool with NotLocke now?
Back in LA.
Jack still investigating Locke's accident.
Helen. Locke doesn't want the operation. Cause he's flashed and he knows about the original reality?
Ah, Anthony Cooper was also paralyzed. Ah, he's a vegetable. Still Locke's father in this reality.
Back on the island.
Widmore's goons guarding the plane. NotLocke dispenses them in short order.
Goodbye goons, you were too stupid to live.
And he...takes one of their watches? Huh?
Locke's going to destroy the plane?
Oh, no. Richard et al have already done their work.
The Losties arrive.
C4, so not Richard's work. Or, no. The Barracks had C4, right?
Where is Richard et al anyway?
That's twice you've saved our asses; I guess I was wrong about you. (No, Sawyer, you've just been drinking the koolaid!)
They're off to try the submarine.
Ah, good. Sawyer A Plan.

Part III
Back in LA.
I wish you had believed me. So Locke's flashing.
Claire and Jack.
Jack grabs an Apollo Bar.
"the other day." So this is some time later.
Claire never met Christian in this reality.
Music box. And it plays Catch a Falling Star, right?
Christian died of alcohol poisoning, just as he did in the original reality, right?
Yep, Catch a Falling Star. And mirror on the inside.
Aww...Jack invites Claire to stay with her.
Back on the island.
Operation Storm The Sub.
Nothing personal. (Heh.)
Whoever told you you needed to stay had no idea what they were talking about. John Locke told me to stay. (Boo yah!!!)
Kate! DAMN!!!
Wow, Claire's a good shot.
NotLocke resurfaces like one of those sea monsters.
Now, why is NotLocke shooting instead of turning into the Smoke Monster?
OMG, and then they leave without Claire.
Trust me, you don't want to be on that sub. What does NotLocke know?
OMG, the first aid kit is also C4. And they did exactly what NotLocke wanted. Just what I've been saying!
