So why are they speaking Latin?
and the magical shift to English for the viewer She's from a shipwreck?
And the island resident is Smokey, isn't she?
Jacob? Iacobius?
And it's twins, and the second will be Esau. And thus be Smokey. The brains-dashing is a bit unexpected.. though now I don't think she's Smokey.

Well, now we've presumably seen Smokey's crazy 'mother' - she killed his real mom . Why? Did the Island tell her to, or did she just have a compulsion to mother the twins by herself?
Interesting.

Oooooooooh, are we gonna go way back, back to the start of Jacob and Smokey and the builders of the four footed statue perhaps? 'Cuz her outfit and hair and foot-wear look a bit old-timey to me! HA! Yes, that's the birth of Jacob. Aha! And there's another baby. Smokey, I'm betting, yes? And killer-woman is the "crazy" mom to be, yes? The first instance of going nuts on the island.

So the blond boy that Smokey's been seeing is Jacob!
And Little Smokey already likes black.

Gail Crazy mom is my bet too. ;D I wonder if this is an early example of what would happen to Rousseau and Crazy!Cave!Claire.

Jacob and Esau playing games.. how far back is this, then?
Others.
"I've made it so that you can never hurt each other"
Well, that explains a lot.
"what is this place?" good question.
When you see a glowing gold cave, your mom tells you "don't go in there" and what the hell are you gonna do?
"We must make sure that no-one ever finds it"
"Can't protect it forever"
"then who will?"

Young Jacob looks like a year or two older than Young Smokey - but Young Smokey is a very good-looking kid....

Magical game-playing spirits invading the to-become-smokey kid. Penelope Crazy!faux!mom at the loom . . . "Jacob doesn't know how to lie. He's not like you." "You're special." Where else would the game come from? Yeah, the island is not "all there is", dude, and he knows that. But he'll never have to worry about "dead", so there's that. Oooooh! Others on the Island, even back then! Proto-Others! Already with the "we're here for a reason" thing. Same thing that's wrong with men, with people - they fight, destroy, corrupt. And she "made it" so the two of them can never hurt each other. Oooooh! The reason! The reason they're here! Magical glowy fairyland Light. That's in everyone. And they want more. And if it's taken, then the light goes out everywhere. And she protects it and one of them inherits the task. Well, you can't say this ep isn't giving you answers, eh? It's exposition central, dude!

G. It all stems from his baby-blanket issues.

Hey, look, it's their momma!
across the island. ah yes, a bunch of italian yurts.
Smokey wants to leave, but momma's bound them to the island. bound them to each other.
And he's gone.
Wonder what he's gonna find in Little Roma there.

"One day you can make up your own game and everyone else will have to follow your rules." You said it, dude. You said it. Kid!Smokey sees dead people! Or sees original smoke monster, perhaps. That is gonna recruit him. And sees the Proto-Losties. Ooooh, and learns about crazy-head-bashing-not-your-real-mom. Dysfunctional family dynamics! Violence and lies! A rift between the people on hte island! The start of it all! Or is it even the start? After all, how did she get there and what is her origin story, eh? "You'll never be able to leave." And baby!smokey says his version of "don't tell me what to do". Hmmmmm. Justifying her killing of their mom. So they'd "stay good". Oy! "I love you in different ways." Hmmmm. Ben Linus would be familiar with that concept, wouldn't he?

Jacob and Smokey still getting in their game of whatever the hell it is.
magnetic well!!
yep, Roman-style knife.
no! not suggesting that crazy-brain-dashy-momma might not live forever!
And what is crazymom off to do, now?
Ah. Climb down a ladder into.. what?
what's in the brazier?
He couldn't find the lighted waterfall?
"Very interesting ideas about what to do with it" Whatever the hell it is.
oh, look it's the donkey wheel!
It's that crap that they lined briefcases with in pulp fiction.
And so it is, it's the donkey wheel. part of Smokey's rube goldberg device to liberate himself from the island. instead it wound up being an island location randomizer. Whups?
"I a so sorry"
There's that brain-dashing again. It was more expected this time.
