Magical game-playing spirits invading the to-become-smokey kid. Penelope Crazy!faux!mom at the loom . . . "Jacob doesn't know how to lie. He's not like you." "You're special." Where else would the game come from? Yeah, the island is not "all there is", dude, and he knows that. But he'll never have to worry about "dead", so there's that. Oooooh! Others on the Island, even back then! Proto-Others! Already with the "we're here for a reason" thing. Same thing that's wrong with men, with people - they fight, destroy, corrupt. And she "made it" so the two of them can never hurt each other. Oooooh! The reason! The reason they're here! Magical glowy fairyland Light. That's in everyone. And they want more. And if it's taken, then the light goes out everywhere. And she protects it and one of them inherits the task. Well, you can't say this ep isn't giving you answers, eh? It's exposition central, dude!Oh yeah. Way cool.

So who, or what, is generating the ghosts? I'd thought it was Smokey; but he's seen his dead mother. Is it the Island? Did he take over an ability to generate fake ghosts?
And why is Smokey not allowed to leave? And what is his name, other than Smokey?
I wish they'd clear up more of it. Though I'm enjoying this episode.

So, she was the first "Jacob" and stole the boys so that she's be able to go, to die, yes? Smokey hates the people he came to live with, but they're a "means to an end". Familiar much? Oooh! Magnets! The real point we're getting here is that the more things stay the same, the more things stay the same, yes? What did they find when they dug, eh? Did they find the donkey wheel? Or did they build the donkey wheel? Or . . . ? Looking for the light. And a fine example of the biggest problem on the island - not telling people things! "I have no idea because you wouldn't tell me!" Yes! They built the donkey wheel! How does he know? He's special! Watch out, dude! She'll hit you with a rock! Or, you know, a wall! And does this make his Smokey-ness manifest? Because he's dead?

Jacob and Smokey still getting in their game of whatever the hell it is. magnetic well!! yep, Roman-style knife. no! not suggesting that crazy-brain-dashy-momma might not live forever! And what is crazymom off to do, now? Ah. Climb down a ladder into.. what? what's in the brazier? He couldn't find the lighted waterfall? "Very interesting ideas about what to do with it" Whatever the hell it is. oh, look it's the donkey wheel! It's that crap that they lined briefcases with in pulp fiction. And so it is, it's the donkey wheel. part of Smokey's rube goldberg device to liberate himself from the island. instead it wound up being an island location randomizer. Whups? "I a so sorry" There's that brain-dashing again. It was more expected this time. The brain-dashing is starting to get rather matter of fact now, isn't it? "Oh, look. She dashed his brains out. Ho-hum."

It's the healing waters of the pool, isn't it?
and it's that bottle of wine again. Oh, c'mon, they've been SPEAKING Latin all this time, why have her chant in it now?
Christian imagery in her words.
Wow, maybe evil stepmom IS smokey. that's a hell of a lot of rampage killing and destruction there. Well broken, people killed...

What's down there? It's Life! It's Death! Rebirth! The heart of the island! It's a floor wax! It's a dessert topping! (Just don't go down there, dude!) Drink this and accept the responsibility of protecting this place. And Jacob didn't want to be the candidate back then either. So did he get all sorts of mystical knowledge when he drank? And did he or she kill all the shipwrecked folks and burn their village? Poor sad little smoke-monster to be! And now he angry! Grrr!

"Why do you love him more than me?" What makes him say that? So, Jacob stays with his adopted mother and Smokey goes to the other side of the island to be with People. Annnnd we are all grown up. Playing the same game. His People are 'bad'. But he wants off the island so he thinks they're a means to a way off the island. Magnetic stone. Metal behaves strangely all over the island. So do mothers, apparently.

"Why do you love him more than me?" What makes him say that? Maybe the classic "I was always so good and he was a rascal and that made him more interesting and I wish I'd been able to do that" kind of feelings? Just like now, eh? Ha!

really, Stepmom, you should have expected this.
And Jacob finds him over their stepmom's body.
And beats the stupid out of him.
"She killed them all"
He's gonna throw him into golden light and make him INTO Smokey.
ahyup.
no, there his body is.. And those are the two bodies from the cave that we saw in the first season.
And a flash-forward for the thick ones amongst us.
AND WE STILL DON'T GET HIS GODDAMN NAME!!!
NICE music usage!!! ("The End")

Curiouser and Curiouser.
But I thought Mama said that Smokey couldn't be killed.
So is Ageless Smokey Jacob's brother or an angry Island spirit?
Confused much.

Whoopsie! Mommy go bye bye! And she's glad to be able to die, yes? Because she's been stuck there for a long time, eh?
Another brother smack-down, but now there's no mom to stop it. Ooooooh, is Jacob gonna toss him into the light-water? So that's how he becomes smoke-monster?
Yes! We see the birth of the smoke-monster! And it's Jacob's fault! Whoa! Die and go in the water, come out smokey. Like Ben. And Sayid.
Huh. So crazy-mom and Smokey were the Adam and Eve bodies!!

You mean the whole "Take the cup and drink."? Oh yeah. Smokey isn't dead and a monster is made out the ashes of destruction. Goodbye mommy dearest. And she thanks him for killing her. Ah...he's going to shove him in the light, which then makes him into a true monster of the island. The island isn't very happy ... or did he release something that was trapped in the cave? Whatever it was spit his brother back out. Ah...the two bodies in the cave from Season 1. Kate and Jack flashblack of when they found the skeletons.

Curiouser and Curiouser.
But I thought Mama said that Smokey couldn't be killed. Maybe couldn't be killed by Jacob or naturally, but could be killed by the magical Light water stuff? Or maybe she lied and it was only after Jacob drank the whatever she gave him that he couldn't be killed? Or only couldn't be killed by Jacob? Or . . . ?
