Much done, a bit left to do. I recently bought a pair of pale blue sheets even though my memory of Anna S' description of them "as if he hadn't been paying attention" stuck in my mind: they were 65% off, darn it! Today I dyed them sapphire. Heather and I made great progress against the forces of disorder and entropy.
Julia, so yay, right?

Now they're being asked to go back to the 70's? Didn't we already see that go horribly wrong last week? And now Anya's lost her money. OY!!

Ah, all the behind-the-back snarking on this show. "Sex on the bottom and a bare midriff." Oh, Tim! You so saucy!

Ah! Brings back sweet memories of this incident on our campus: For 15 years, Patrick Washburn has displayed a Reconstruction-era rifle on the wall of his office at Ohio University (OU). The firearm, a family heirloom passed down from his great-grandfather, seemed to be an appropriate antique for Mr. Washburn to hang there: Mr. Washburn is a journalism professor specializing in the history of wartime press.
But now, he's the one doing battle with Ohio University administrators . . . they dispatched campus police to Mr. Washburn's office and ordered him to remove the 1878 Springfield rifle . . . moreIt caused quite a ruckus, without even the saving grace of getting to see pretty Nathan Fillion pictures. I actually love this part of being on a campus - I mean, the drama! After nearly 25 years working in many capacities on this campus, and getting to know people from every part of the University, one of my very favorite all time quotes is from Henry Kissinger: "University politics are vicious precisely because the stakes are so small." So what eventually happened? I do wonder about these things, although I have to assume that OU doesn't have an ROTC policy, nor a gun room in every dorm so that students can bring their hunting rifles with them (UM Missoula). It's weird the numinous force guns bring to any argument, and how bigger guns do not always shut people up: I once hosted a party where one of the guests decided to go ON about the necessity of the second amendment in empowering prople against an overwheening government. Just then the Fort decided it was time for a two-minute All Guns mortar and howitzer barrage and yet he persisted. Julia, guns are so magical that mere mention can make campus police pee themselves? Sorry, didn't mean to leave it hanging, but I don't really remember how the gun part all resolved itself. I think he got that back, but he had other problems with complaints which were related to why people claimed to be uncomfortable with the gun. I don't remember how it all ended, but I think he's still a prof here.

Girls decided to argue over bedtime - "I can't sleep, she won't turn out the light!!" "It's not fair that I have to turn out the light, I'm not tired yet!!" Etc. So they are going back to the 70's? Hmmmm.

Runway!
Kimberly: First outfit - I actually like the colors in her print and the idea of the first outfit. But not sure if the cut is exactly right on the top ... Now the jumper on the other hand I really like the look of. Will they have issues with the sloppy last-minute sewing, though?
Anthony Ryan - Hmmm. Do I love it? Do I hate it? I can't decide on his first outfit. I think I would really love the little vest/dress/skirt thing-ness of it, but the prints seem just slightly wrongly off. And I can't even explain why. Now the maxi is sort of the opposite. I actually really like this print but the cut of the dress is not my fave, although I do like the low back. Also? Nice belts on both!
Bert - First outfit does seem too literal-disco, to me (much as I hate to agree with Laura). On the other hand, sheer fabrics and metalics are actually kind of "now" again, so maybe he'll fare better than I'm thinking. Second dress is nice, but is it too dull? Seems a bit dull to me. Oh! I like the back. Now I'm gonna revise what I said. Second dress actually does look, as he says about everything he makes, "fresh and young".
Laura: Well, I actually like each of her prints. But not together. And I wouldn't have used the green print in the way she did, the flowy long pant-skirt look muddies the print too much. I do like her second look - and she's got that sheer fabric thing that is also so current right now.
Joshua - Well, I actually really like the pants; very sexy and almost a combo 80's-70's but updated look. The top is not as successful to me. The color blocking is just too blunt/unsophisticated looking. Second look is pretty, and I like the little touches he did with the straps and wrap-belt stuff. Print is pretty and (unlike Laura's) the flowiness doesn't detract. But the whole thing seems a bit ... overdone?
Anya - much nicer than I expected! I agree with Bert's "not bad for $18" comment, but also with the complaints Anya makes about it herself - pants are too short, making the shape not quite right. But I like the color of her top better than she did. Second look is a pretty print, bit too flowy, nice use of sheers, blah blah blah. You know, after seeing a whole bunch of them come down the runway one after another? I'm starting to get a bit bored of the flowy-equals-70's thing.
Viktor - OMG, such a breath of fresh air to see a lovely gorgeous pantsuit! That fits well! And isn't relying on just a crazy-ass print or flowy flow!! Very nice indeed. And I can actually see a 70's reference but it's not old-looking. It's a Festivus miracle! And the second look? Nice! Pretty, more modern looking but yes, you can see the 70's shape/cut. Well done, Viktor!
Now to post before the I listen to the judges contradict everything I think. ;D

Judging!! Laura - They don't like the two prints together (yeah). But the other look is OK, if a bit dull. "The maxi skirt you can find anywhere." Oh, snap.
Viktor - Two great looks. Except they don't think it's "sexy" enough, too "conservative". They love the T-shirt! Oooh, and they've used the "looks expensive" comment. Do we have another win for him I wonder?
Joshua - Ha! It's too "over the top" and ugly and OMG, dude, just shut up! "You have ideas that need to be confined." Oh, damn, I LOVE this guest judge!! She is just ON TARGET!
Anya - They love the print of the second look, love the sheer fabric. Are amazed at the $11.00 outfit.
Anthony - Looks like a tent. Very hippy-dippy but not in a good way. (Snicker! Love this, Nina!) Two boring girls. That are part of a cult. Oh, SNAP!
Bert - They like the simple second dress, very simple but love the different color back. They like the shear fabric of the first look, are torn a bit on the shorts. But they all really like the simple dress.
Oh, shut up, Joshua!! And harshly-aggressively saying that Viktor is "getting agressive"? OMG, you are such a jerk, Joshua!!
Winner is ... ANYA? WTF?? Oh, that's right. It's a Piperlime "sell this online" challenge. Meaning her clothes that are just big swaths of fabric will be cheap to produce. OH, and Bert's simple dress gets in too!! That is perfect! (Well, Viktor's were awesome but would be too expensive to make, wouldn't give them sufficient profit margin.)
Auf'd is ... Anthony Ryan. Well, I did say that I might hate his outfits, so they were definitely polarizing.
Well, that was an exciting show!

Please send some of these photos to National Geographic. You're as good as any photographer they've ever featured. These are wonderful. You've captured the uniqueness and beauty of each creature to perfection. Thank you!

A friend of Vince's, who is a published cartoonist, has a book coming out of his cartoons, and he sent me a note that Vince is featured in one of them!
He draws his cartoons from his real life, and his drawings are stylized cartoon versions of how the person actually looks.
Anyhow, he sent me a brief note telling me how much he missed Vincent, and about how Vince's appearance in the book (a 400 page collection of his comics) is "based on a dream I had about him."
I am going to be getting a copy in December, and I cannot WAIT to see it!
ALSO:
My elder foster daughter is very good with pottery. She takes a class in it at the HS, and her teacher told me she was her "best student." And she does bring home some great pieces. Anyhow, she saw the last piece Vince made - unfinished (not painted/glazed, just white, unfinished surface only, a little cup). He had not had time to finish it; it was one of the last things he ever did.
So she surprised me by saying, "I'll take this to school and finish it for him."
This made me cry, but in a good way. I cannot WAIT to see it, either!
So two Vince-related things to look forward to - this kind of thing helps me a lot.

Your foster daughters sound like great kids, by the way, and they're lucky to have you there for them. We keep finding odd things my dad must have bought and stashed as future gifts, and my mother is convinced he's watching over her. She just had to have the whole house rewired, and she keeps saying he would have loved meeting the electricians. From what she's said about them, he would've been helping them out, getting underfoot, and loving it. They told her he'd done a good job himself with the mods he did to the wiring, which was a nice thing to hear.

What a wonderful gift--to have your foster daughter finish Vince's last piece. And then the story of how the book is coming to you by someone who obviously loved him too. How loving and how well-deserved. You are truly awesome in the old-fashioned sense of the word. You do fill me with awe. It is a privilege to know you. Furthermore, you have inspired me. The organization Ian helped found, The Montrose Beer and Gun Club, holds a chili cook-off and charity auction (which he also helped start and in which he actively participated right up till he died) every year for Make a Wish. I have a pile of car designs Ian made in college. I will offer them to the charity today.
